Description

W. B. GRHAM. Hand-Stamps.

Patented August 26, 873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. GOBHAM, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-STAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,099, dated August 26,1873 application iiled October 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM: B. GORI-IAM, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Hand-Stamps, of which thei'ollowing is a specification:
Figure I of the accompanying drawing is a central vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical transverse section, of my improved hand-stamp.
rlhe present invention relates to the class of hand-stamps generally known as ribbonstamps, and has for its object to improve their construction iu such a manner as to admit of the use of differently-colored ribbons on the same stamp. To this end the inventionconsists in the construction and arrangement of parts which I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawings, c represents the bedor base of a hand-stamp, extending upward from the rear of which is a curved standard or trame, b, projecting forward, and formed on the face of its upper portion with horizontal projecting bearings c c', that support and allow the free up-and-down play of a stem or plunger, d, provided with a spiral or other suitable spring, c, that nds a seat on the top of the lower bearing c', and bears at the top against a stem connected with the plunger d, the bottom of which is connected with and held by a screw, t', to a pad or platen, f, that is brought down upon a ribbon saturated with ink, and extending over the top of an adjustable die or types contained in an adjustable pallet, g, by the power applied to a cap, h, connected with the top of the plunger d, the pad or platen f being raised to its original position, when the power is removed from the cap h, by the release of the spring c, which is compressed by the downward action of the plunger el. The bed or base a is raised ,in the center to form a bed, w, and is formed on each side with vertical anges or ways, 7s 7c', to support and allow of the ready insertion or withdrawal of a die or pallet, g, which is formed on the bottom with a screw-stem, l, that tits into an aperture, m, extending through the base a, and formed with shoulders m', against which abuts the head of a screw, p, that engages with the screw-stem Z, and holds the pallet g firmly in place. In the front and rear of the ways k k', extending partly across the bed a, are ribbon-boxes r r', provided with an ink-ribbon connected with and operated by arbors s s, having springs t and thumb-wheels u, and attached to or formed on blocks c e', that are held on or removed from the bed a by screws w w', operating in apertures countersunk so as to form shoulders z z', and extending through the bottom of the bed c.
By the above description, reference being had tothe drawings, it will readily be seen that, as the ribbon-boxes are removable, one set of boxes may be exchanged for another, and thus differently-colored ribbons may be used on the same stamp.
Having thus fully described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent,
The combination of the base c, adjustable block c or c, and ribbon-box 1 or 9", arranged as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM B. GORHAM.
