PLIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 27, 1922.
Application filed .Tune 15, 1921. Serial No. 477,671.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known'that I, FRED. T. FonHL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pliers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention aims to provide certain new and useful improvements in pliers, and more particularly such pliers as are intended for use by opticians and oculists.-
It is a well appreciated fact that any number of pliers have been constructed which were to be utilized in associating a clamping plate with the rims of an eyeglass. For the most part these pliers have offered objections in that primarily they were cumbersome in construction, and relatively expensive in manufacture, and furthermore the rims have become crushed if the pliers were not handled with extreme care.
Aside from the difficulties mentioned pliers of this nature have heretofore marred the exterior of the clamping plates while bending the latter so that the bright surface of these plates has been scratched and rendered unsightly, it being also noted in this connection that it is customary to utilize different sizes of pliers corresponding to the size of the rim with which they were to cooperate.
With these defects in mind, my present invention aims to provide a plier which shall. be extremely simple in construction and capable of being manufactured at a nominal figure, and by means of which the Optician or oculist may readily associate the plate of an eye-glass with the rim, without any danger of the latter becoming crushed incident to careless handling of the pliers.
A further object of my invention is the construction of a device of the character stated which will not mar the surface of the clamping plate and which shall be constructed in such a manner as to be capable of being utilized in connection with widely varying sizes of eye-glass rim.
Still further objects of my invention will appear in the annexed specification taken in connection with the drawings which latter illustrate one practical embodiment of the same, and in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my pliers in use.
Figure 2 is a side View thereof.
Figure 3 is a front view of the same, and
Figure & illustrates one of the jaws.
Referring now more particularly to F igure 1 it will be seen that the pliers include in the usual manner, a pair of farms 5 pivotally secured as at 6 and presentin a pair of jaws 7 which will be moved toget er upon the arms 5 comprising the handles being moved towards each other as in the usual type of pliers.
Attention is invited to Figure 2, and it will be seen in this figure that both of the jaws are curved in the same direction for a purpose hereinafter specified, and reference being had to Figure 4, it will be noted that each of the jaws presents a groove 8 extending transversely across the inner face of the same, a further groove 9 being also provided, which groove has one of its ends in communication with the groove 8 at a point subsequently intermediate the extremities thereof, the opposite ends of this latter groove extending to the outer end of each of the jaws.
Further it will be seen that a set screw 10 is associated with one of the jaws, and hasits inner end contacting with the inner face of the second of the same. Thus the jaws may be prevented from contacting with Each other, for a purpose hereinafter speci- It will be seen that by virtue of the curvature of the jaws 7 that the same may be introduced within the frame of the eye-glass, as has been shown in Figure 1, and the outer ends of these jaws presenting the grooves 8 and 9 will lie in a plane forming a continuation of the plate 11 to be bent, and it will be appreciated that by this construction any part of the frame 12 will be equally capable of being operated upon by this type of plier, it being also noted in this connection that the groove 9 will bridge the nose-piece or any other element extending from the plate to be clamped.
Furthermore the arcuate interior of the groove 8 conforms to the curvature of the frame 12,. and it will be understood that the plate 11 will be properly applied to the frame and not in the slightest distorted thus avoiding any marring of the face of the same, it being also noted that the set screw 10 may be adjusted to limit the movement of the jaws 7 towards each other, thus preventing any crushing of the frame 12 to the-diameter of which it is adjusted.
Thus it will be seen that all of the objects set forth in the preamble of this specification have been accomplished, and it will be understood that numerous modifications of 5 structure might readily be resorted to without in the least departing from the spirit ofmy invention, which I claim as;
A plier including a pair of jaws having their inner faces similarly curved throughout their entire length and extending normally parallel to each other, each of said jaws being formed with grooves adjacent its outer end.
