Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed'August l, 1921. Serial No. 488,843.
e resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new -and Improved Forming Die, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a forming die for fianging the ends of pipes and more especially to the parts of a plungeror follower'of the male member which cooperates withthe female member of a die for progressively carrying out a seriesof steps or treatment of the end of an iron, steel or means whereby two forming faces of the? male member of the die can be successively and quickly presented to the end of thezpipe desired =to'be flanged "and the steps-can be continuously and expeditiously carried out on :pipeends-ofalarge aswell as small diameter -and without injury to said forming faces or effecting the efficient operation of the die-or thehigh-quality of work produced.
Theinventionconsists of structural characteristics and relative arrangements of elements which will be hereinafter. more fully described and particularly pointed out in theappended claims.

'lhe opposite sides of the two halvesor sections 10, 11 are provided with perforated lugs 15 andl6 adapted to be engaged by a removable pin 17 for the purpose of securely holding said sections 10, 11, about the end ofia pipe, as shown in Figure 8, and at the same time permitting the pipe end to be readily removed after the fianging operation, to be presently described, are completed.
The inner portions of the sections l0 and 11 are so formed, constructed and arranged that when locked-together or in their closed position, as indicated, they form an axial cylindrical hole '18 having a bore of substantiallythe same diameter as the outside diameter of the pipe which is to be flanged,
while in the upper ends of the sections 10 and ll-intheirclosed position is formed a cylindrical recess 19 of a diameter equal to'the diameter of the =flange to be produced for reasons which will be more clearly understood -from the disclosure of the cooperating parts to be presently given. Theforegoing type of female member of a die with :the bore or "hole 18 combined with a recess '19 is common and well known and I make no broad claim for this form of construction.
20 is themale'member ofthe die, follower or plunger which may be mounted and operated or reciprocated by any-suitablemechanism with respect to the stationary die'sections 10 and 11, as is common in horizontal or other forms of hydraulicpresses or similar classes of machines and needs no further showing or disclosure. Said follower or plunger-2O is provided with two rigid and firm cylindrical extensions 21 and 22 arranged with their axes infalignment, and extension 21 is of such "a depthand diameter asto fit within the recess 19 in the female sections 10 and 11 of the die, while the smaller section 22 isof a diameter equal to the inside diameter of the pipeto be flanged as illustrated in Figure 4c.
23 is a removable and rotatable swivel ring preferably frusto-conical in shape and is so proportioned and constructed as to be provided with an axial and cylindrical hole 24 of a slightly larger diameter than the diameter of the extension 22 so as to permit said swivel ring 28 to be removable and capable of rotary motion about and independent of the extension 22 if necessitated during the Patented June 27, 1922.
pipe flanging operations. The base and the height of the ring 23 are slightly smaller than the diameter and depth of the recess 19, as will be clearly understood by reference to Figure 4.
The parts being constructed and arranged as shown, the manner of using the invention is as follows:
The sections 10 and 11 of the female member having been opened up and the end of the pipe P having been preferably and previously heated to a bright red heat is inserted in said female member, so that the end F of the pipe P, assumes the position shown in Figure 3. The sections 10 and 11 of the female member are then looked together in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The male member with its section 21 and exten sion 22 and the removable swivel ring 23 applied and adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 4 is then moved by any suitable and. sufficient pressure to cause the extension 22 to first enter into the end F of the pipe end and upon further movement into the female member until the forward or outer reduced portion of the swivel ring 23 engages the inner edge of the open pipe end, and on continued progress of said extension 22 into the pipe end, the swivel ring 23 will cause the end F of the pipe to expand and flare outwardly and when the outer or reduced portion of the ring 23 engages or abuts against the inner edge or circular por tion of smallest diameter of the flaring end of the pipe, as shown in Figure 4, the male portion with its sections 21 and 22 and ring 23 are removed from the female section of the die and after the end of the extension 22 sufficiently clears the female member sections 10 and 11, the swivel ring 23 is moved along and slipped from the extension 22 by any suitable means and put aside for operating on the next pipe section. After the ring 23 has been removed. as just explained, the male member of the die is again introduced into the previously flared. pipe end F and forced into the female member and inner straight section of the pipe until the section 21, and extension 22 assume the positions shown in Fig. 5, when the flanging of the pipe is completed.
The male member of die is then removed from the flanged end of the pipe when the female member of the die is opened up and the flanged pipe removed when the forming die is ready for a repetition of the steps just described.
If it is found that the pipe end during the flanging is not pliable and readily responsive to the male member of the die, the end of the pipe may be reheated if found necessary as is common in this class of operations.
It will be seen that the separate and independent ring 23 acts as a swivel which helps the parts of the pipe end and forming die to remain in axial alignment while the flanging operations are being carried out.
From the foregoing disclosure of the construction and arrangement of the improvement and mode of applying the same, it will be seen that all the objects and ad vantages recited in the statement of invention have been fully and efliciently carried out, and while I have shown and described my preferred form of the forming die, many changes will readily suggest themselves without in any way departing from the salient features herein disclosed and embodied in the scope of the claims.
What I claim is 1. A forming die for flanging the end of a pipe comprising a female die member having a central bore adapted to engagethe body portion of the pipe, and a cylindrical recess at the extremity of the bore of larger diameter than said bore and adapted to receive the end of the pipe, a male die member adapted to enter said female die member consisting of a plunger or follower formed with a large cylindrical section and a small end cylindrical extension so constructed and arranged as to permit said small end cylindrical extension to pass through said recess and into the central bore of the female die member and open end of the pipe within the female die member and the large cylindrical section adapted to pass into and be seated in said cylindrical recess, and a removable swivel ring loosely surrounding said small end cylindrical extension and abutting against the adjacent end portion of the large cylindrical section.
2. A forming die for flanging the end of a pipe comprising a female die member having a central bore adapted to engage the body portion of the pipe and a cylindrical recess at the extremity of the bore of larger diameter than said bore and adapted to receive the end of the pipe, a male die member adapted to enter said female die member consisting of a plunger or follower formed with a large cylindrical section and a small end cylindrical extension so constructed and arranged as to permit said small end cylindrical extension to pass through said recess and into the central bore of the female die member and open end of the pipe within the female die member and the large cylindrical section adapted to pass into and be seated in said cylindrical recess, and an independent removable swivel ring frusto-conical in shape and loosely surrounding said small end cylindrical extension and abutting against the adjacent end portion of the large cylindrical section.
3. A forming die for flanging the end of a pipe comprising a female die member having a central bore adapted to engage the body portion of the pipe and a cylindrical recess at the extremity of the bore of larger diameter than said bore and adapted to receive the end of the pipe, a male die member adapted to enter said female die member consisting of a plunger or follower formed with a large cylindrical section and a small end cylindrical extension so constructed and arranged as to permit said small end cylindrical extension to pass through said recess and into the central bore of the female die member and open end of the pipe Within the female die member and the large cylindrical section adapted to pass into and be seated in said cylindrical recess, and a separate and independent removable swivel ring frusto-conical in shape and loosely surrounding said small end cylindrical extension and having its base abutting against the adjacent end portion of the large cylindrical section.
