Description
T. NASH. DISK SHARPENIR. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 14 I921- 1,420,568. I Patented June '20, 1922.
Emma T/zonzas Al /6 U ,sTA-TE "riioiuas -lmsrrg or i z aiirmoors,
T0 altwfiom may concern: 1
Be it known that I, THoMAs NASH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the town of Kamloops, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improve V 'ments in Disk Sharpeners, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in disk Sharpeners, with particular reference to a device for sharpening the disks of disk harrows, and the object of my invention is to provide a sharpener adapted to be attached to the harrowframe and against which the disk may be rotated to be sharpened, and which is strong, simple, and highly practical.
I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side view" of my device.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is a front end view.
Fig. 4 is a view illustrating the practical application of the invention.
Similar figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several. views.
The device is formed preferably as shpwn in Figs. 1 and 2, and consists of a hard steel plate 1 terminating at one end in a clamp 2 Q by means of which it may be clamped to the cleaner bar 3 of. the harrow, a bolt 4 and a thumb nut 5 being provided for the purpose of tightening the clamp when the device is assembled in place. The plate 1 1s twisted as at 6 and inclined with relation A .to the clamp portion, the angle of inclination and amount of twist being that required to position the plate in proper disk grinding position, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. Se-' cured by one end to the plate 1 on its underside is a plate 7 of spring steel, provided on its underside with a box 12 having its opposite sides 13 and 14 inclined inwardly and its forward end and the bottom open adapted to detachably receive an emery stone 15 of the same shape as the box, butof greater depth so that its lower face will project out of the box, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, when placed therein, the stone being then maintained in place by a spring arm 16 secured by one end to the plate. 7, its free end extending adjacent the forward end of the Specificationof Lettrs1 atent. "p t t jjuni l Applicationfiled 'February14,1921: Serial" Edi 144 ,9 12.
primons awhen- Mata efdisks are; used and 19 a portion'of the harrow frame, while 20 indicates a'rod extending between the re spective plates 1 and spring plates 7' having secured thereon centrally of and above each hand operated rod 23 led to any convenient r part of the machine within easy reach of the operator.
The manner in which my device is "operated willbe apparent, it being understood that there are as many of the devices just described clamped to the cleaner bar as there are disks, being held in alignment with each other by means of the aligning bar 18, so that the respective emerystones will bear on the respective disks at-"the cutting edges, bein held thereon against lifting by any suita le means,'if desired, when, by moving the harrow to rotate the axle, and operating.
the cams to depress the plates 7 to carry the stones against the disks, the disks will be rotated against the emery stones and sharpened thereby.
From the foregoingit will be seen thatI. have provided a disk sharpening device which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, easy to install and'operate,
and which is useful and convenient.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A harrow disk sharpener comprising a plate provided at one end with a clamp whereby it may be secured to the harrow' frame, a spring arm secured at one end to said plate on its underside, a rinding stone detachably mounted on the un erside of said arm, and a cam mounted between said plate and said spring arm the operation of which depresses said'arm- 2. A sharpener for rotatable cutters such as harrow disks, which comprise-a sharpening element, yieldable supporting means nor mally holdin said sharpeningelement out of contact with the cutter to be sharpened thereby and a rotatable cam engageable with V 3. A harrow diskjsharpener comprising a plurality of spring plates, each secured to the harrow frame adjacent one of the disk, a sharpening element carried by each plate normally held out of contact with the disk adjacent thereto, and a shaft carrying a plurality of cam members engageable with said plates to force the sharpening elements into contact With the disks and means actuating said shafts.
4 A harrow disk sharpener comprising a supporting member adapted to be attached to a harrow frame adjacent one of the disks,
a box secured to the lower side of the sup- 10 porting member, said box being open at its of January 1921.
bottom and at one end, a grinding stone engaged in the box and removable therefrom through the open end of the box, said stone projecting from the bottom of the box and a member carried by the plate yieldably engaging said stone at the open end of the box to hold the stone into position. a
