APPARATUS FOR USE IN TEMPERING AND ANNEALING.
Application filed March 2, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, Diirrrm SnNsAUD LavnUD, otherwise known as Dmirrni SEN- sAUD Dn LAvAUD, a Brazilian citizen, and resident of Toronto, in the Dominion ol Canada, BERNARD FiLxNcis CLARK, a subject of the King ot Great Britain, and resident of London, England, and CHARLES WILLIAM BAiNns, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Melton Mowbray, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Apparatus 'for Use in Tempering andAnnealing, ol" which the following is a specitication.
This invention has reference to apparatus for use in tempering and annealing. The primary object ot the rinvention is to p'rovide improvements in plants wherein the heat contained in metallic or other objects after heat treatment, such as annealing, and given oit in a cooling chamber to which the objects when suiiiciently heated are trailsierred is usefully employed.
In accordance with this invention heat utilization apparatus such as a steam gen-k erator with or without a superheatcr is placed in the cooling chamber to usefully absorb the heat given olf by the cooling' objects as distinct 'from absorbing the heat by water acketing the wall of the chamber. Moreover when objects are not passing through the heating chamber or furnace and cooling chamber the heat of the hot air or gases normally used in the heating chamber is utilized by passing the said air or gases into and through the cooling chamber for absorption of their heat by the heat utilizing apparatus therein.
A further feature ot' the invention consists in the provisionotl means whereby each treated object after passage through the cooling chamber may be subjected to a quenching operation or to an operation which coats or covers it with a preservative or other composition.
To enable the invention to be clearly understood and readily carried into etlect the same will now be described more tully with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a longitudinal sectional ele-4 vation of a complete heating and cooling Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 20, 1922.
Serial No. 540,480.
plant embodying the features of our invention and adapted particularly for the heat treatment of metal pipes.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan approximately on the lines 2-2, 2L-2 of Figure 1.
Figures 3', il and 5 are vertical cross-sectional views taken on the lines 3 3, 4 4 and 5 5 respectively on Figure 2.
The heating chamber' is designated by the reference letter A, the cooling chamber by B, and the transporting means by C. Beneath the heating chamber A are regenerators a and within and in the upper region oi the cooling chamber B is a tubular steam generator b. The transporting means C are in the i'orm of a pair of endless conveyor chains having spacing prongs c. The pipes gravitatc down rails D from the feeding end outside the chamber A to the delivery end outside the chamber B under the control of the chains C which pass around the wheels E driven by a motor F. The chains themselves are supported and guided during' their travel by upper and lower guide rails G and H. .l is a receptacle containing water, oil or other liquid to which the pipes pass and through which they'are conveyed by the star shaped revolving conveyor K driven from the motor F. The gearing from the motor F to the chain C on the one hand and to the revolving conveyor K on the other hand is such that the spokes of the conveyor K (ro-operate in succession with illie successive pipes escaping Jfrom the chain L is a tunnel communicating outwardly with a smoke stack and inwardly with a central passage M situated beneath the cooling chamber and controlled by dampers N and C adapted to be raised and lowered alternately by gearing operated from a common gear wheel P actuated by gearing' outside the plant. Vhen the damper N is down and the damper O is up, there is a clear way from the chamber B down the vertical shafts Q and along passage M to the tunnel L. Cn the other hand when as under normal working conditions the damper N is up and the damper O is down, there is a clear way 'for the hot air or gases from the chamber A down the vertical passagesA3 and through the regenerators a to the pas- F ig. 2. By means of these dampers R and S either of the corresponding passages may be closed and the corresponding regenerators a rendered inoperative.
The heating chamber A has side openings controlled by balanced doors A and communicates direct With the cooling chamber by the archway A2. A3 and At are vertical passages communicating-With the heating chamber and the regenerators a. The passage A4 is the uptake passage from the regenerators to the combustion chamber.
The air and gas for combustion for heating the chamber A is led through suitable passages into the mixing chamber A5.
From the foregoing description and ltrom a consideration ol the drawings it will be understood that during the normal operation of the furnace the damper N is up and the damper O is down and the heated articles pass into the chamber A Where they are heated by contact with the hot air or gases and then pass into the cooling chamber B Where they give off their heat to the steam generator and then pass through the quenching or coating bath or receptacle J. `When articles are not being treated but it is nevertheless desired to keep the heating chamber A hot in readiness, the damper N is lowered and the damper O is raised so that the hot air or gases proceeding from the chamber A pass through the archway A2 directly to and through the cooling chamber B where the heat is usefully absorbed by the contents of the steam generator the said air or gases proceeding from the chamber B down the shafts Q and alongpassage M to the timnel L.
What We claim andy desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States isz l. Apparatus for use in heat treatments such as tempering and annealing, comprising a heating chamber, a cooling chamber, and heat utilizing apparatus comprising a steam generator placed in the cooling chamber to absorb the heat given off by the heated objects when in the cooling chamber.
2. In an annealing furnace having a heating chamber, a cooling chamber containing means for absorbin heat from the objects or articles as they cool, and means for feeding the objects or articles through said chambers, the method which comprises normally leading the gases of combustion away trom the cooling chamber When said chambers are in use and diverting said gases through said cooling chamber When said chambers are not in use.
3. In an annealing furnace having a heating chamber, a cooling chamber containing means for absorbing heat from the objects or articles as they cool, means for feeding the objects or articles throughsaid chambers, and a regenerator, the method which comprises normally leading the gases of combustion through said regenerator when said chambers are in use and diverting said gases away from said regenerator and through said cooling chamber When said chambers are not in use.
et. Apparatus for use in heat treatments such as tempering and annealing, comprising a heating chamber, a cooling chamber in connection With said heating chamber, heat utilizing means-in said cooling chamber, a conveyor for transporting the metallic or other objects through said heating chamber and cooling chamber, and means whereby, when objects are not passing through the heating chamber and cooling chamber but said heating chamber is being maintained hot the hot air or gases therefrom are directed into the cooling chamber for absorption of their heat by the heat utilizing means therein.
5. Apparatus comprising a heating chamber, a cooling chamber communicating with said heating chamber, a steam generator in said cooling chamber, transporting means for travel through said chambers, means controlling the passage of heating medium to and from said chambers and between them and means for subjecting the heat treated articles to a liquid quenching or coating operation.
