COMBINATION TABLE AND CHAIR.
Application filed January 26, 1922. Serial No; 531,834.
To all whom-it may concern Be it known that I, TOM Do oszUK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Polley, in the county of Taylor and State of Wi consin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Tables and Chairs, of which the following is a specificution.
A- prominent object of this invention is to provide an article of furniture consisting of a table having seats so connected therewith, that they may be folded beneath the table top in a manner to economize space.
Another object is the provision of means whereby one or more-of the seats may be extended for use without disturbing those remaining folded. 1
A further object is the means provided for supporting the extended seats so that no strain is communicated to the table frame and danger of overturning the table by unbalanced weight is positively prevented.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the table showing the seats in extended position.
Figure 2 is a side elevational viewof the same.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevational view showing the position of a seat when folded under the table.
Figure l is a partial sectional view showing the means of attaching the seat to the seat frame.
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the back folded on to the seat member.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the seat.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 designates a table top to which are attached a plurality of legs 11, secured at their lower ends by cross bars 12, which also serve as foot rests, and swivel casters 13, carrying rolls 14:, are provided for moving the table along the floor.
Pivotally engaged, at a central position with respect to the cross bars 12, by a pivot 15-, is a curved seat column 16,'having an annular shouldered head 17 slidably engaged in a recess 18, cut in the underside of the chair seat 20 and retained therein by a pair of spaced plates 21 and 22; It rabbet 23 at the rear uppersurfaceof Specification of Letters Patent; Patented J 11 11 6 20, 1922; i
the seat acts as a stop for the lower edge i of a seat back 24:, hingedly engagedto the;
1 A forked element 26, integral with the convex side of the column 16, carries a supporting leg 27, pivotally engaged by the pivot pin 28 passing therethrough. Links 29 are provided'for holding the supporting legs in extended position, as in Figure 2 or folded as in Figure 3.
Referring to Figure 3, it will be seen that the rear edge of the seat 20, having the rabbet element 23, is engaged within a recess formed inthe underside of the table top' 10,
and is held in locked position by the action of the tension spring 30, positioned in the seat recess 18, and connected at its ends to the column head 17 and theend of the recess.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple devicefor this purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict the details to -the exact construction shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made without conflicting with the scope of the appended.
claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r An articleof furniture'comprising a table, legs rigidly attached thereto, cross bars joining said legsat their lower ends, chairs haviug seats, backs connected to said seats by pivot links, rabbets formed at the rear edge of the seats and engageable with said backs, means co-operative with said rabbets for securing the seats when folded under the table, curved columns pivoted at their lower ends to said cross bars, shouldered. heads on said columns, said seats being slidably connected with said heads, plates for securing the column head in recesses formed in the seat, spring means for maintaining the seat in looking position, and means pivoted to said column for supporting the seat when in extended position.
In witness whereof I affix my signature.
TOM DOROSZUK.
