Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 20, 1922.
Application filed January 27, 1922. Serial No. 532,220..
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MrnnL T. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Sullivan and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Lumber to be Gut, of which the follow ing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a device for holding lumber to be cut, and the object is the provision of means for cutting lumber in a true circle by a band saw, and my device is used largely in the manufacture of table tops.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an apparatus employing my invention, in the cutting of round table tops.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary, top, plan view of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the bracket device.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of the bracket device.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the support or frame, comprising uprights 2; the uprights 2 have bifurcations 3 formed in their upper ends, and in these bifurcations are bolts 1. These bolts secure guide bars 5 on the uprights in an adjusted position. Each guide bar is provided with a longitudinally-extending slot 6 formed in its side, and by means of a bolt 7, positioned in the registering slots 6, of bars 5, the sliding bearing block 8 is retained in an adjusted position upon the frame 1. Block Sis provided with a vertical aperture 9, in which is positioned a supporting pin or shaft 10 of the bracket device 11 (Fig. 3).
The shaft 10 is provided, near its upper end, with an integral collar 12, which prevents the shaft from slipping too far through the aperture 9 of block 8. Shaft 10 is provided with an upper, reduced end 13 that extends into the base 14 of the portion of base 14:, and integral with the top of the back is a horizontal top 17. A set- I screw 18 is threaded through the forward portion of top 17 and is adapted to engage the lumber 19, for holding the lumber upon the bracket 11. In positioning the lumber 19 upon the bracket, the rear edge of the lumber is forced against the stop pins 15 (Fig. 1), and then the set-screw 1-8 is turned to cause the inner end thereof to tightly engage or clamp against the lumber.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: Upon placing the lumber in the bracket device, as stated, theinner edge of the lumber will be just at the center of the top of shaft 10, with the set-screw 18 pressing down on the lumber, holding it in place; the lumber is then out by the band saw 20 (the'lumber being turned to the saw as it progresses) and the lumber being thus cut in a true circle, or semicircle, as desired, and the size of the lumber to be out to be regulated by adjusting the bracket device along the bars 5.
While I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, and have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates, during the extensive manufacture of the same and I,
' therefore, reserve the right to make such alterations or changes as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, a bearing block adjustably mounted on said frame, of a supporting shaft provided near its upper end with an integral collar and with a reduced upper end mounted within the bearing block, a bracket device comprising an elongated base having said reduced end of the shaft positioned therein, the collar on said shaft engaging the bearing block, vertical stop pins formed upon the base near its rear edge and at opposite ends of the base, a vertical, integral back formed upon the base at the center of its rear edge, a horizontal top integral with the back and overhanging the base, and a set-screw at the front edge of and extending through the top, substansupported upon said bolts, a bolt in said slottially as shown and described. ted bars, a bearing. block secured to said 2. In a device of the class described, the last-mentioned bolt, and a bracket device 10 combination with a "frame provided with upcarried by said bearing block. 5 rights, each upright provided with a bifur- In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my cation formed in its upper end, belts in the signature. bifurcations of said uprights, slotted bars MIKEL T. RICHARDS.
