Be it known that VILLIAM E. MOODY, a
.citizen of the United States` residing at Columbus. in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loading Machines. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loading machinesV designed for use particularly in mine work for gathering and loading the coal into suitable receptacles. The type of machine to which this present application particularly relates is shown and described in Patent No. 1.362.889. issued December 21. 1920, to N. A. Newdick. In this type of machine. there is provided a conveyor pan and an endless conveyor of the side arm type operating thereover` the conveyor pan being itself pivotally mounted adjacent its rea-r so that its front end may be caused to sweepv back and forth over the mine floor to gather the coal prior to conveying it rearwardly. In this type of operation, trouble has frequently been encountered by the front or nose end of the machine climbing the coal pile instead of forcing its way underneath it and it is this evil effect that my present invention attempts primarily to overcome.
lith this construction in mind. therefore, my invention resides essentially in the combination with a conveyor pan having a depressed forward end or nose portion. which conveyor pan is pivotally mounted adjacent its rear end upon a suitable support and whose weight is sustained by the depressed front portion by direct bearing upon the floor. of means located on the underneath side of the nose portion and covering a comparatively small area thereof so that the weight of the forward ortion of the conveyor pan is correspon ingly concentrated upon a small area. In this manner, any loose particles lying upon the floor of the mine will be crushed because of the concentration of weight or if these particles should take the form of inequalities in the floor level such as small pieces of coal or slate which had not been completely loosened or separated from the floor proper` they are destroyed in some manner such as shearing because of the concentrated weight.
broken down One form 1n whlch my invention may be practiced is that of a peripheral band-of comparatively small area located adjacent the edge of the depressedv portion whereby small particles may be brushed or sheared from their anf chorage on the mine floor during the sweeping movement of the forward portion of the conveyor. The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts and wherein.
Figure 1 is a small diagrammatical view illustrating the tvpe of machine in connection with which my invention is employed.

The unit shown in Figure 1 is similar in fundamental respects to that described in the application above referred to and conv stitutes a supporting truck or base unit 1 having wheels 2 and 3 mounted in connection therewith. A conveyor pan 4 is provided and is pivotally mounted adjacent its rear end about a vertical pivot 5 and is also so constructed so that it may swing about a horizontal pivot such as the rear axle 6. The extreme forward portion of the conveyor pan is provided with a depressed end or nose portion 7 which nose portion is arranged and designed to slide over the mine floor.l This nose portion also carries a sprocket wheel 8 over which the conveyor chain 9 passes. the latter being provide with ights 10 for attacking the coal to gather it and convey it rearwardly to any,

comparatively small area to thereby produce a brushing effect upon any material over which the pan may pass whlch is susceptible of being crushed. 1 have provided the 'peripheral portion of this depressed end with a comparatively narrow band 16 whose outer edge is chamfered to knife form as shown at 17. By this arrangement the only frictional contact of the forward end of the mine Hoor is along the bottom of the band 16 and consequently the hollowed portion `18 between the sides ofthe depressed end permit the machine to operate over various inequalities in themine floor without lifting the edge portion 16 off the floor. Likewise. any tendency to riding or cramming up the coal pile is eliminated because .the rentire weightl is concentrated upon a comparativelyv small areawhich will either crush or shear the loose material upon the Hoor as it sweeps back'and forth.
j From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings. it will therefore be apparent that f1 have provided a type of machine embodying al highly utilitarian structure. This structure is such that any tendency of the forward or nose portion of the machine to leave the floor is entirely7 eliminated.

1 1n a loading machine. a portable base unit. a conveyor pan including a depressed forward end'or nose portion arranged to operate in advance of said base unit. a pivotalconnection between said pan and base unit. said connection serving to permit the nose portion to sweep horizontally back and forth across the floor of a mine. and means located on said nose portion and projecting below the under side thereof and serving to permit of the concentration of the weight imposed upon the forward end of the pan thereon.

In a loading machine. a conveyor pan including a depressed forward end or nose portion. a supporting truck for the rear portion o-f said pan andupon which the pan is mounted forfpivotal movement about a vertical axis, said nose portion being arranged to operate in advance of said truck and directly' over a mine floor. and means located on the under side of said nose portion and covering a comparatively`small area thereof. said means serving to permit of the concentration of the weight of and on the forward portion of the pan upon the reduced bearing Asurfaces provided by said means.
4. 1n a loading machine. a conve-yor pan including a depressed substantially flat forward end or nose portion, a supporting truck Afor the rear portion of said pan and to which ,the latter is pivoted, the said nose portion of the panbeing arranged to operate directly over a mine floor and to receive the weight of the material to be loaded thereon. a relatively narrow peripheral strip secured to the under edge of said nose portion, said strip projecting belowsaid nose portion to confine the weight of and on that portion of the machine upon the reduced bearing surfaces provided by said st-rip.
5. 1n a loading machine, a conveyor pan -100 including a depressed forward end or nose portion. a supporting truck for the rear portion of said pan and to which the vlatter is pivotally connected. whereby7 said nose portion will be permitted to oscillate over a mine floor at positions in advance of said truck,4 a relatively narrow peripheral st-rip located along the under marginal edges of said nose portion. said strip serving to permit of thev concentration ofthe weight of and on the forward portion of the machine upon the comparatively small bearing surfaces provided by said strip, and an outwardly and downwardly inclined peripheral surface formed upon said strip.
6. 1n a loading machine. a portable base unit. a conveyor pan including a depressed forward end or nose portion mounted upon said base unit in such manner as to permit the nose portion to have a back and forth 120 sweep movement across the floor of a mine,
unit, a conveyor pan including a depressed forward end or nose portion, the latter being capable of swinging back and forth across the floor of a mine and beneath the material to be loaded, and inclined surfaces provided upon said nose portion around the peripheral edges thereof, whereby upon sweep movement of said nose portion the pressure exercised by said material upon the inclined surfaces will serve to maintain the 10 nose portion beneath the material to be loaded.
