Description

w. 0. DOUGLASS.. PLOW POINT.
APPLICATION FILED APR, 14. I92!- 1,420,024. Patented June 20, 1922.,
WILLIAM 0.. DOUGLASS. OF BROKEN ARROW, OKLAHOMA;
PLOVT POINT.
Application filed April 14:, 1921. Serial No. 461,222.
To all whom it may concern:
ie it known. that l, W ILLIAM O. DonoLAss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident oi? Broken Arrow, in the county of Tulsa and State of Uklahoina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plowpoints; and I do hereby declare the following to be a lull, clear. and exact description oli the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements .111 plow points and more particularly to such as may be en'iployed in the repalr or worn shares, one object ot the invention being to provide a plow point which shall be so constructed that blanks For a number of points may be economically out From a suitable plate of metal.
A ilurther object is to construct a plow point in such manner that it may be readily welded to a plow share and replace a point which may have become worn.
A further object is to provide a simple and ellicient welded plow point and share structure.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter lorth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure l is a view showing a plow share and my improved point to be welded thereto; Figure 2 is a similar view showing the point partially applied to the share. and Figure 3 a view showing the point fully applied to the share.
1 represents a plow share comprising a blade or body portion 2 and a landside memher 3. lhe plow share may be provided at its forward end with a tapering tongue lwhich projects tor the most part, from the landside member 3 and forwardly beyond the 'l orward end 5 oi the blade portion of the share. To a plow share thus formed my improved point 5% secured by welding.
The point comprises a body or lade portion 9 which may be made tapering or wedge-shaped from the end 10 to the end 1'1, and at the end 10 of said body portion 9, a shank 12 is provided said shank being located at or near one side edge of the body portion 9 and projecting rearwardly from the same, and at the juncture Off said shank with the body portion 9, a shoulder 13 1s located and lidrms a. continuation of the end 10 of the body portion 9. A number of blanks for making points 8 may be cut from a plateot metal without waste.
in applying the point to the share the shank 12 will be placed against the under face of the tapering tongue 4 and will be secured in place by welding. The point 8 will then be bent (on'the line of the shank, see Figure 2) and made to overlie the tongue l and the end 11 of the body portion 9 will be caused to extend to the end 5 of the blade of the share where it will be welded, said weld extending the full extent of the end ll of the point body and the portion of said point body which overlies the upper face of the tongue at may be welded to the latter. The exposed races of the point will be made to properly align with the contiguous portions of the members of the share and the end 10 of the body 9 of the device will be reduced in any suitable manner to provide a cutting edge 14 "for the applied point as shown in Figure 3.
If desired the point 8 may be bent and finished to the shape shown in Figure 3 prior to being applied and welded to the share.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. A plow point comprising a body portion and a siiank, said body portion tapering "from its juncture with the shank, and said shank being in line with one edge of the body portion and ofiset with respect to the opposite edge and one face of said body.
2. The combination with a plow share comprising a blade member. and a land side member having a forwardly tapering tongue of a point comprising a body portion and a shank, said body portion tapering from its juncture with the shank and said shank being in line with one edge of the body portion and offset with respect to the opposite edge thereol, said body portion or the point overlying said tongue and said shank underlying said tongue, said point being. welded to the share.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM O. DOUGLASS.
