CONDUI'L' SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pgmgntggd June) 113, 1922.,
Application filed February 10, 1921. Serial No. 443,961.
To (ZZZ 10/ 20271 it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE E. BECK and lliroiins iZiRKPBJlRICH, citizens of the United Sta residing, respectively, at Cleveland, the county of Cuyahoga and State of Chic, and lialce W orth, in the county oi' ahn Beach and State of i lorida, have invenl certain new and useful linprorements in Conduit Supports, of which the following is a specification.
llhis invention relates to improvements in the supports tor conduits such as are ens-- ployed in housing the wires oi block signal systems, interli'icking systems, electric conductor wires, and so forth, in connection with railway. The invention is designed as an improvement on the conduit support shown in our Patent No. 1,332,503, issued March 2, 1920.
One of the objects of the present invention to provide a conduit support of the type disclosed in our said patent comprising a cap constructed in sections, thus adapting the same to receive and hold conduits o't various dimensions.
Another object oi the invention is to con struct the cap in sections so that sections of standard size may he fitted to posts of various cross sectional dimensions and lirmly and securely anchored in place thereon and n a manner to provid against any loose it between the parts sitter the cap has been mounted and secured upon the post.
Another object ot the invention is to so construct the post and the cap which is to be secured thereon that the parts may be assembled and connected together readily and without regard to expansion or contraction of the parts under temperatur changes.
in the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the support embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the upper end oi the supporting post, and the securing bolt, one of the cap sections being shown in elevation.
Figur 3 is a view in elevation of one of the cap sections removed from the post.
Figure 4- is a view similar to Figure 2 illustrating a slight modification of the invention.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of cap section.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates in general the supporting post and the numeral 2 the cap which is mounted at the upper end of the post and vwhich supports and holds in place the conduit through which the wires or other elements run, the conduit being, however, not shown as it forms no part of the present invention and is in the natl'ire of the ordinary rectangular Wooden trunlr. The post 1 may he of concrete or any other material found suitable for the purpose and of any desired dimensions and shape although it is contemplated that it shall be rectangular in horizontal section at and adjacent its upper end; The post is to he set into the ground and anchored in any of: the ordinary ways and for the purpose of the present invention the same, in the forms shown in Figures 1 and 2, is formed in its upper end with a transversely extending channel which is indicated by the numeral 3 and which may he of any desired depth and which opens at its ends through opposite faces of the post. In Figure 1, the post is illustrated as of oblong rectangular form at its upper end with the channel 3 extending longitudinally of the said end and, therefore, opening at its ends through the narrower faces of the post but it will be understood that the channel might extend at right angles to the direction illustrated, in which event it would open through the hroader taces or sides of the post.
vhe cap 2 comprises a pair of sections which are oi? counterpart form and hence a description of one will sutlice for both. Each cap section comprises a body 41- having an upstanding cheek piece 5 and a depending cheek piece 6, which pieces may be relatively offset as illustrated in Figures 1 and 5 of the drawings or may, if desired, occupy the same plane. Also, the cheek pieces may be of the curvilinear contour illustrated in the drawings or of any other desired marginal outline and suitably reinforced in any desired manner, as for example, by being thickened as at 7, except at their marginal portions. A transverse, horizontally disposed, web 8 is formed integral with the body 4 of each section, at the juncture of the cheek pieces 5 and 6, and is designed to rest flat upon the upper end surface of the post 1 when the section is assembled with the post, the inner face of the cheek piece 6 resting against the adjacent end or side face of the said post. provided at its opposite end edges with de The web 8 is i pending flanges 9 occupying parallel vertical planes and designed to engage or extend beside the opposite side faces of the post 1, in the manner most clearly shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4 of the drawings, the flanges serving to prevent displacement of the cap sections with relation to the end of the post in one direction and the engagement of the cheek piece 6 against the face of the post serving to prevent displacement in an other direction. The sections l are formed in their cheek pieces 6 with openings and, if desired, with bosses 10 surrounding the said openings, the openings being indicated by the numeral 11 and receiving the shank of a bolt 12 which extends between and con nects the two sections of the cap, it being understood that when the bolt is tightened, the cap sections will be drawn firmly into engagement with the end of the post 1 and securely anchored upon the post. By reference to Figure 1, it will be observed that the bolt 12 is received within the channel 3 and itwill be understood that inasmuch as the post 1 is thus formed to receive the bolt, the bolt may be readily assembled with the post and likewise, the cap may be readily removed from the post by partly loosening the bolt and lifting the same together with the cap sections in a vertical direction. Furthermore, by forming the channel 3 in the post, some latitude is permitted in attaching the cap and its securing bolt to the post, so that the openings 11 in the cheek pieces (5 of the cap sections do not require to be brought into exact registration with the end of an opening formed through the post and which it might be found difiicult to accomplish if the post were provided with an opening extending therethrough instead of with the channel. However, as illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings, the post might be formed with such an opening which, in the said figure, is indicated by the numeral 13, but in this event, the opening will be of some form other than cylindrical and disposed with its longer transverse axis vertical so that substantially the same advantages are obtained as by the provision of the channel 8.
As illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings, the cap sections may be provided with outstanding apertured lugs 14 as in our patented structure so that a plurality of the caps may be connected together when disposed upon posts arranged side by side.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
conduit support comprising a post having a vertically elongated opening extending transversely through its upper end portion and a cap comprising a pair of sections each consisting of a body having a web outstanding from one face thereof and disposed above the upper end of the post, a cheek piece projecting above the said web, a cheek piece projecting below the web, the said web at its opposite lateral edges being provided with outstanding flanges embracing the opposite side faces of the post to center the cap section upon the upper end of the post when disposed thereon, each cap section being provided with a bolt opening to be brought into communication with the corresponding end of the opening in the post when the section is properly centered with relation thereto, by engagement of the side flanges with the faces of bolt fitted through the bolt openings and securing the sections to the post and extend ing through the said opening in the post.
In testimony whereof we a'liix or signatures.
