Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1922.
Application filed December 7, 1921. Serial No. 520,473.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JULIUS MALTBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Garment-FastenerButtons; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
'F ig. 1 a view in front elevation of the lower end of a tape provided with my improved garment-fastener button.
Fig. 2 a similar view with the fastening*- loop thereof removed.
Fig. 3 an edge view thereof.
Fig. 11 an enlarged view in vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 a perspective view showing the two complementary threading members of the button detached and separated.
Fig. 6 a similar view of one of the modified forms which my improved button may assume.
My invention relates to an improvement in garment-fastener buttons, such as` are used in garter-clasps, stocking and hose-supporters, and kindred articles, the object be ing to produce a button of the character described of superior comfort and eiliciency.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a garment-fastener button having a button-base provided with two upstanding, serrated, self-embedding prongs having pointed ends and an initially-solid, rubber buttonehead into which the said prongs are forced and by the serrated edges of which it is held in place.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, as herein shown, I employ two complementary, onepiece button-base parts 10, each having an elongated threading-opening 11, a curved outer edge 12, a straight inner end 13 and an integral, upstanding, headless, self-embed ding prong l5 having serrated edges 16 and a pointed end 17. With such button-base parts as described, I employ an initiallysolid rubber button-head 18, into which the two serrated prongs 15 are thrust, Ltheir pointed ends making their own way into the soft rubber in which their serrated edges are embedded, so as to effectthe firm anchorage of the head upon the prongs, which, however, are not deprived of a certain amount of relative movement, due to the elastic character of the head, so that the button-structure may respond in a measure to the strains which may be thrust upon it in use.
If desired, the pointed ends of the prongs may be constructed as shown in Figure 6. in which they are given an arrowshaped form 19, so as to overhang the serrated sides of the prongs, the anchoring power of which is thus somewhat increased.
But Ido not limit myself toforming the button-base parts or the self-embedding prongs thereof in any particular form, the salient feature of my invention being the employment of a button-base having a plurality of self-embedding prongs adapted to be thrust into an initially-solid rubber button-head for the firm anchorage of the same thereupon. y p
In the form of my improved button herein shown, the button-base parts 10 are additionally connected by the lowerend of the tape or webbing 20, which is threaded through their elongated threadingbpenings 11 and stitched as at 21. The wire loop 22 is mounted upon the webbing 2O in the usual manner and co-acts with the button-stru@ ture in the usual way, with the exception that in the case of diagonal strains upon the loop 22, the same may act through the button-head 18 to effect a slight displacement .of the button-base parts with respect to each other, so as to accommodate the button to the direction of the strains, and thus improve its grip and minimize the danger of cutting the fabric.
I claim:
1. A garment-fastener button having a button-base provided with two self-embed` binntion with two Complementary buttonbase, parte, each having a t-hleadng-Openhg and an upstnndng serrated, self-embedding prong ogmed with a pointed end, Of an n'tullyesold, 1ribhel button-heed `into which the said postsmethrust-and in whch they are held by their serrated edges, Whereby the head s anchored rmlv'tothem.
v In testimony whereof, have sighed this speelentlon u1 the presence of two subserib 10 111g Wltnesses.
