Be it known that I, Roi;v H. GERARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and. useful mprovements in Mixing Machines. of which. the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
This invention relates to mixing machines in general and in particular to a type thereof Yfor compounding rubber and various ingredients into a batch suitable for sprea.d ing, calenderin tubing or other hke operations incidentalg to the manufacture of vu;l canized articles. The old practice was to prepare n batch on a mill consisting of con miei-ating;r rollers, powerfully driven, which squeezed and Worked the mass into a more or less homogeneous condition. An operator was're uired to attend the mill and the thoroug ness of mix depended in large measure upon his individualskill.
The present invention relates to a mechanical mixer requiring no attention after chargingwhich is much more rapid than the old mixing mill. Mechanical mixing niecliines of variousforms have been proposed heretofore and thisiinvention aims to pro vide new und improved features rendering the. machines more practical` for manufacturers.
Briefly, it consists in a tub or container in which rotate agitators and. about the axis of one of which agitators, the container or tub may be tilted for convenience in discharging a properly pre ered batch Without stoppin f` the rotation o the agitetors. A cornhinel cover and hopper is movably supported at the top of the container or tub for convenient charging of the materials und for convenient removal to a non-obstructing positicn when the container is tilted to discharge a prepared batch.

Between the plates or brackets 24, a second Huid pressure cylinder 25 is suitably fixed for operation of a plunger 26 that is yieldably connected, by coiled s rings 27 and a sleeve 28 slidable on the p unger rod, to trunnion pins 29 that are loosely received by the lever arms 22. As will be obvious, operation of the plunger 2.6 will move the lever arms 22 about the fulcrum 23 and lift the combined cover and ho per 19-20 away from the container l.
o impart, in addition to the above mentioned lifting.movement, a turning movement to the combined cover and hopper 19-2O 'about the pin 21 as a center, links 30 are hinged thereto as indicated at 3l, these links being also loosely pinned as indicated at 32 to upstanding bracket pieces 33, which latter are integral with the lates or brackets 24 and therefore also xed relative to the container 1. 'Consequently, lifting the lever 22 not only lifts the combined cover and hopper 19'20 but also turns the latter as indicated in dotted lines in Fi'. 1.
Preferably, but not necessarily, te hopper portion 20 closed by a shutter 34 hinged to a hand-lever 35 that is-fulcrumed as indicated at 36 tothe combined cover and or enlargement being provided at the openlng 37 where the shutter asses through a wall of the hopper` to permit the incidental free movement that is necessary.
In operation, the agitators a) are continuously driven.- Supposing container 1 to be empty, material is charged into the ho per portionV 20 and the shutter 34 retracte by suitable movement of the hand-lever 35. The rubber, sulphur and other ingredients that havebeen'previously gathered in the desired roportions are then introduced and fall witliin the range of action of the agitators 5'by which'they are vigorously worked and blended into a homogeneous mass. Without stopping the agitators, and at the completion of the' mix, the container l is swung to the` tilted position shown in Fig. 3, this being done by suitable operation of the -cylinder 18'. Then the combined cover and hopper 19-20 is swung to a clear or nonobstructin position and the mixedl batch discharl Preferably, the batch is discharge into a bucket 38 that rests on a conveyor or gravity run-way 39 having rollers 40. The container or tub 1 is then restored to its normal horizontal position ready for recharging andA another cycle of operations.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a simple, compact and readily operable device for mixing up batches of rubber composition. Its overall tailler. agitating meansrevolvable amount of head-room is required above the machine as heretofore seems to have been the case` The yieldi driving connection 27- 28 between the cylinder 25 and the lever 22 permits the necessary power operation of the combined cover and hopper and also insures against breakage in case of jam from charging of the container beyond its capacity.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is l. A mixing machine including in conibination, a container, agitating means within the container, means for actuating the agi tating means, a combined cover and hopper for completely confining material inthe container, means for tilting the container to discharge its contents, and means includin a lever movable about a fulcrum fixed relative to the container for removing the combined cover and hopper from a position obstructing discharge of the contents of the container.

In a mixing machine, a container, agitating means Within the container, in cornbination with a combined cover and ho per for completely closin the container, a ever fnlcrumed at "one si e of the container and articulated to said combined cover and hopper, and means for operatin said lever to lift the combined cover an hopper and open the container.
