Be it known that 1, ANDREW SALATA, a citizen of the United States, and a r sident of the city of New York, borough of lvlanhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Tool-Operating Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a tool-operating machine, and has particular reference to one adapted for use in connection with the operation of saws, files, and other similar devices.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, compact operating unit which can be Very readily handled and is particularly adapted to facilitate the manipulation of tools in unusual positions.
Another object resides in the provision of a simple, strong and compact operating casing which is composed of a minimum number of parts, economically manufactured, and readily assembled and disassembled.
A further object resides in the provision of means whereby the tool which is being actuated by the operating device is held thereon in such a position as to permit of the use of the tool in narrow and cramped quarters, which is not ordinarily possible.
A still further object resides in the par ticular construction and arrangement of parts which are hereinafter described and. claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, of which Figure l is a side View of the device;
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view with the cover portion removed; and
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section.
The preferred form of my invention, as shown in the drawings, comprises a casing which is hollowed out and is at one end 1 long and narrow in shape and at the other end 2 enlarged and somewhat circular in form. This hollowed out casing is provided with a bottom or cover portion 3. The long narrow end portion 1 is provided with an aperture l through which is adapted to extend one portion of a reciprocating tool holder 5. The other end of this reciprocating tool holder is adapted to slide in a groove formed between integral guiding lugs 6 and 7 disposed on the inner surface of the bottom cover portion 3. enlarged circular hollow portion 2 of the casing is a revolving disk or wheel 8. On this disk is a pin 9 with which a crank arm 10 is connected. The other end'of the crank arm 10 is connected to a pin 11 disposed intermediate the length of the reciprocating The upper face of the disk or wheel 8 is connected to a shaft 12 which extends through a bearing portion 13 disposed on the upper face of the casing. This bearing portion 13 is formed in a handle or projecting portion let which extends up wardly from the top of the enlarged circular portion of the casing. The upper end of the shaft 12 is connected in any suitable manner to a flexible shafting such as 16 which may be connected at any point to a suitable source of power.
Any suitable tool, such as a file 16, may be inserted in an aperture in the end of the reciprocating tool holder 5 and adjusted and tightened therein by means of an adjusting screw 17. ther tools, of course, than files can be used, such as saws and similar de vices.
In the operation of the device, the rotation of the shaft 15 causes the reciprocation of the tool holder 5 through the intermediary of. the disk 8 and the pin 9. The tool 16 projecting longitudinally forward from the casing and in line with the axis thereof, can be used to operate in narrow cramped quarters, which would not otherwise be possible except for the position of the tool and its operation in the manner shown and de scribed.
Minor modifications may, of course, be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A tool-operating machine, which comprises a casing, a tool carrier reciprocally prises a casing having an aperture at one end, a reciprocating tool carrier disposed Within the casing, one end of the carrier adapted to extend Within the aperture in the casing, a cover for the casing, a plurality of lugs on the cover adapted to engage a portion of the carrier to guide the same, a disk Within the casing, a power shaft connected to the disk and to the casing and connected to a suitable source of power, and a crank arm connecting the disk with the carrier. v
4. A tool-operating machine, Which comprises a casing, a tool carrier disposed Within the casing said carrier extending longitudinally from one end of the casing and adapted to carry a tool thereon; and tool fastening means disposed on the carrier outside of the casing. I
5. A tool-operating machine, Which comprises a casing or support and a reciprocating tool carrier extending longitudinally from one end of the casing and means on the end of the carrier outside of the casing to permit the fastening of a tool thereto.
