Description

1.1, DIXON, MULTIPLE EXPANDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 23, I921- Patented May 30, 1922.
INVENTOR I T/Mmasd Dzxon.
J 7 A///\ v My tlhll thliiltl earner series.
THOMAS J. DIXON, OF IVIADISON, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR T0 LOVEJOY TOOL \VORKS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
I'IIULTIPLE EXPANDER.
Application filed March 23, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS J. DixoN, a citizen of the Unitec States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of l Visconsin, have invented a new and Improved Multiple Expander; of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in multiple tube expanders of the type in which the shell is stepped and provided with sets of expanding rollers of corresponding diameters.
Heretoiore in expanders-ot this type (see my Patent No. 1,379,087, dated May 24-, 1921) the shoulders oi the shell forming the steps are used as stops for the expander to keep it from creeping forward within the tube.
My invention has for its object to provide other means than these shoulders, especially in those expanders in which the increase in diameter from one step to. the other is very slight or gradual.
In the drawings Figure l is an elevation or" one form of expander embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view of another form of the same.
l igure 3 is a cross section on the line of Figure 1.
In the drawings in which like numerals and letters of reterence indicate like parts in all of the figures, the expander shell consists of the parts 1, 2 and 3, constituting the several steps of the shell, the part 1 being of greatest diameter and the parts, and
3 of reducing diameters progressively, it
being understood that there are as many parts or sections or steps to the shell as may be desired.
The shell is provided wi h pockets 4 tor the rollers 5, the rollers being arranged in sets, one set for each step or the shell, the rollers also progressively increasing in diameter from the end or the shell of smallest diameter toward the end of largest diam eter. by fitting them through the bore of the shell and are held against coming out radially by lips 7 in the usual way, a mandrel 6 being provided for forcing the rollers 5 radially outward for the usual purposes.
The roller pockets 4 of the several steps Specification of Letters Patent.
The rollers 5 are placed into position- Tatented May 30, 1922. Serial No. 454,71
may be arranged in staggered relation as shown in Figure l or in endwise alignment as shown in Figure 2, as may be found most convenient.
All of the foregoing construction of parts may he of the usual and ordinary construction and, per se, constitutes no part of the present invention.
Instead of using the shoulders formed by the meeting portions of adjacent shell sections as stops for the expander, I provide screws 9 which are tapped into bores 8 in, the shell to the rear or the rollers adjacent thereto and the screws 9 may be provided with revolving thimbles 10 for reducing triction, if desired.
The screws 9 are threaded left handed when the expander feeds right handed, so that the feed of the expander will tend to tighten the screws rather than loosen them.
The largest section oi": the shell 1 alone may he provided with the stop screws 9 or each section may have bores 8 into which the stop screw can be placed accordingly as it is desired to use one or more of the expander sections.
By this construction, I am enabled to make an expander in which the increase in diameter from the smallest to the largest step can be very slight or gradual and yet provide means for stopping the forward feed of the expander in the tube at just the desired step and also enable the expander to be made I withoutan abnormal diameter at the largest end.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is believed the complete construction, the manner of operation and the advantages of my invention will be readily understood by
