To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, RALPH EHRENFELD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilkinsburg, in the county of Alleqheny and State of Pennsylvania, and IliROLD G. CALDWELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of WVilkinsbur in the county of Allegheny and State of ennsylvania,'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mountings for Sewing-Machine Motors, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to driving mechanism for sewing machines or other similar power-operated devices employing an elec tric motor attached thereto, and it has for its object to provide a structure wherein the machine and the motor are united ina novel manner to form a strong, rugged, compact and inexpensive structure.
It has been customary to drive a sewing machine by means of a separate motor so disposed upon the sewing machine table asto engage the hand wheel and which ma be removed when it is desired to close the machine or to mount the motor on the sewing machine head or to permanently and rigidly mount the motor on the base portion of the machine which moves with the head during the closing operation, the motor being disposed in an inoperative unobtrusive position when the machine is closed and being movable 'to. an operative position when open.
Our invention relates specifically to the latter type of machine and consists of a rugged, simple and inexpensive, as well as novel, means for accomplishing the desired result. i
For a further understanding of our invention, reference may now be had to the accompanying drawings, Figs. 1 and 2 of which are end and side elevational views,
with a motor mounted in accordance with our invention in its operative position; Fig.

4' is a detail View of one portion of the motor-mounting structure shown in the other fi ures.

and a hand wheel 3 mounted upon a shaft An electric motor 5 is provided with a drive wheel 6 upon a shaft 7 and is mounted upon a supporting structure 8. The supporting structure 8 comprises a main upright supporting member 9 provided with a base 10 which is bolted or otherwise secured to a base portion 11 of the machine head or to that portion of the table which folds with the machine head. The upper portion 12 of the member 9 (as best shown in Fig. 4;) is provided with a slot 13, the central portion of which is arcuate in shape, a portion 14, adjacent the hand wheel ofthe machine which extends in a vertical direction and a portion 15 at the opposite side thereof which extends in a horizontal direction and under a portion of the arcuate slot, forming a lip 16 therebetween. At the axis of the are formed by the slot is an opening 17 which receives a pivot pin or bolt 18. Upon the pin 18 is mounted a second supporting member 19 provided with two arms 20 and 21 which support a second pivot pin 22. Upon the pin 22 are pivotally mounted two supporting lugs 23 and 24 with which the frame of the motor 5 is provided. A spring 25 surrounds the pin 22 and engages the lug 23 at one end and the arm 21 at the other end and serves to bias the motor 5 towards the machine, about the pin 22 as an axis. The lug 23 is provided with a pin 26 which extends into the slot 13 in the member 9.
Having thus described the details of a structure embodying our invention, the operation thereof is as follows. When the motor is in its operative position, as shown in Fig. 2, the member 19 is in alinement 'with the portion 12 of the member 9, the
'is then turned about thepin 18 as an axis until it is substantially 90 from its former position, the pin 26 moving within the arouate portion 13 of the slot in the member 12. The motor is then released and the spring 25 moves it to a position beside the head 1 and beneath the arm 2, as best shown in Fig. 3, the pin 26 moving into horizontal portion 15 of the slot in the member 12.
It will be understood that the spring 25 continually exerts a force tending toturn the motor about the pin 22 as an axis and that the pin 26, riding within the slot, prevents this action except when the pin is at the one or the other end of the slot. If the pin 26 is at the end 14 of the slot, the spring causes it to move to the lower portion thereof, allowing the drive wheel to engage the hand wheel of the motor and when it is at the end 15 of the slot, it moves into the inner end of the horizontal portion of the slot, allowing, the spring to move the motor under the arm 2' and beside the head 1.
It will be understood that this same result could be accomplished by mounting the comprising support 9 upon the head 1 of the sewing machine or upon that is movable therewit Throughout this specification and in th claims, the term head refers, to the upright portion of supporting standards of the driven machine. While we have shown but one form of our invention, it will be understood, by those skilled in the art, that it is not so limited but is susceptible of various minor changes and modifications without departing fromthe spirit thereof and we desire, therefore,
that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art claims.
We claim as our 1nvent1on: 1. In combination .w th a driven machme comprising a driven wheel, a motor provided with a drive wheel adapted to engage said driven wheel, and a sup-port for said motor comprising means for permitting movement thereof with respect to said driven machine in a plurality of planes disposed at an angle to each other, and means for defining the path ofmoveme'nt of said motor.
