Description

L A. GASTEIGER. PNEUMATIC CONVEYER. APPLICATION FILED JAN- 7. 1920-.
L41 7 0mm Patented May 23, 1922 Phllflil'l tthfllll fi CONVIEYER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, MTEZQ Application filed'January 7, 1920. Serial No. 349,942.
To all Li')/l0l7b it may concern:
l e it known that T, JUsrUs l'arnstrnlenn, a citizen of the United ifitates, and resident of Der-moot, in the county of Allegheny and titate of Tennsylvania have invented a new and useful Tll'lPTOVGIIlGHt in Pneumatic tlonveycrs; and i do hereby declare the fol-- lowin to be a fulh clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a pneumatic con-- veyer.
The object of my invention is to provide a pneumatic conveyor for the conveying of grain, earth sand, lime, loose cement or other materials in which the material itself is employed as a seal to maintain the vacuum in the receiving chamber, the discharge from the receiving chamber being so controlled as to maintain this seal continuously during; the operation of the conveyor.
To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and cl aimed.
in the accompanying drawing, Fig. l is a vertical sectional. elevation; Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved pneumatic con veyer; and Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.
ll hile have illustrated my invention in connection with a portable pneumatic conveycr it will be understood that i do not limit myself in any sense to this particular ha i The numeral 2 designates a suitable rcceptacle which is supported by the legs 3 which may be formed of angle-bars secured to the sides of said receptacle. The receptacle 2 has the inlet 41 to which the suction pipe 5 is connecterh said pipe having' at its lower end a suitable nozzle 6 The shape and size of this nozzle 6 may vary according to the material to be conveyed.
The receptacle 2 is preferably made in the form of a hopper with the inclined bottom sheets 7, with the opening 8 communizating with the sealing chamber which is riveted or otherwise secured to the inclined wall 7 of the receptacle 2.
The sealing chai'uber 9 is normall closed by the valve or gate 10 which is adapted to swing on the hinge rod 11 and engaging; the lugs 12 on the sealing chamber 9. A spring 13 surrounds the hinge rod 11 and engages the gate 10 to hold the same normally closed.
A shaft 14: is journaled in suitable bearings 1.5 on the top 16 of the receptacle 2, said shaft carrying at its lower end the spiral conveyor llwhich is adapted to enter and lit within the sealing; chamber 9.
The upper end of the shaft 14: carries the worm. wheel 18 which is driven by the worm 1.8 on the sh aft 19. The worm shaft has the pulley wheel 20 which is connected up by the belt 21 with the pulley wheel 22 on the motor shaft 23 of the motor 24. The fan is driven by the motor shaft 23, said fan beinp; of any si'litable construction and a pipe 26 is connected up to said fan and to the receptacle 2 whereby a vacuum or partial vacuum may be maintained in said receptacle.
Baffle plates 27 are arranged within the receptacle 2 to baffle the material which enters said receptacle by the pipe 5 and prevent its escape to the pipe 26, said baffles acting to direct the material down toward the outlet 8 of said receptacle.
For the purpose of suspending the apparatus from agrain or other handling device the chains 28 may be employed con nected up to a ring 29;
When my pneumatic conveyer is in operation, the motor is started and by means of the fan 25 a partial vacuum is created in the receptacle 2 which, through the suction pipe 5 acts to draw the material to be con veyed into the nozzle 6 to be delivered by the pipe 5 into the receptacle 2. ll/laterial on enterin said receptacle is directed downwardly by the baffles 27 and accumulates in the sealing chamber 9 as well as in the receptacle 2. The spiral conveyor 17 acts to force or drive the material. down through the sealing; chamber 9 and the force imparted to the material by said spiral conveyor over comes the action of the spring 13 and the gate or valve 10 is opened whereby the material is delivered from the sealing chamher 9. The resistance offered by the spring 13 acts to prevent the discharge of the material in such quantity as to destroy the seal created by the material which fills the sealing chamber 9 at all times and prevents the destruction of the vacuum in the receptacle 2, so that the suction of the material by the pipe 5 continues without interruption and the apparatus works in a continuous manner, always discharging a uniform amount from the receptacle 2.
The full effect of the fan is obtained at 10 ceptacle forming a discharge outlet for same,
a vertically arranged spiral conveyer in said sealing chamber and forming a close ht therewith, means for driving said splrzl conveyer, and a spring-actuated valve controlling the discharge outlet of said sealing 1 chamber.
In testimony whereof, I, the said Jus'r'os A, GASTEIGER, have hereunto set my hand. JUSTUS A. \EA'KSTEIGER. Witnesses A. E. GLANEY, Boer. D. Terran.
