REAR-DECK CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1922..
Application filed February 13, 1918. Serial No. 216,853.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, ABUNDIUS GRavEL, a citizen ofthe United States, residing. at
' Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rear-Deck Constructions, of vwhich I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description. I This invention relates to improvement in the rear deck construction of motor vehicles. more particularly coupes and runabouts or roadsters', it is customary to provide a rear deck having a compartment therein for the storage of miscellaneous articles carried by the driver, which compartment is closedby a lid hinged to the rear deck and closing the opening to said compartment. The principal object of my inventlon is to provide a rear deck construction of such a nature that a joint will be made betWeen-the lidclosing the opening to said rear deck compartment and the deck so as to prevent water from running down into the compart- 25.
ment.
Further objects, and objects relating to economies of manufactureand details of construction, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the object of my inventionby the devices and 'means described in the following specification.
' A structure constituting'a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the adcompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. I is a fragmentary perspective view of therear deck of a coupe embodying my invention. v
Fig? II is a view similar to Fig. I but showing the rear lid raised and supported in raised position. a
Fig. III is a detail, sectional view taken on the line IIIIII of Fig. I, and
Fig. IV is'a detail, sectional view taken substantially on the line IV-IV of I.
In the drawing, .similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken-looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, I have shown a motor vehicle 10 having a rear deck 11 which is provided with, a storage compartment 12, which is In certain types of motor vehicles,
will be apparent that any water closed by the lid 13, the rear' ortion of said lid-being curved downwar ly to conform to the shape of. the rear deck, as clearly shown in Fig. I of the drawing.
The lid *13 is hinged to the rear deck by means of the hinges'l'which are securedv to the front edge of the lid at ;1 5:" and ivotal1y mounted on the brackets 16 which are carried by the plates 1-7 secure to the deck and disposed within the C0111- partment formed therein so that theshinges are eflectually' concealed.
therear deck and to the lid so as to. aid in supporting the lid in raised position. The frame 19 runs around the edge of the openmg in the rear deck and is provided with an inwardly extending flange 20. adjacent its lower edge. The strip 21 is secured to the inner edge of this flange, as shown in Figs. III and IV, said strip being slightly wider than the flange 20 and the lower edge of said strip being flush with the lower edge of the frame 19 so that a utter is formed by the flange 20 and the strip 21 which runs around the edge of the opening in the rear deck. Another strip 22 is secured to the upper edge of the frame 19 and extends slightly above the upper surface of the reardeck, as shown in Fig. IV, and a similarly located rubber strip 25 is secured to the upper edge of theframe 19 across the front edge of the opening. Strips 25 and 22 are i the flange 20 and the strip 21.
From the description of the parts given above, the o eration of this device should be Very rea 11y .understood. The manner .of hinging the lid with reference to the rear deck is not particularly new and forms no part of my invention, which has to do solely with the means for preventing water from running into the compartment. It which may run down the rear deck into the joint at the front of the lid will drain down into the gutter formed by the flange 20 and the The toggle links 18 areprovided, connected to the edge of illlO strip 21 and will. run down said gutter to the rearward edge of the opening where it will be directedrearwardly and will drain out without running into the compartment at all. The strips 22 and 25 form a firm sup- I port for the lid and tend to make a watercompartment formed therein and a suitably hinged lid closing said compartment, of. a
frame secured to the inner side of said rear deck adjacent to the edges of the opening of said compartment, and conforming throughout its entire length to the contour of the lid said frame being provided with an inwardly extending flange; a metallic strip secured to 'theinner edge of said flange, and projecting slightly above the upper portion of said flange, forming 'a gutter aroundthe edge of said compartment opening; and a strip secured to said frame, the upper part thereof projecting slightly above the upper surface of said deck.
2. The combination with a vehicle provided with a rear deck having a compartment therein and a lid suitably hinged and closing said compartment, of a frame ex tending around the opening of said compartment and provided with a gutter open-' ing upwardly at the forward end and sides of said frame and opening rearwardly and outwardly of the compartment at the rear end of said frame; and a strip secured to the upper part of said frame and adapted to be engaged by the lid when in closed posit-ion.
The combination with a vehicle provided with a rear deck having a compartment. therein and a suitably hinged lid closing said compartment, of a frame surrounding the opening for said compartment in said rear deck and provided with a. gutter.
at the lower edge thereof extending entirely around the opening and opening upwardly on the forward end and sides of said opening and opening rearwardly at the rear end of said opening; and a lid supporting frame secured to said deck frame and extending slightly above the surface of saiddeck.
4. The combination with a vehicle pro- I vided with a rear deck having a storage compartment therein and a lid .hinged to swing bodily, outwardly for closing said compartment; of a frame surrounding the opening of said compartment and provided witha gutter extending entirely therearound and opening upwardly at the forward end and sides of said frame and rearwardly at the rear end of said frame.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my si nature.
AJBUND'IUS GRA EL.
