Be it known that l, JAMES il.. ljU'rNliM, a citizen of the United States, residing),` at l/Vaterbury, inthe county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful improvement in intermittentfilarm Clock lviovements; and 1 do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying` drawings, and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this applicationandrepresent, in-

My invention relates to improvement in intermittent-alarm clock movements, the object being' to provide, at an almost negligible cost, `simple and reliable means for eliminating the constant clicking;- noise resulting from the riding' of the intermittent-alarm lever over the intermittent-alarm wheel and the consequent drag' upon the time-train, cha acteristic of ordinary intermittent-alarm clock movements, as now made.
lNith these ends in view,v my invention consists in the employment of a cut-out lever mounted upon the staff of the intermittentalarm lever in position to be engaged by the inwardly-turned, beveled finger at the free end of the alarm-release spring', which is operated by the movement of the alarm-cam wheel upon its staff. My invention. further consists in certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
ln carrying out my invention. as herein shown, I mount a cut-out lever 5 upon the forward end of a rock-shaft 6 journaled between the front-movement plate 'l' andthe rear-movement plate 8 of the movement. Near its rear end the said shaft 6 mounts the intermittent-al arm lever 9 formed with a long, bowed arm l() 'hei/'ingr a beveled nose l1 reacting with the teeth of the Aintermittentalarm Wheel 12, which, as shown, is mounted upon the arbor 13 of the third wheel 14 of a time-train of any approved construction and not otherwise illustrated. engaged and lifted by the beveled upper edoe of the inwardly -turned linger 15 of the` alarm-release spring,i` 16, which is secured by a rivet 17 to the front face of the` frontmovement plate, the said finger extending inwardly Vthrough a clear-ance-opening 18 in the said plate. 'The beveled upper edge of the said linger also coacts in the usual manner with the alarm-cutout wire or hammertail 19, mounted in the verge-arbor 20, also mounting` the verge 21 and the hammer-wire 22 of the hammer 23.
The said alarm-release spring: 16 is nor- Inally held in its inwardly-sprung position bymeans of the hub ffl-fl of the slidable alarmcam wheel 25, the forward face whereof mounts the alarm-cam 26, which coacts with a linger 27 upon a collet 2S mounted upon the forward end of the alarm-set shaft 29, the projecting rear end of which is furnished with a button 30.
The intermittent-alarm lever 9 is provided, as usual, with a stop-arm 31 coacting with a stop-pin 32 in the crown-wheel 33.
It will be seen from the foregoing description and the accompanying` illustrations, that the intermittent alarm mechanism shown and described is of a well-known construction except for the addition to it of the cut-out lever 5 arranged to be operated upon by the alarm-release spring" without interfering with the coaction thereof in the usual manneil with the alarm-cut-out wire or hammertai i i In the operation of my improved intermittent-alarm clock movement, the beveled upper edge of the finger 15 engages with and lifts the cut-out lever and rocks/the shaft 6, so as to lift the nose 11 of the arm 10 of the intermittent-alarm lever just above the teeth of the alarm-wheel 12, leaving' the same entirely free to normally rotate under it without contact, whereby the objectionable clicking' noise produced by the dropping ofl the nose 11 off the teeth of the wheel 12, as the same rotates under it, as well as the drag upon the time-train, is avoided. However, as soon as the alarm-train is released in the usual `manner by the dropping,V of the finger 27 of the collet 28 yinto the deep notch of the alarm-cam 26, the spring 16 springs forward and so removes its beveled finger 15 from engagement with the lever 5 and the hammer-tail 19. The nose 11 of the arm 10 of the lever 9 is then allowed to descend into operative poeition with respect to the teeth of the intermittent-alarm wheel 12, ehe-ve which the nose lll. of the arm l() is again raised as soon as the beveled Enger l5 ol1 the spring- 16 ie ilioreed inwardly under the eut-out lever 53, so as to lift the Same and rook the shaft 6, as described.
By the simple addition oit the lever 5, I am thus able, without other change, to overcome one of the objections to an intermittentalarm eloek movement of the character to which my invention relates.
I claim:
In an intermittentealarm clock-movement, the combination with the front land rear movemont-plates thereof, of an alarm-release spring Secured to the lront face of the lront movement-plate and having its free end beveled and extended rearwardly therethrough, a rock-shaft pivoted between the said front and rear movement-plates, an in* termitient-alarm lever mounted upon the said rock-:shaft at the rear end thereof, adjacent to the forward laee ol? the rear movementplate, an intermittent-alarmYwheel driven hy the timetrain and (Lo-acting with the end ofi the said lever, a verge-arbor pi voted between the said plates at a point elose to the said rook-shaft, a verge mounted upon the Said verge-arbor near the rear end thereof, a hammer-tail mounted in the Said verge-arhor in position to eo-aet with the beveled end ol the said alarm-release Spring', and an alarm eutout lever mounted upon the forward end of the Said rook-shaft at a point closely adjacent to the rear face of the Yfront movementplate in position to engage with the beveled end of the Suid spring at a point :forward et the engagement therewith oit the said hammer-tail and operating to normally hold the Said rook-shaft in position to maintain the intermittent alarm-lever out ot engagement with the intermittent alarm-Wheel.
