HARLEY '1. PEGK, OF LEBANON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE PETERS CARTRIDGE COMPANY, OF CINGIN'NATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
PRIMER FOR SMALL-ARMS AMMUNITION.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARLEY T'. PEoK, a citizen of the United States, residin at Lebanon, in-the county of \Varren and btate of Ohio, have invented certain new anduseful, Improvements in Primers for Small- Arms Ammunition, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a priming composition for ammunition and has for its object the provision of a substance of the class named which shall be of improved composition and eiiiciency.
The invention is exemplified in the composition of material described in the following specification, and it is more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A priming composition made according to has pronounced qualities of sensitiveness, freedom from' fouling in the barrel of the fire-arm, improved qualities of ignition with propellants, and i11 creased uniformity of all ballistic qualities. It Will function in a more uniform manner than priming compositions heretofore known and is more independent of variations which may exist within the primer or cartridge in which it is used. 1
In a center-fire or rim-fire primer made according to one embodiment of my invention. the combination of substances used to produce a primer of improved sensitiveness contains a sulpho-cyanate, di-plumbic di tri' nitro-resorcinol, tri-nitro-resorcinol and. an oxidizing agent. When these substances are mixed together there is a slight but complicated chemical reaction which I consider to be responsible for the improved properties described above.
The following proportions are given by way of example of a priming composition containing these substances:
5% by weight of tri-nitro-resorcinol.
5% by weight of lead sulphocyanate.
40% by weight of di-plumbic di-tri-nitroresorcinol.
50% by Weight of potassium chlorate.
The chemical formula for di-plumbic ditri -nitro -resorcinol is Pb O CI I-I (NO the use of which in a priming composition is described in my Patent No. 1,350,465, granted August 24th, 1920.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted 1 y 16 1922 Application filed July 20, 1921. Serial No. 486,224.
The'proportions of the materials may be varied' to meet different requirements. For some purposes the following proportions may be used: I
15% byweightof tri-nitro-resorcinol.
20% by weight of lead sulphocyanate.
15% by weight of di-plumbic di-tri-nitroresorcinol.
50% by weight of potassium chlorate.
Rim-fire cartridges in general require a somewhat different type of composition from center-fire, and for such cartridges an abrasive substance, such as ground glass, emery or ferro-silicon, may be added to the composition. A suitable composition for rimfire cartridges may contain 30% di-plumbic di-tri-nitro-resorcinol.
10% lead sulpho-cyanate.
10% tri-nitro-resorcinol.
20% potassium chlorate.
30% ground glass.
In place of lead sulpho-cyanate, some other suitable cyanate such as copper sulphocyanate may be substituted.
Instead of potassium chlorate another oxidizing agent such as potassium perchlorate, barium nitrate, barium peroxide or other oxidizing substances, may be used.
Instead of di-plumbic di-tri-ni'tro-resorci- .nol other suitable detonating explosives, such as mercury fulmi'nate, normal lead tri-nitroresorcinol, one of the organic diazo compounds, or some detonating nitro compound, such as tri-nitro toluene, tri-nitro nitra-anilid (pr tri-nitro methyl nitra-anilid may be use The priming compositions of the present invention may be mixed and introduced into the primer cup or rim-fire shell in the usual manners Well known to those skilledin the art.
I claim 1. A priming composition containing, trinitro-resorcinol, a sulpho-cyanate, an oxidizing agent and di-plumbic di-tri-nitro-resorcinol.
2. A priming composition containing trinitro-resorcinol, lead sulpho-cyanate,'\ an oxidizingagent and di-plumbic di-tri-nitro-resorcinol.
3. A priming composition containing trinitro-resorcinol, a sulpho-cyanate, potassium.
chiorate and di-plumbic di-tri-nitro-resorcino v 4. A priming eomposition'containing trinitro-resorcinol, lead sulpho-cyanate, potas- 5 sium chlorate and di-plumbic di-tri-nitroresorcinol.
5. A priming composition containing trinitro-resorcinol, lead sulpho-cyanate, potassium chlorate, di-plumbic di-tri-nitro-resorcinol and an abrasive substance. 10
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification onlthis fifth day of July, A. D. 1921.
- HARLEY T. PECK.
