Be it known that I, GEORGE KUNZ, formerly a subject of the Emperor of Germany, Y
but having received first papers for citizenship in the United States, and residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio,"have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gaskets for Intake Manifolds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates tocharge forming devices adapted for use in connection with internal combustion engines, and 1s primarily concerned with the provision of an improved and readily applied struc ture which is adapted to nebulize fuel gases. An object of my inventionis the provision of a device which may be positioned across the intake manifold of an engine and be employed as a gasket as well as a mixer for fuel gases. Another object is the provision of a device which' may be readily inserted in existing engines, and which possesses the characterlstlcs of simpliclty in construction,
and durability in use.
Still another object is the construction of a carbureting device, which may be adapted to receive a heating element, whereby the starting of an internal combustion engine is facilitated in cold weather.
In accomplishing the above objects, I cmby a wire screen adapted to be inserted between the intake manifold and the external wall of an engine, and to be secured thereto in such manner that the marginal edges of the device serve as a gasket. Furthermore, I provide a heating element which may be readily incorporated with the gasket to preheat the fuel gaseswhile they are passing from the carburetor to the cyl:
'inder.
The means for accomplishing the above objects will be more fully set forth in the following description which relates to the drawing, and the essential characteristics,
will be set-forth in the claims.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a section through the cylinder head and intake manifold of an internal combustion engine, embodying the-features of myinvention; Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section, of my carbureting device; Figs. 3 and 4 are elevations partlyin section, of a modified form of my invention; Fig. 5 is a section through a device equipped with a heating element.

I have found that more eificient results may be obtained in the operation of internal combustion engines by the insertion of a screen across the intake manifold of the englne. The screen functions to nebulize the fuel gases and to effect a very thorough mixture thereof, and incidentally retards the formation of carbon deposits within the cylinder. Accordingly my invention contemplates a "structure which enables such a screen to be incorporated in a gasket, so that the gasket and screen, as a unit, may be conveniently inserted within the intake manifolds of existing engines.
Referring toFig. 1 of the drawing, and designating the parts shown therein,.by the use of reference characters, 10 represents a cylinder head of an engine having an inlet port 11, and an intake manifold 12. This manifold is shown secured to the cylinder block by any convenient means, such as the post 13 and clamping bar 14..
My invention comprises a wire screen 15, preferably about #40 or #50 mesh, which screen may be shaped to conform with the gland on the intake manifold. Adjacent the screen and extending around the marginal covers the outer periphery of the gasket and screen. In the various figures, the member 17 is shown as positioned adjacent the screen,
and as having a flanged portion, as at 19, which extends to the periphery of the screen. The member 18, however, is constructed with a'fianged portion, as at 20, which overlaps the flange serves to hold the aforementioned parts together as a unit. Each member may be provided with askirt which extends outwardly from the screen and forms a snug fit with the intake manifold and the cylinder block respectively. However, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the device may also be constructed without such skirt portion extending from the members 17 and 18.
' To preheat the fuel gases, I provide a coil 21 of hi h-resistance wound around the be insulated as at 22, from the metallic parts on the member 17, and thereby of the frame. However, the coil may be wound around an insulated core and an asbestos gasket placed on each side of such coil. The leads from the heating coil may be attached in any convenient manner to the battery or other source of power, and a suitable switch, not shown, may be installed for the convenience of the operator.
Before the engine is started, current may be passed through the coil 21 'so that the area surrounding the screen is slightly heated. As the fuel gases pass this heated zone, then vaporization of such gases is greatly facilitated, whereupon the engine may be readily started in cold weather.
, From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a carbureting de vice, which comprises a gasket, that may be readily inserted in the intake manifold of existing engines, and that may be adapted to receive a heating element which effectively heats a zone, adjacent the nebulizer, and thereby facilitates the starting of the engine.

1. In combination an intake manifold, a screen extending transversely thereof, a packing ring extending around the mar ginal edge of the screen, and means for securing the ring to the screen, said means being adapted to be inserted across the intake manifold in an internal combustion engine.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a screen of a member extending around the marginal edges of one side of the screen, and another member extending around the marginal edges on the other side of the screen, one of said members overlapping the other of said members" 3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a screen with a housing therefor, said housing comprising a member secured to each side of the screen, and a packing ring xtending around the marginal edge of the screen and adapted to be held thereagainst by said members.
4:. In combination, a' screen, a packing ring associated with the screen, a member extending along the marginal edges of one side of the screen, another member extending along the marginal edges of the other side of the screen and overlapping the first mentioned member.
5. An intake manifold gasket comprising a screen, a flanged member associated with said screen, another flanged member overlapping said first mentioned member, and a packing ring intermediate the screen and one of said members.

10. In a device of the class described, the combination with a screen, of an asbestos ring extending around the marginal edges thereof, an electric heating element adjacent the ring and insulated from the screen, a housing member extending around the marginal edges of one side of the screen, and another housing member overlapping said first mentioned member and adapted to retain said gasket adjacent the screen.
11. In a device of the class described, the combination with a screen of a packing ring extending around the marginal edge of the screen, an electric heating element surrounding the ring, a houslng covering the parts mentioned and adapted to act as a gasket,
and insulation between the heating element and housing.
