Be it known that l, WALTER S. FmMANDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ice-Cream Freezers, of which the following is a specification,
' reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to anv improvement in ice cream freezers. One object of the invention is to provide a power driven ice cream freezer in combination with a cabinet having a cover, and means whereby when the cover is closed it will automatically start the freezer and when the cover is open it will automatically stop the operation of the freezer. Another object of the invention is to provide the freezer with a cabinet which entirely covers and pro-tects all of the mechanism during the operation of the freezer. Other features of the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims. l
The invention will be fully understood from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel fea-tures thereof will be pointed out and clearly defined in the claims at the close of this specification.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a freezer embodying the invention, showing the cover closed and the parts in operative position for driving the freezer.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the cover turned up on its hinge, the hinged top of the cabinet being closed.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation partly broken away of the parts shown in Figure 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail View of the contact mechanism.
Fig. 5 shows a modification of the means for starting 'and stopping the machine.
Referring now to the drawings, 1'is the tub of an ice cream freezer which is mounted in a cabinet case 2, preferably metal, having a base 3 and legs 4. It is to be noted that the base 3 has an extension 5 on one side to counterbalance the weight of the cover when the cover is turned back on its hinge, asl will be hereinafter described.
The freezer and case are provided with guides to maintain the freezer tub 1 in proper position-within the case. Any suitable guldes ma;7 be provided. As shown in Specification of Letters Patent.

the drawings, one side of the freezer tub is provided with angle irons 6 secured to the sides thereof, each having a downwardly extending pin 7 which engages a hole in the ange 8 of an annular angle iron secured to the inner periphery of the case 2. Any suitable guide, however, may be employed in lieu of the form above described.
` The case extends slightly above the top of the tub and is provided with a top l1 hinged at 12 to the top of the case, so that said top 11 may be swung open, as shown in Figure 2. Said hinged top is provided with a spring catch 13 which, when said top is closed, engages with a projection on the side of the case opposite the hinge to hold the top in closed position.
A yielding member 15 is provided on the under side of said hinged top 11 which engages the top of the freezer when the said top is closed to maintaina yielding pressure on the freezer. This member 15 is preferably a pad of suitable compressible material. The paddle shaft 16 of the freezer has suitable gear connection with the counter shaft 17, said gear connection shown consisting of a beveled gear 18 on the shaft 16 engaging with a beveled gear 19 on the counter shaft 17. Said counter shaft 17 carries a spur gear 20 which projects up through a slot 21 in the hinged top member 11.
Mounted on the upper side of said hinged top 11 isan electric motor 22 having a shaft 23 provided with a pinion 24 which meshes with th'e gear 20 on the counter shaft 17. Said motor shaft 23 isdriven in the wellknown manner by an electric motor. As shown in the drawings, the current of the motor is introduced by means of an electric cable 25 through an insulated bushing 26 mounted on a metallic bracket 27 secured to the upper side of said hinged top' 11; thence the current passes through the wires 28 and 29 to the positive and negative poles of a switch within a box 30 mounted fast on the hinged top 11. The wire 29 lea-ds to the contact member 31 within said box and the wire 28 is connected with the binding post 32 in the box with which is connected an armature spring 33 carrying a contact member 34.
A cover 35 is hinged at 36 to the hinged top 11, said cover 35 having preferably an 4arched top, as shown, and fiat parallel the top is a strike member 38 which is shown as being in the form of an angle iron and which, when the top 11 is closed, is engaged by the lower end of the contact member 34, and the spring 33 yields to allow the contact member 34 to be forced up into engagement with the contact member 31, thus closing thc circuit and starting the motor. When said hinged top 11 is, thrown open, the spring33 opens the contact automatically and stops the motor. The cover is provided with spring catches 39 which engage with projections 40 on the case to hold it closed, but the spring catches will readily yield to be disengaged whenever it is desired to turn the cover back on its hinge. Thehinged top 11 isprovided with a handle 41 for convenience in turning it back on its hinge to o-pen it, and
in so doing, it will also carry with it the cover 35. If desired, the cover 35 can be turned back independently of the hinged top 11. v
In order to conveniently hold the cover and top 11 in their open position, there vis provided a bar 42 pivoted at 43 to the side of the top 11, Aand said bar is provided near its lower end with a series of notches 44.
which are adapted to engage with a pin -45 which projects fromthe side of the case so that the top 11 and the cover 35 may be maintained in such open position as desired by engaging one of the notches of the said bar 42 with the said pin 45.
The hinged cover 35 maybe opened and closed independently of the hinged top 11,.
but if when the cover 35 is in closed position, the top 1l is opened, it will carry with it the hinged cover, so that only, one action is required to open them both and stop the motor.
In the modification shown in Figure 5, there is shown a construction whereby instead of having the electrical contact made .to start the motor by closing the hinged top 11, the'contact is made only by closing the hinged outer cover 35. In the form of construction previously described, the motor will be started if the hinged top 1l is closed, even if the hinged cover 35 is left open.
This will leave exposed the motor and the portions of the mechanism mounted on topof the hinged top` 11 while the machine is running. It may be deemed desirable, therefore, `by some users of the machine to have the machine operated only when the top cover 35 is closed. In Fi re 5, there is showna construction where y the contact'is made and broken by the opening and closin of the cover 35 irrespective of the hinge top 11 still being closed. In this form of construction there is mounted on the hinged cover 35 a lug 46 which, when the said cover is closed, presses down on the contact member 34 which, in this case, is in inverted position from that shown in Figure4, and
closes the switch'to make the circuit. When designation in the particular description of the two members. As a matter of fact each one of them is a cover, the member 35 merely serving as a supplementary cover, and as already pointed out, the arrangement of the contact member may be such that the electrical contact fo-r starting the machine may be made by closing the hinged member 11 or it may be so arrangedy that the electrical contact is made by closing the hinged member 35. I regard both of these forms of construction and arrangement as coming 4within the scope of the invention, and whereever applicable in the claims the use of the term cover is intended broadly to include either the hinged member 1l or the hinged member 35, or any other form of movable top closing member, as I believe that I am the first to devise a freezer having a motor which is automaticallystarted by closing a top or cover member and which is automatically stopped by opening the top or cover member.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a rotary work shaft," a mount for said work shaft, a hinged lid above said shaft, an electric motor mounted on said lid, means whereby when said lid is closedy said motor makes driving connection with said work shaft, an electric circuit for energizing said motor, and contact mechanism which is broken by the opening of said lid and closed by the closing of sa1d lid.
2. In combination withk a rotary work shaft, a countershaft having driving connection therewith, a mount for said work shaft, a lid hinged to said mount above said shaft,an electric motor mounted on said lid having a shaft driven thereby, means whereby when said lid is closed said motor shaft makes driving connection with said countershaft, an electric circuit for energizing said motor, and contact mechanism mounted in said lid and closed by the closing of saidlid.
3.- In combination with a rotary work shaft, a casing therefor having a hinged lid,- anv electric motor mounted on said hinged lid, driving connection between said motor and said work shaft, means mounted inthe lid whereby the closing of the said hinged lid closes the electric circuit which starts the motor, said circuit being broken by the opening of the lid.
4. In combination with a rotary work shaft, a countershaft having driving connection' with said work shaft, a gear mounted on said eountershaft, a casmgm which said Work shaft is mounted, a lid hinged to said casing, an electric motor mounted on said lid having a shaft driven thereby, a gear mounted on said motor shaft which when the said lid is closed makes driving connection with the gear on said countershaft and Which is disengaged when the lid is opened, and con tact mechanism mounted in said lid Which is closed by the closing of the lid to start the motor, and Which is opened to stop the motor when the lid is opened.
5. In combination with a rotary Work shaft, acountershaft having driving connection With said Work shaft, a casing in which said Work shaft is mounted, a lid hinged to said casing, an electric motor mounted on said lid having a shaft driven thereby,l Contact mechanism mounted in said lid which is closed by the closing of the lid to start the motor and which is opened thereby stopping the motor when the lid is opened, and driving connection between said motor shaft and said countershaft Which is rendered operative to drive the countershaft When the said lid is closed, and which is disengaged from driving connection with the motor shaft when the lid is opened.
