Be it known that I, THOMAS ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doorway Controls or Gates for use in Railway Cars, of
' which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in doorway controls or gates for use in railway cars, such as cars used on city lines and interuban routes, these controls or gates being adjustable to permit the passengers to enter or to exit at a doorway remote from the one man or personoperating the car.
To these ends the invention consists, essentially, of uprights carrying brackets provided with arms or guards held in normal positionby spring devices which yield and permit the arms to swing open and. return to closed position or to swing in'- ward and'return to such position, and of an adjustable sleeve having stops for controlling the position of the arms, whether such as to permit passengers to pass out ward from the car or inward onto the car.

-These gates or controls are located near the doorway of the car, say on the platform near the steps. This part of the platform is indicated at l in Fig. 1, with sockets 2 to receive the uprights 3, which are preferably in the form of tubes or pipes over which are fitted sleeves 4, with filling blocks 5 between the upright or post 3 and the sleeve, collars 6 secured by pins 7 or otherwise on the upright serving to sustain the sleeves.
On the uprights 3 I mount a series of arms 8 in the nature of bars of wood whose ends fit within brackets 9, as shown particularly in F ig. 2. "These bracketsy are mounted on the uprights 8 andhave lugs 10 through which extend springs ll, preferably in the nature of coiled springs,
which extend also through the upright 33 cated in each of the brackets which respectively carry the several arms 8. It will'beseen'that the arms may swing inward for the admission ;of passengers, as indicated in Fig. 4, or may swing outward-forthe exit of passengersas' illustrated in Fig. 5b
Stops for positioning the arms and for limiting their movements are provided and constructed after this wise. About each upright 3 is placed the long sleeve 4, be-

The sleeves are adjustable to the position shown in Fig. 4, which will permit the arms to swing inward-for the entrance of. passengers, orto theposition shown in Fig. 5 which will permit the arms to swing outward for the exit of passengers. For so adjusting the sleeves they are provided with crank arms 14, as seen more clearly in Fig. 4. These crank arms are interconnected by a pitman 15, whilean actuating rod 16 is employed to enable the motorman or man in charge of the car to adjust the arms'l4 and therefore the sleeves 4 to either the position shown in Fig. 4, in which the arms will open inward for the entrance of passengers," or

It will. be seen that my improved controls or gates operate equally well for the admission of passengers, as for their exit, and thatthey also likewise operate to prevent the exit and entrance of passengers until the proper adjustment has been made to that end.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combinatiom'with a car doorway,
of a doorwayeontrol comprising members andstops therefor, the members being adapted to swing apart as passengers pass in one direction, and to oppose the entrance of passengers in the other direction, and mechanism to adjust said control members to po- SlillOllS CO permit passengers to exit or enter. 2.
