MEASURING DEVICE.
Application filed September 9 1921. Serial No. 499,400.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. NU'rmNo, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Gervais, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to a combined measure and tunnel for use in supplying oil in measured quantities to automobiles, for instance within the crank case and my object is the provision of a measuring device of funnel shape having an upper measuring compartment with a valve at the base of the compartment of a nature which when open provides for a quick flow of oil downwardly through the spout, this valve being of such a nature that it may be readily reached for repairand substitution of parts in case this becomes necessary by simply detaching the lower from the upper part of the device.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates my present invention and forms a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the device constituting my invention, 7
Figure 2 is a detail side view of the lower part detached from the upper part,
Figure 3 is a top plan view, and
Figure 4: is a detail perspective view of the valve and its connections.
Referring now to these figures my inventlon proposes a measuring device of funnel shape in which the lower portion or spout 10 is detachably connected to the lower smaller end of the upper part 11 the latter of which forms a measuring chamber and may have internal graduations 12. The upper part or body of the device is also provided with an upper curved bail or handle 13 and its top iscpartially closed by a plate 14 having an opening in line with the axis of the body to receive the upper end of a valve controlling connection 15, for instance a wire whose upper end above the plate 14 has a ring 15 immediately below the handle 18.
To provide for the detachable connection of the spout 10 to the body 11 the latter is internally threaded at its lower smaller end to receive a reduced threaded nipple 16 of the spout 11 and the upper edge of which nipple in the connected position forms an Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A111.
annular valve seat within the lower end of the body 11 on which a fiat valvei17 sits with its washer 18. This valve is connected to the upper end of a stem 19 and is provided with diametrically opposed and upstanding cars 20 receiving through their apertures the lower outturned ends of an inverted U- shaped lift 21 centrally of which the lower end of the valve manipulating wire 15 is connected. I
The nipple 16 has depending arms 22 sup-, porting a lower apertured stem guide 23 through which the stem 19 passes, the upper end of thisstem 19 being threaded as shown at 24 and screwing into and through the valve 17 while its lower end has a head 25,
preferably slotted crosswise as at 26 to receive a screw driver. Against this head rests the lower end of a spring 27 coiled around the lower portion of the stem 19 with its upper end bearingagainst the stem guide I 23 and as this stem projects downwardly into the spout 10 it is under normal circumstances merely necessary to insert a screw driver within the spout to engage the head 25 of the stem 19 and rotate the latter in order to adjust the tension of the spring. 7
In order to reach the valve it is simply necessary to unscrew the spout and it is quite obvious from the foregoin that the construction I propose not only brings about these advantages with respect to ready accessibility of the parts, but also provides for V it two parts of which the upper part isinter nally threaded at its lower smaller end, a
handle on the upper part,- an externally threaded nipple atthe upper larger end of the lo-wer part engaging the "threads of the' upper part, and the upper end of which nipple forms avalve seat within the upper part, a valve on said seat having a stem project-- ing through the nipple and adjustable with respect to the valve, said stem having a lower head, a'spring around the stem between its said head and portion of the nipple to normally hold the valve on its seat, and a valve manipulating connection extending vertically in the upper part to a point adjacent to the said handle thereof.
2. A funnel shaped measuring device having an upper handle and an internal member intermediate the ends thereof forming an annular valve seat, a flat valve seated clownivardly on said seat, a stem depending through the seat forming member and having its upper end threaded in connection with the valve and having at its lower end a slotted head accessible through the lovver end of the funnel, a spring coiled around the stem between the saidfhead and a portion of the said seat forming member, a valve manipulating connection leading upwardly from the valve, and a guide adjacent to the said handle for the said valve manipulating connection.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
