This improved permutation lock is provided with a housing 1 which will be secured to the door .2 by securing screws 3 and is providedwith a tubular neck extension 4: which extends through the door as shown in Fig. 2. A cover plate 5 is provided for this housing 1 and is removably held in place'by securing screws which pass through openings formed in the cover and are screwed into threaded sockets 6 and 7 formed in the housing. The cover plate 5 is provided with a socket extension 8 which will be positioned in alinement with the neck extension 4 when the cover plate is connected wit-h the housing 1 and will receive one end portion of the hollow shaft 9 upon the outer end of which will be secured a head 10 by means of which the shaft may be easily rotated.
The hollow shaft 9 forms a portion of the permutation mechanism disclosed in i Fig. 11 and when in place has its head 10 seated in the head 11 of the dial 12. This dial 12 fits into the cup 13 which is secured to the outer face of the door by securing screws 14 covered by the dial 12. A sleeve 15 extends inwardly from this dial into the neck 4 of the housing 1 and is providedat its inner end with spaced arms 16 between which will fit the spared 17 which extend from the hollow neck 18 of the permutation tumbler 19. It will thus be seen that when the arms 16 are positioned between the arms 17, there will be provided a hollow shaft .between the dial 12 and the tumbler 19. Other tumblers 20 and 21 fit about the hollow shaft between the tumbler 19 and dial 12 and will be positioned in the housing 1 and be rotatably mounted and held in the proper spaced relation by means of clamps 22'one of which is shown in perspective in Fig. 12. These clamps are pivotally mounted by fasteners 23 which pass through the openings 24 and after being swung into the clamping position shown.

The bolt 33 is slidably mounted in the housing for moving outwardly through a cut out in the end wall of the housing between the blocks 34 which in addition to I serving as guides for the bolt, provide supports so that a cross bridge 35 may be secured across the bolt and held in place by securing screws which extend through openings in the bridge and are screwed into threaded openings 34' formed in the blocks 84. By this arrangement, the bolt 33 will be slidably held in place and may not move out of the proper position. This bolt 33 is hollow thus providing a chamber 36 in which a core 37 will be slidably mounted and yieldably held against sliding movement by means of a clutch consisting of spring 38 positioned in a passage 39 "of the core and gripping balls to pressed outwardly by the spring 38 and thus held in firm engagement with the walls of the pocket. An opening 35 is formed in the bridge for registering with an opening 41 in the bolt and permitting the bolt to be securely locked by means of latch mechanism to be hereinafter described. This bolt 33 is provided wit- h side arms 12 and 4?). one of which is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 44 to -receive a securing screw 45 and the second of which is provided with a depending finger 4:6 for fitting into a groove 47 formed in a rib t? upon the bottom of the housing. lVhen the lock is in use, it is desired to have the bolt slide longitudinally and in order to do so, t iere has been provided an eccentric ring 48 which is mounted upon the tubular shaft 9 within a circular band 4L9 from which extends an ear 19 loosely connected with the core 37. The cup 13 can then be secured to the door and after the cup is in place, the dial put in place with the hollow shaft section carried by the dial extending inwardly with its arms extending between the arms 17. The block will however prevent the arm 13 from passing through the bracket which holds the block in place and therefore the bolt cannot move inwardly to the inoperative position. Therefore, there will be no danger of the lock being broken by forced turning of the shaft- 9 with the con1- bination scattered. in order to set the combination. the dial is turned first in one direction and then in another until the turnblers have been moved to bring the notches into alinement so that the spring can move the block to bring the passage 57 into registry with the cutout 60 and permit free passage of the arm In the present illustration, the dial will first be turned to the right by means of the knob 11 until the member 35 is in position with respect to the mark 83 upon the cup'13. The dial will then be rotated in the opposite direction for two revolutions to bring the number 1 1 into proper position with respect to the mark 83. After the disks 21 and 20 have been set, the dial will again be turned toward the right or in other words in the first direction of movement and brought to a stop at the mark 29 in which position all of the notches of the disks will be in alinement and the block 55 may move to the position of Fig. 4. With the block in this position, the arm 43 may pass through the notch 57 The head of knob 10 can then be turned to rotate the shaft 9 and the bolt 33 will be drawn inwardly and thus permit the door to be opened. The combination can then be left .in the set position so that the bolt can be moved inwardly or outwardly at will or the bolt can be moved outwardly and the combination scattered so that it will be locked in the extended position. If this is done, the plate 67 will be moved to the open posit-ion and the door can be opened or closed as long as the plate is secured in the open position. If during the day, it is desired to positively lock the door from the inside and prevent anyone from opening it from the outside, the door may be closed and the plate released so that it may move to the closed position. The locking pin 61 which would ordinarily be held in a raised or inoperative position will be-turned so that it may move to a looking position and will extend down into the opening of the bolt 33 thus preventing anyone from drawing the bolt. inwardly to the inoperative position even with the combination set. hen leaving theroom and it is desired to have the door locked, the plate will be moved to the position shown in Fig. 7 with the tongue 82 engaging the edge of the plate. The door can then beclosed and when the extended bolt strikes the plate 80, the tongue will be moved inwardly out of engagement with the plate 67 and the spring 72 will move the plate to the closed position thus preventing opening of the door until the combination is again set to draw the bolt inwardly to the inoperative position. It will thus be seen that there has been provided a lock which can be securely locked and which is so constructed that the permutation locking mechanism cannot be broken by turning of the head 10 with the combination scattered. It will be further noted that a lock has been provided which is so constructed that the bolt may be very securely held in a locked position but very. easily moved to an inoperative position with the proper combination set. It will be fun they noted that there has been provided a very efficient permutation mechanism for releasably holding the bolt in a locked position and also that there has been provided means which will permit of the bolt being locked against movement to an inoperative position even with the combination set. This latching mechanism would be very effective in locking the door against intruders where the occupant of the room did not have time to scatter the combination. It will be further noted that there has been provided an improved type of socket for use in connection with the lock, the socket being provided with mechanism depending for its operation by co-operation with the bolt of the lock mounted upon the door.
I claim:
1. A look comprising a door engaging housing, a jamb engaging socket including a wall section movable to an open position and yieldably held in a closed position, jlatch means for releasably-holding the'wallfseotion in an open position, a boltcarrie d bythe door engaging housing and movable into and out of an operative position, means for across and rendering the first mentioned latch means inoperative.
3. A lock comprising a door jamb engaging socket having a wall section slidably mounted for movement into and out of a closed position, resilient means yieldably holding h the Wall section in a closed position, latching means within the socket yieldably held in position to engage the Wall section and hold the same in an open position, a door engag ing housing, a bolt movable into and out of the housing, locking means in the housing for locking the plunger in an extended position for entering said socket when a' door is closed 7 and engaging the latching means therein to move the same and release the wall section to perrnitthc wall section to move to a closed position and prevent movement of the bolt out of the socket while lockedin an extended position, and additional means forlocking the wall section in an open position and preventing its movement to a closed'position, the last mentioned locking means further serving as means for locking the wall section in a closed position. 4. A lock comprising a housing. a bolt carried by the housing for sliding movement into and out of an operativeextended position, a core slidably mounted in the bolt and having frictional binding engagement with the bolt. operating means having connection with said core for moving the core and thereby imparting movement to the bolt, and means for locking the bolt in an extended position,the core being permitted of movement when the bolt is locked.
5. A lock comprising a housing, a bolt slidably carried by the housing for movement into and out of anoperative position, means for releasably locking the bolt in an operative positioma core slidab'ly mounted in the bolt and having frictional engagement with the bolt permitting movement of the core independent of the bolt when the plunger is locked in an operative position,
