Be it known that I, BERT SELBY, acitizen of the- United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Means for Applying Paste or the like to Paper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to means for applying a liquid paste to paper, and the broad combination of the means for applying said paste to the paper is shown in the prior Patents No. 1,337,729 and No. 1,358,026, issued April 20, 1920, and November 9, 1920, respectively.
The chief object of the present invention is to construct the pasting machine of a minimum number of parts and arranged so that the various parts may be readily removed from the operative to an inoperative position to permit the ready threading of the paper through and upon said parts.
One feature of the invention is in providing means. which automatically maintain the rotary paste applying means in the liquid paste to a predetermined depth.
Another feature of the invention is in constructing the parts thereof such that paper of different thicknesses and widths can be accommodated with equal facility.
A further feature of the invention consists in providing the pasting mechanism with detachable end frames and detachably securing to said mechanism a table, whereby said assembled mechanism supporting means and table may be readily detached so that the same can be transported in a knockdown condition.
A further feature of the invention is in providing adjustable cutting means for trimming or stripping the paper, and in providing said cutting means with adjust- I able means whereby paper of different thicknesses may be cut with equal facility. Fig. 5 is a central sectional view of a paper .roll supporting means and illustrates the means for readily renewing the paper stock, Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view of the paste applying, paste regulating and cutting or stripping and trimming means, said parts being shown in the operative position. Fig. 7 is a similar view of the same parts shown in Fig. 6 showing said parts in the inoperative position. Fig. 8 is an enlarged side view of a modified form of handle for the paste receptacle. Fig. 9 is a view of the several detachable parts of the invention in detachable relation. 10 is a cross sectional view of a modified form of the invention.
This invention is an improvement upon the inventions shown in the prior Patents No. 1,337,729 and No.1,358,026"previously referred to, said applications disclosing the broad combination of a housing for the paste. receptacle, a rotary paste applying means, a paper roller supported adjacent thereto, a paper supporting roller supported in relation to said paste applying rotary means, excess paste removing means associated with said paper supporting roller and cutting and trimming means. The present invention includes these same means with the additions hereinbefore noted, which will be hereinafter described in detail.
In the drawings there is shown a substantially rectangular housing 10 or receptacle,
said housin or receptacle being adapted to contain a fluid which may be maintained at any desired temperature by an suitable means, one of which is shown in t 1e Patent No. 1,337,729, and which is herein illustrated in Fig. 10 as a modified form of the present invention. In said figure, 221 indicates a receiving, socket member for renrovably supporting a heater 224 and a housing 222 therefor, said housing having a flanged rim 222 engageable by the socket member and provided with the air admitting openings 223. The aforesaid construction constitutes no part of the invention, but is herein illustrated for clearance Upon each end of said housing is detachably secured a supporting side frame 11, said frame or leg being preferably secured by means of wing nuts 12 upon the bolts 13 suitably secured to and extending outwardly from the housing 10. Fig. 9 illustrates the detachable legs 11, table 16 and housing 10 in the detachable relationship. Upon one of the elongated sides of the housing 10 is suitablysecured a plurality of supporting bracket members 14, said bracket members each being provided with an opening 15 extending substantially vertically therethrough. Thetable 16 of the usual construction is provided at one end with a cantilever block means 17. The means 17 comprise a table securing portion and an arcuately formed supporting portion 18, upon the other end of which is secured or formed a depending pin or bolt member 19, said pin being seatable in the recess or opening 15 in the supporting bracket 14.
In thespace formed by the arcuate portion 18 between the table 16 and the housing 10, is positioned the paper supporting means. Said means includes a pair of bracket members 20 which are suitably secured to the housing 10 at each end thereof and extending outwardly from the same adjacent the table, when the latter is in the assembled position. Said brackets 20 are provided with up turned ends, said ends being suitably formed to permit ready engagement and disengagement of thepaper supporting means sup-' ported thereb The present embodiment of this means comprises a shaft 21 upon which are secured two parallel disks or roll holding guide plates 22 and 23. The plate 22 is provided with a hub portion 24, said hub portion securing said plate to said shaft in-any desired position by means of the thumb screw 25.
The hub 24 is provided with a cylindrical opening 114 through which the shaft 21 extends. Between said shaft and hub is slidably secured, 'by means of thepin 115 in the hub 24 and the enclosed spring 116, a cone member or sleeve 117 provided with a longitudinal slot 118 in which the pin 115 extends, whereby the entire structure Will roeaser tate with the shaft 21, yet be adjustable thereon as well as have a yielding engagement with the paper roll. Outward movement of "the cone member 117'is limited by the plate 22 being provided with a restricted shaft opening.
Surrounding the shaft 21 is a similar sleeve or'cone member 123 upon the forward end of which is formed the conical bearing 124. The sleeve portion 123 is provided with a similar longitudinal slot 125. The plate 23 is provided with an elongated hub portion 26, the latter being concentric with the sleeve 123 and being further provided with a longitudinally extending slot 29 registering with the slot 125. The plate 23 has'a reduced opening 126 into which the conical bearing 124 extends. Concentric with the shaft 21 and slidable thereon is a bearing'member 28,-
said member having an elongated reduced portion 129 spaced from the shaft 21 to form a cylindrical channel 130 and providedwith a threaded exterior 29. An elongated sleeve 30 is provided with a threaded end whereby the same is secured to the member 28. The sleeve 30 is concentric with the hub portions 26 and 123 and is slidable longitudinally thereof. Means for securing the sleeves and hub portions in non-rotatable relation comprises a pin member 31 secured to said sleeve member '30 and extending into the registering slots 29 and 125. In the cylindrical channels or chambers 32 and 130 formed between the sleeve 30 and the sleeve 123 and the sleeve portion 129 and the shaft 21, are spring members 33 and 131, one end thereof abutting the member 28 and the other end thereof engaging the enclosed ends of the hub 26 and sleeve 123.
With the foregoing means the plates 22 and 23 are yieldingly held in engagement with the paper roll supported upon the shaft 21, whereby the paper taken from said roll may be guided and maintained in any given position. In the present instance one of the upright supporting brackets 20 is slotted, as shown at 34, to provide an open bearing for the shaft 21. The other upright bracket 20 is also slotted, but does not form an open bearing since there is provided a retaining portion 35, said retaining portion being provided with a tapered or inclined face 36, whereby the shaft 21 may be removed upwardly over the bearing 34. When thus removed, the nut 37 upon the outwardly extending end .of the shaft 21 limits the movement of said shaft in the closed bearing 35.-

the members 28, 30, 123, 26 and plate 23 are slid longitudinally of the shaft 21 and removed therefrom. The paper roll is then mounted upon said shaft in the adjusted position, said position being determined by adjusting the guide or disk plate 22 by means aerate? a er the thumb screw 28. The members're moved from the shaft 21 are then replaced and the shaft lowered into position in the bearing 34. To revent longitudinal movement of said shaft in the bearings 34 and 35, the collar member 38 is suitably secured to the shaft 21, as by means of a pin 39. The collar thus revents the shaft 21 from sliding longitu inally ofsaid bearings and dropping out of the bearing 34.
The paste applying mechanism, regulating and trimming means, are supported upon the housing 10 by means of a plurality of brackets 40, said brackets rotatably supporting a rock shaft 41 upon which in turn is secured a paper supporting roll, a surplus paste removing means, auxiliary paste retaining means, and the trimming means. The housing 10 also supports the paste applying rotary means or roller 42 within t e liquid paste container 43. In the present instance the paste applying roller is adjustably supported Within the housing 10 by means of the vertical rod 44 adjustably secured upon the housing 10, said rod supportin one end of a transverse overhanging mem er 45, see Figs. 2 and 3, the other end thereof being secured to the depending roller bearing supporting member 46. The particular method of supporting these means upon said housing member is shown clearl in Fig. 4 of the Patent No. 1,358,026 and also in Fig. 10. The vertical rod 44, Fig. 2, is slidable in a bracket 118 having an opening 118 therethrough. The bracket 118 is suitably secured to the housing 10. The set screw 119 rigidly secures the vertical rod 44 in adjusted position in said bracket. The bracket 118 is shown extended downwardly as at 120. This downward extension terminates in the transverse heater supporting extension 221 hereinbefore described. This heater supporting ex tension is suitably secured by the housing 10. Also shown herein is a drain-cock 125, by which the housing 10 may be drained or the liquid level lowered as desired. The bearing supporting member 46 is suitably secured to the bearing block 47, said bearing block being provided with a ball race 49 slidably secured in the slot 48 in which is seated a ball race 49 rotatably supporting the shaft 50, to which is secured the rotary paste applying means 42, the same being herein shown in the form of a cylinder. As shown in Fig. 3 when the parts above said rotary pasting means are removed to an inoperative position, said asting means and the bearing 48 may be readily removed from the paste receptacle 43. To permit ready removal of the paste receptacle 43 from the housing 10, collapsible handle means are provided. In Fig. 3 the handle 140 is pivotally supported by the plvot forming bracket means 141. In Fig. 8 the preferred form of'hanclle means includes a rod142 slidably supported by suitable eyelet means 143, the ends of said rod 144 being angularly positioned-to engage said eyelet means 143 to limit the outward move- '10 ment of the rod. The middle portion 145 forms the handle portion. With this construction the handle is collapsible with respect to the receptacle and is positioned so 7 as to be clear of the paste.
The means for automatically maintaining the rotary paste applying means 42 to a constant and predetermined depth in the paste comprises suitable bracket means 51 secured to said paste containing receptacle and eX tending outwardly therefrom. At each end of the housing member 10, which in the present instance'is adapted to contain a heating fluid 52, there is positioned a tubular supporting guiding means 53. Secured within said tubular guide member is a support ing spring member 54, said spring member having its upper end seatable in a cup portion 55 formed upon, or suitably secured to, the outwardly extending bracket 51. The tgbular guide 53 is provided with an elongated slot 56 in which the bracket 51 is slidable longitudinally. As shown in Fig. 3 the slot 56 preferably terminates above the level of the heating liquid 52 so that said liquid does not have access to said tubular guide 53. As the paste 57 is removed from the paste receptacle 43 by the paste applying roller' 42, the resultant weight of said paste and said receptacle 106) decreases, whereupon, due to the buoyant action of the heating liquid 52 and the supporting action of the spring member 54, said receptacle will be moved upwardly in said housing and with relation to said rotary paste applying means. By adjusting the tension of the spring 54, by means of the threaded bolt 58, accessible through the opening 59 formed in the housing 10 and registering with the tubular guide 53, up- 119 ward movement of said paste receptacle 43 may be such that the paste applying roller 42 will always automatically be maintained at a predetermined level within the liquid paste, said predetermined level being secured by means of adjusting the bracket 45 with relation to the housing 10 by the means shown in the patent hereinbefore mentioned. Between the brackets 40 is positioned an auxiliary pasting plate 150, said plate hair- 12@ ing an upwardly curved portion 151 and a guard level ridge thereon 152. The plate 150 is suitably secured upon the rock shaft 41 and loosely rests thereon, the end of said plate being curled at 153 about said shaft as shown in Fig. 7. Between the curled portion 153 and the ridge 152 are suitable paste discharging openings or apertures 154. In the present instance the paste plate loosely rests upon the paste supporting roller 13(1) 42 and collects the astefrom the same to maintain a ocket o paste 155 adjacent the roller 61, w ereby the paper 62'w1ll receive 1 paste from said Ipocket when the machine is 5 operated, since t e aste roller 42 will sometimes be unsupplie with paste upon the approachin periphery for approximately one half of t e circumference. Thus the waste due to unpasted paper is reduced. The holes 154 serve to return the excess paste collected by the plate to the paste receptacle 42.
Positioned abovethe rotary paste applying means 42 are the papersupporting roller, the auxiliary pasting means, the excess paste removing means, and the trimming and cutting means, sald means being supported upon said housing 10 b means of the bracket members 40and t e rock shaft 41. Upon the rock shaft 41 are secured a pair of angularly formed levers 60. Between said levers is rotatably mounted, and in the present instance at the center of the angle of said levers, a paper supporting roller 61, said roller, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6, resting upon the paste applying roller 42, with the paper 62 interposed therebetween. The paper 62 is adapted to pass around the roller 61, the excess paste applied by the roller 42 being removed from said paper by means of brush or scraping means 63 extending longitudinally of the roller 61.
In the present instance the trimming and cutting means are directly associated with the paper supportin roller 61, the levers 60 upon the upper an free end thereof supporting a transverse shaft or rod 64. The rod 64 carries a plurality of, and in the present instance three, supporting lugs 65, said lugs having a projecting portion 66 and a bearing portion 67. The lugs 65 are slidable longitudinally upon the shaft or rod 64 and are secured to said rod in the adjusted position by suitable means, such asthumb screws 68. The circular cutting wheel, disk or 45 knife 69 is rotatably supported in an arm 70, said arm being pivotally supported at 71 in the bearing portion of the lug 65. The arm is herein shown slotted at 72, between the sides of which is positioned the circular.
cutting disk69. The arm 70 is provided with an opening or slot 73 through which loosely extends a bolt 74, said bolt having a threaded engagement with the project-ing end portion 66 of the lugs 65. The other end of said bolt is provided with a thumb engaging head portion 75, whereby said bolt may be adjusted upon the projecting portion 66, said head portion 75 further securing a spring member 76 between it and the pivoted arm 70 for normally'maintaining said arm in engagement with the paper" to cut the same. The tension or bearing of each of the circular knives 69 can thus be regulated to the several kinds of paper to which paste is being applied. In the present instance three cutting knives are Show 166 sitioned upon the rock shaft 64, but it will be understood that any desired number may be positioned thereon. Likewise in the pres- As shown in Figs. 4, 6 and 7 the cutting rolls or disks may be removed from engagement with the paper roll by being rocked with the shaft 64, or said cutting and paper roll may be removed from the operative position, shown in 6, to the inoperative posit-ion, shown in ig. 7, by rocking the shaft 41. The means for rockin the cutting roll or disk into operative position adjacent the paper supporting roll comprises a spring arm or latch member 78, suitably secured to the shaft 64 by means of a key 79, said latch member having a latching end 80 adapted to engage suitable means formed upon the lever 60, whereby the cutting knives may be positioned adjacent the paper supporting roll.
With the foregoing construction the customary auxiliary rolls associated with -the cutting rolls or knives are eliminated, and in addition to this simplification, universatility is obtained by adjustab-ly securing said cutting means, whereby different widths of paper, within the capacity of the machine, can be trimmed or otherwise cut into strips of suitable width, and by adjust-ing the tension means, said cutting means are adapted to cut substantially all thicknesses of paper and the like.
Means are also provided for deflecting the strip, commonly called the trimmings, from the table and outwardly so that the same does not come in contact with the paper roll positioned upon the shaft 21. These means include a depending member 160 suitably secured to the lug member 65. The member 160 supports a suitably shaped deflecting member 161 by which the trimming or strip 162 is deflected from the paper roll and the pasted paper.
The means for removing the excess paste upon the paper comprises the brush member 63. The brush 63 includes a bristle supporting body portion 81, said body portion including an enclosing tray portion 82. The brush and tray are supported by a plurality of upwardly extending link or lever members 83, said members being suitably se cured upon the rock shaft 41. such that when said shaft is turned said brush will also move therewith (see Fig. 7). When revolved into the inoperative position, shown in said figure, the tray portion 82 forms a receiving member for the paste which drains from the brush bristles 63, and when said shaft is rotated in the opposite direction so that said parts are returned to the "operative position, said tray discharges" the collected paste upon the paste plate 150 and thence through the openings 1 H into the paste containing receptacle 43 positioned therebeneath. The paste removing means hereinbefore described are adjustably secured to the supporting lever 83 by means of a thumb screw 84, whereby said brush means may be replaced or renewed when worn.
The means for maintaining said brush means in contact with the paper 62 upon the. paper supporting roller 61, comprises a tension rod 85 pivotally secured at one end to the lever 60, the other end extending through a suitable slot formed in the lever 83and carrying upon its free end the adjusting wing nut 86, whereby the tension of said brush upon the paper may be adjusted to\ the paste requirements of the latter. This slot and rod arrangement also permits the brush means to have a limited amount of movement independently of the roller 61 as shown clearly inFig. 7, so that the paper 62 may be threaded therebetween.
The means for limiting the movement of the shaft 41 comprises a stop lug 87, said lug being suitably secured to said shaft and being adapted to engage upon the bead 88 formed upon the upper adjacent edge of the housing 10. Said lug is positioned upon said shaft such that when the paper supporting roll 61 is removed from the operative position into a position shown in Fig. 7, the paste applying roller 42, and if de sired the paste containing receptacle 43, may be removed from said housing 10, said paste receptacle being provided with suitable collapsible handle means 14:0.
The invention has been described in detail, but many modifications of these features thereof will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, and it is to be understood that those modifications are considered to be within the purview of this invention.
The invention claimed is:
1. In a pasting machine the combination with paste applying means, a supporting member adjacent said paste applying means, and brush means adjacent said supporting ,member and bearable thereon, of means pivotally supporting said brush means adjacent said paste applying means and movable into an inoperative position, and means associated with said brush means for collecting the excess paste from said brush means when the latter is in the inoperative position.
2. In a pasting machine the combination with paste applying means, a paste receptacle, a supporting member adjacent said paste applying means, and brush means adj acenut said supporting member, of means pivotally supporting said brush means adjacent said paste applying means and movable into an inoperative position, and means assosaid collecting means discharging the collected paste into said paste receptacle when in the operative position, said collecting means normally deflecting the paste removed by said brush means into said paste receptacle.
3. In a pasting machine the combination with paste applying means, a supporting member, excess paste removing means, and cutting means, of a plurality of lever means pivotally supported at one end upon said machine, said cutting means being supported at the other end of said lever means and adjacent said member, all of said means being movable from the operative to an inoperative position.
4;. In a pasting machine the combinat on with paste applying means, a supportlng member, and excess paste removing means pivotally supported adjacent said supporting member, of cutting means pivotally supported adjacent said supporting member,
and means pivotally supporting said member and all of said means adjacent said paste applying means and being movable into an inoperative position.
5. In a pasting machine the combination with a housing, a paste containing receptacle slidably supported within said housing and paste applying means supported within said paste receptacle and positioned within the paste, of means for maintaining said paste applying means at a predetermined depth within the paste.
6. In a pasting machine the combination with a housing, a paste containing receptacle and paste applying means slidably supported within said paste receptacle and positioned within the paste, of means supporting said paste receptacle within said housing, said means cooperating with said receptacle to maintain the paste applying means at a predetermined depth in the paste.
7. In a pasting machine the combination with a housing, a paste containing receptacle and paste applying means supported within said paste receptacle and positioned within the paste, of means supporting said paste receptacle within said housing, said means cooperating with said receptacle to maintain the paste applying means at a predetermined depth in the paste, and means for determining the predetermined depth to be main- 'tained.
8. In a pasting machine the combination with paste applying means, a paste receptacle and a housing for said paste receptacle,
of means associated with said paste recep tacle and said housing for slidably supporting the former within the latter, said supporting means including compensating means, whereby the paste receptacle will be moved therefrom, whereby said paste a ply automatically elevated as the paste is reing means will be maintained at a pre eter mined depth in the paste.
9. A pasting machine including in combination paste applying means, a supporting member adjacent said paste applying means, excess paste removing means ad acent said supporting member, cutting means adjacent said supporting member, and means pivotally supporting said supporting member, excess paste removing means and said cutting means and movable into an inoperative position.
.10. A pasting machine including in combination paste applying means, a supporting member adjacent said paste applying means, excess paste removing means adjacent said supporting member, cutting means adjacent said supporting member, and means pivotally supporting said excess paste removing means and said cutting means whereby said cutting means and said excess paste removing .means will each be movable independently of the supporting member for threading purposes.
11. In a pasting machine the combination with a roll support and paste applying mechanism, of adjustable cutting means adjacent said paste applying mechanism, and deflecting means carried by said cutting means and adjustable therewith for deflecting the trimmings away from the roll.
12. In a pasting machine the combination with a paste receptacle, paste applying means rotatable in said paste receptacle, a supporting member adjacent said rotary paste apply ing means, and an excess paste removing means associated with said supporting member, of an auxiliary paste receiving and applying means positioned adjacent said rotary pasting means and adaptedvto receive paste therefrom, and from said excess paste removing means, and means associated with said auxiliary paste receiving and applying means for maintaining a supply of paste.

In a pasting machine the combination of a housing, a paste receptacle removably supported therein and substantially filling the same, and handle means upon said receptacle for removing the same from said housing, said handle means being collapsibly, positioned. upon said receptacle and comprising a plurality of eyelet means and rod means slldable n said eyelet means, said rod means having their lower ends amass? with said brush means for collectingthe excess paste from said brush means when the latter is in the inoperative position, and means for adjusting the pressure of said brush means upon said supporting member. 16. In a pasting machine the combination with paste applying means, a supporting member adjacent said paste applying means, brush means adjacent said 'su porting mem ber and bearable thereon, 0 means pivotally supporting said brush means adjacent said paste applying means and movable into an inoperative position, means associated with said brush means for collecting the excess paste from said brush means when the latter is in the inoperative position, means for adjusting the pressure of said brush means upon said supporting member, and means for limiting the movement of said brush means into the inoperative position.
17. In a pasting machine the combination with paste applylng mechanism, a supporting member therefor, excess paste removing means associated with the paste applying means, and cutting means, of a plurality of lever means pivotally supported at one end upon said machine, said cutting means being supported at the other end of said lever means and adjacent said member, all of said means being movable from the operative to an inoperative position, and means for limiting .the movement of said movable means in the inoperative position.
18. In a pasting machine the combination with paste applying means, a supporting member therefor, and excess paste removing means and associated with the paste applyally supported adjacent said supportingmember, means pivotally supporting said member and all of said means adjacent said paste applying means and being movable into an inoperative position, and means for limiting the movement of said movable means in the inoperative position.
19. A pasting machine-including in combination paste applying means, a supporting member adjacent said paste applying means, excess paste removing means adjacent said supporting member, cutting means adjacent said supporting member, means pivotally supporting said supporting member, excess paste removing means and said cutting means and movable into an inoperamovement of said movable means in the inoperative position.
20. A pasting machine including in combination aste applying means, a supporting mem er adjacent said paste applying means, excess paste removing means adjacent said supporting member, cutting means adjacent said supporting member, means pivotally supporting said excess paste removing means and said cutting and removing means whereby said cutting means and said excess paste removing means will each be movable independently of the supporting member for threading purposes, and means for limiting the movement of each of said means.
21. In a paste applying machine the combination with a paste receptacle, a paste applying roller positioned in said receptacle, and paste applying mechanism associated with said paste applying roller and above the same, of means supporting said paste applying mechanism in the paste applying position, said paste applying mechanism be ing movable into a non-pasting position to permit access to said roller, and means associated with said supporting means for limiting the movement of the paste applying mechanism in the non-pastmg position.
22. In a pasting machine the combination with a paste receptacle, a paste applying roller adjustably positioned in said receptacle and substantially closing the same, and paste applying mechanism associated with said paste applying roller and above the same, of means supporting said paste applying mechanism in the paste applying position, said paste applying mechanism being movable into a non-pasting position to per- Init access to said receptacle after the roller has been detached therefrom, and means associated with said supporting means for limitin the movement of the paste applying mechanism in the non-pasting position.

23. In a paste applying machine, the combination with a. housing, a detachable paste receptacle supported thereby, a paste applying roller detachably positioned 1n said re-,-

A portable knock-down paste applying mechanism, including in combination a rectangular housing, paste applying mechanism supported by said housing and adapted to apply paste to an elongated strip of material bracket means on said housing, a detachable table for supporting the elongated material when pasted, bracket means complementary to said housing bracket means and engageable therewith for detachably securing said table to said housing, detachable supporting legs, and complementary means on said housing and said legs for detachably and ri idly securing the housing thereto.
25. portable knock-down paste applying machine, including in combination a rectangular housing, paste applying mechanism supported by said housing and at one side thereof, detachable table means detachably supported upon the opposite side of said housing and upon said housing and detachable supporting legs detachably secured to said housing at the other sides thereof for supporting said housing, said table means and said paste applying mechanism.
