tl/oi'inted in 'the outer. cud o t the c vlindcr` il?, an insulating base l() containing a pair ot contact tips -ll resiliently pressed in a `lvell known manner toward the plug`v 35. These tips are adapted to engage the contacts 3G when the head is niovcd to put the mirror in operative position and mov-e away from the same when the head is' moved to turn the mirror away trom operative position.
To cause the relative movement ot' the plug 3d and base l() necessary to this operation the cylinder 3T is fixed to the isleeve al to rotate therewith while the base l0 is fixed to the. tube l() to be held lagainst rotation thereby. To this end a, screw i3 is passed through a suitable close tting aperture in the sleeve, i and is threaded into the c vlindin v3T, while-a screw il passes from the tube through a quadrantal slot in the c-ylinder 3T and is threaded into the base Ltt).
it will be apparent then 'that when the head 3 is rotated it carries with it the cylinder 371 which in turn carries the lamp. plug with its contacts 36, while the screw lll holds the 'base Ail() against rotation. the quadrantal slot 45 in the cylinder permitting rotation. et the latter as will be obvious. l prefer to arrange the parts so that when the mirror is mounted facing backward the lamp circuit will be open and will be closed by swiiiging the 'mirror to the downwardly facing position shown in Figure 2 in which the red lens 3Q 'faces toward the rear and the white lens ifaces toward the front. I
ln the modiiied form shown in Figures 6 to 9, the principle o1" operation above described is maintained, the device heilig arrai'iged 'for mounting on the mudguard of the vfront wheel, thc'mud guard being indin cated in cross section at 5i). ln this modification the globular head 3', mirror '18", red and white lenses 3Q and 33 are asabove described. Fixed to the undersideA oi the globular head 3', is a short sleeve 5l which projects .into :i hollow standard having a widened base 53 adapted to be secured by screws it to the mud guard ot' the automobil e The opening through the base into the standard is of diminished size and is surrounded b v an upstanding 'flange 5G spaced. inwardly from the wall ot the standard.
Fitting snugly over this flange and resting upon the base is a tubev 57 whose upper end projects into the sleeve 5l this tube being held against rotation by a pin58 on the flange which projects into a longitudinal slot 59' in the lower end of the tube, this tube corresponding in iinetion to the tube l() and enclosing at its upper end a cylinder 1f-2" similar to the cylinder 37, this cylinder' containing a .lamp plug 35 with its terminals7 and base d0 'with its terminals in all respec s similar to those shown in Figures 2 and l. The cylinder 3T" is fixed to the sleeve 5l by a screw 43 similar to the screw d3, while the base l0 is lixed to the tube 57 by a screw il similar to the screw il and passing through a like qi'iadrantal slot in the c vlindcr. The sleeve 51 is retained against longitudinal displacement from the standard 52 by means of a screw G0 threaded through the latter and projecting into a quadrantal slot 61. in the sleeve, while a clamping device (3Q, similar to that shown in Figure 1 is carried on the end of the standard to clamp it tightly upon the sleevewhen desired.
-lt will be apparent that rotation of the head 3 will cause the cylinder 3,7 and lamp plug to rotate and thereby close or open the lamp circuit, the parte being arranged that a turn of the mirror from a backward facing position to a position 'facing inwardly toward the engine hood will close-the circuit and vice versa. l y
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire Ito pr'otect by Letters Patent of the United States is as 'follouW l. ln a device of the class described.y a hollow head, a lamp in said head, said head having an aperture forlexposure ot said lamp, a mirror carried by said head, an element on which said head is rotatably mounted, a lamp plug rotatable with said, head, a -contact device non-rotatable on said element and adapted to engage the said lamp plug and close the circuit to the lamp when the said plug and device are in one relative rotative `position and to open' the lamp cifrcuit when the said plug and device are in another relative rotative position.
In a device ot the class described, al hollow head. a lamp in said. head, said headI having an aperture for exposure of said lamp, a mirror carried by said head, an element on which said'head is rotatably m0untcd.y a lamp plug rotatable with said head, al contact device non-rotatable on said element and adapted to engage the said lamp plug and close the circuit to the lamp when the said plug and device are in one relative rotative position and to open the lamp circuit when the said plug and device are inanother relative rotative posit-ion, and means limiting the relative rotation ot' said lamp and device between the said positions.
3. ln a device ofthe class 'described` a hollow head, a mirror carried by said head, lamp lenses carried by saidl head,'a sleeve projecting from one side of said head, atube projecting int-o said sleeve, a cylinder engaged by the outer en d of the sleeve, a lamp .plug and a contactbase spaced longitudinally in said cylindencontact elements on said plug and base adapted to engage and disengage as said plug is rotated relatively to said base, said plug being non-rotatable in said sleeve to Lemos@ said cylinderond saidV base being roratadoiov in said cylinder, a screw passing from the the cylinder and fixing the' lat-rer to the :tormento rotate therewith, and a screw passing from. the said -tube .-othe said base and'dfixing the lutter tothe former, said Cylinder hving a quadrantal 'slot in the wall .thereof through Whichsaid ast screw` passes.
4c. in a'devic'e of thel class described, a hoiloW head, a lamp in said head,' sad'head having' an aperture Jfor exposure of said lamp, a mirror carried by said head, an eiement on which said head is rotaabiy mounted, a. lamp plug carried in said head o rotate therewih', and a Contact making device carried by and enclosed within the said eiement and adapted mngage the said lamp pluggand .close the circuit to the lamp when che said plug and. device areI in one relative position und to open 'the' hunp'cirouit when he said piugand device areinanother rela tive position. l
In testimony whereof I. have aixed my signature. l
