Description

MARY JANE PlTRAT.
Thread-Cutters.
No. 141,235, Pa-tentedjuly29,i873.
I MEI/26.5505. [Ill/@7110";
I EHQAQ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY JANE- PITRAT, OF GALLIPOLIS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS HER RIGHT TO NELSON S. -ANGELL, JAMES HANNAN, AND DANIEL WILLIAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THREAD-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,235, dated July 29, 1873 application filed June 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY JANE PITRAT, of Gallipolis, in the county of Gallia and in the State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Thread-Cutter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a thread-cutter, to be used in combination with a sewing-thimble, formed of a spring, with a cutting-edge, affixed to a springband, by which the device is secured to the thimble, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an enlarged side view of my invention attached to a thimble. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a modified form of my invention.
A represents the thimble. B is the springba-nd, embracing the thimble and securing the thread-cutter on the thimble. It is preferably made of steel; and it may be suitably ornamented by polishing, plating, washing, engraving, &c. The ends of this band do not touch, and so allowing the band to be adjustable to any size of thimble. In the middle of this band B spring 0 is firmly secured by its middle, while its end a is turned up and provided with a point, b, and cutting-edge c that projects partly through a slot, d, in the other end, 0, of the spring I can make a simpler thread-cutter than the one just described by dispensing with spring 0 and constructing the band B of wire, making one of its ends barbed, as in Fig. 3, where the cutting-surface is shown between the points a and b of the barbed end.
My invention is secured to any thimble used in sewing by slipping the spring-band B over the taper end and forcing the band to the rim of the thimble. When thus placed on the thimble, and it on the sewers finger, any sewingthread may be quickly and easily out by drawing taut the thread to be severed with one hand and applying the cutting-edge of the device to the thread with the other hand.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The detachable thread-cutter for sewingthimbles, consisting of the spring-band B and spring-cutter O, substantially as shown.
2. The thread-cutter, constructed as herein described, in combination with a sewing-thimble.
In testimony that I claim the above-described certain new and useful thread-cutter I have hereunto signed my name this 12th day of June, 1873.
MARY JANE PITRAT.
