Toallwit'om it may concern:
Be it known that we, .ALFRED C. GA DI and ARMANI) GALDI,.-citizens of the United States, residing at .Somervill-e, in the county. of .Mid: dles'eX,- in' the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement'in ine Presses ,.-of which the following is. a specification, reference/being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to manually operated'p resses for usein the making of wine, cider and the like, and our immediate object is to provide, at a reasonable cost, a portable press which is specially suited for family use and in which the mechanical construction is such that great power may be produced by a ingle operator during the act of compressing the fruit. A further improvement con sists of special means whereby the jacket which encloses the said fruit may be readily removed from its operative position in order that the so called cheese or pummice may be removed from the press. Other advantages of improvement will be specifically described and claimed hereinafter.
In order to explain'our invention clearly we have provided the annexed drawings, in which the Figure 1 is an elevation of a press embodying our present improvements and Figure 2 is a top or plan view of the same. Figure 3 is a detail view of one of the clamps by means of which the two part jacket which surrounds. the press proper is latched together. Figure 4: is an elevation of the press stripped of its cylindrical jackets, showing particularly the manner of removing the two part press-board 22, Figure 5 is a vertical,
central, sectional, view of the base plate 10.
Figure 6 is mainly an elevation of certain lever-operated mechanism by means of which increased pressure may be given to the pressboards 22 after the initial pressure has been given through the screw 19, nut 21 and hand wheel 20. Figure 7 is a plan viewof the mechanism shown in said Figure 6 and Fig ure 8 is a detail, side, view of said mechanism.
In these drawings the numeral 10 indicates a substantial base-plate which is here shown as mounted on a plurality of legs 11.
Removably mounted on said base-plate is an outer jacket 12, of sheet material, which serves co-prevent the fruit juices from squirting laterally while the said fruit is being placed under pressure and located within, and concentric with, said outer jacket 12, is a I Specification of Lettersiate'nt. Patented 4, 192 2. Application filed December 3, 1920. Serial No. 428,025.
two-part wall formed of vertical strips 13 which are suitably spaced apart and are connected by hoops 14:, the meetingends of said hoops being connected by clamps that are best seen in- Figure 3 of thedrawings. Each clampconsist essentially of a lug 15 on one of the hoop members 14 and :of a latch 16, that lSlhiI1gd .at 16 to the opposing end portion of the companion hoopmember and is .ad'apted'to bela-tched over the lug 15,1as will-be best n-nderstood by reference to Fig ures 2 and 3 of the drawings. Formed in the base plate 10, between the outer shell 12 and theslotted shell 13 is a groove 17 which is provided to receive the fruit juices andto convey the same to a discharge spout 18. Rotatably mounted in the central portion of base plate 10 is a screw 19 which has fixed to its upperend a hand wheel 20 .andon its mid portion a threaded plate 2l1and located below said threaded plate is a two-part pressure board 22 which rests upon the cheese of fruit when the press is in operation.
NVhen it is desired to. usethe described press the outer hell 12 and slotted jack 13 are mounted on the base plate 10 and the screw 19 is suitably rotated to raise the plate 21 above the level of the tops of the slots 13. -The fruit is then poured into the basket formed bythe slotted jacket, the twopart pressure board 22 is placed on said fruit, the hand wheel 20 is suitably rotated to run the threaded plate 21 down uponthe' pressure board 22. Continued rotation of the screw 19 then operates to compress the fruit until the juices'are forced outward be- Ifeadily removed from the press.
7 In order that extraordinary power may be I applied to crew 19 we have provided supplemental mechanism which isbest seen in Figures 6., 7. and 8 of the drawings, which we will now describe. Secured to the lower end of the screw 19 is a ratchet wheel or gear.
23 which is engaged by a double-end pawl2 l which is pivoted, at 25, in a lever 26 that is fulcruined at 27 in an extension 28 of the tween theslots 13 and run down by gravity 7 into the trough 17 and are discharged'thence through the spout 18 into a suitable recepout of the fruit the outer jacket 12 is removed 'plate. The cheese or pummice may then be base plate 10. The numeral 29 denotes an upright lever which is fulcrumed at 30, on the extension 28; the lower end portion of the lever 29 being connected with the outer end of the lever 24 in such manner that, when the upper end of the lever 29 is reciprocated, the lever 26 will be rocked on its fulcrum and the pawl 24: will operate, through the medium of ratchet disc 23, to rotate the screw 19 with a step-by-step movement. We arethus enabled to apply extraordinary pressure to the pressboard 22, if desired, after the screw has been manually rotated by means of the hand Wheel 20.
Our described invention provides, at a reasonable costof construction, a press which is specially convenient for family use, which is eifectivein its operation and results, and
which may be readily taken apart for the Q removal of the pummice and for cleaning.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim r V p 1. In a press of the class referred to, a circumferentially grooved base, a screw centrally and rotatably mounted in said base, an outer shell and an inner slotted two-part jacket mounted on said.base,.a hand wheel,
jacket mounted on said base, a hand wheel fixed on said screw, means for latching the two parts of said jacket together, and'supplementali means for rotating said screw.
