Be it known that we, J oHN INGRAHAM and Emmi: Nonoaano, citizens of the United States, residing' in Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of lowa, have invented a new and useful Automobile `Lock, of which the following is a. specification. l Ourinventon relates to improvements in automobile locks in which a cut-off is locked in the manifold; andV the objects ,of ourini- F'rst, to Vprovide `a locked cut-'offjin the manifold `of an automobilethat 'will suc# cessfully stop the running ofthe engine to which the manifold is applied; second, to'
provide such a lock without a supporting stem to cause leakage from the outside; third,

The operation of the manifold lock is accomplished by inserting the key in the lock Z, and turning it a suitable number of turns or portion thereof, so that the pinion p, turns in the Segment g, until the web fw is turned to its desired position. If the manifold lock with its cut-off f, bev closed, the lock 'can only be turned to open the valve and the pinion p', will move to the extremity of its travel in the gear segment g. The web w, will take the position away from the closed. portions a and Z), of the cylinder c, allowing the mixture of gases through the manifold m, to pass to the engine. If the cut-off f, be opened, the key may be inserted in the lock and turned until pinion p, reaches the other extremity of its travel, closing the cut-olf '71. When the cut-off f, is closed, the cover h leaves the duct 0 open, admitting air through the duct 0. When the cut-off is open the cover it, is so placed with reference to the duct o, as'to cover it as shown in Fig. T. The key in the lock may be ywithdrawn at either extremity of the movement of pinion p, with respect to the gear segment g, thus leaving the cut-off locked in an open or shut position. By reason of the movement of the cut-off f, being a fraction of a turn of the movement of the barrel of lock Z, the key in the lock has a leverage over the movement of the cut-olf f, preventingthe cut-off f, from sticking or holding against the opening of closing of the lock as is the case where the turning member cut-off f.
l/Vhat we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l
l. In a manifoldV lock a transverse cylinder in the manifold with a passage formed therein; a cylindrical cut-olf having a central cross web; a limited gear segment on the cut-off; aV pinion engaging said gear j, of the lock connects directly with segment, and a commercial lock ,engaging said pinion.

a pinion engaging said gear segment; a commercial lock engaging said pinion and an air duct leading into said cylinder arranged to be opened when said cut-off is closed and closed when said cut-off is opened.
