REGINALD RICHARDSON AND JAMES FREDERICK KEY, 01 OVERTON, ENGLAND.
CYLINDER MOLD FOR PAPER-MAKING MACHINES.
To all whom it may con cern Be it known that we, REGINALD RICHARD- SON and JAMES FREDERICK KEY, subjects of His Majest the King ofEngland, and residents of outhington Overton, lit the county of Hants and ingdom ofEngland, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in and Relating to Cylinder lolds for Paper-Making Machines, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention re ates to expandlng cylinder molds used in cylinder mold machines for making all classes of papers and paper boards, and also to dandy rolls used on other paper making machines.
The invention has for its rimary object to provide an improved cyllnder mold or dandy roll which can be expanded truly so that the outermetal gauze cover can be kept perfectly taut and true, thus ensuring an 1 even distribution of every fibre and perfect Water mark.
Another object of this invention is to re-' strongly jointed covers in store ready to put on the cylinder mold, or dandy roll at a moments notice.
Another object of this invention is to enable paper makers to make water mark embossed or water mark filigree paper to perfection and the cover of the cylinder mold or dandy roll to retain much longer life.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in providing a cylinder mold or dandy roll with means whereby the diameter thereof may be increased or decreased evenly and truly so that the outer metal gauze cover can be kept perfectly taut and true.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in whi ch2 Figure 1 is a cross section;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of part of a cylinder mold;
Figure 3 is an enlarged part end view thereof;
Figure cis a perspective view of a detail;
Figure 5 is a part plan showing details of the backing attachment, and
Figure 6 is a sectional elevation thereof.
In a suitable manner of carrying out this invention as shown in the drawings, the
I Specification of Letters Patent.
cylinder mold or dandy roll comprises a hollow steel shaft 1 which is preferably covered with copper or other suitable material 2 to prevent rust. On this shaft 1 is attached Patented Apr. 4, 1922. Application filed June 8, 1920. SeriaI No. 387,424. I v
cate a ratchet wheel 5 which is adapted to.
expand the cylinder mold or dandy. roll.
This wheel 5 is formed with inclined teeth 6 to engage with longitudinal rods 7 of the cylinder mold. Attached to the ratchet wheels 5 are a plurality of fixed lugs 8 which are suitably placed and angularly arranged and disposed parallel with the teeth 6 to draw the rods 7 of the circular frames 3 of the mold down evenly. The ratchet wheel or wheels 5 is or are held on the circular frames 3 by means of set screws or bolts 9 passing through sector shaped slots. 10 formed in the said ratchet wheels 5; these set screws or bolts 9 also limit the movement of the ratchet wheels 5 in either direction. The circular frames 30f the mold are formed with radially arranged recesses 11 which are placed adjacent to the angular shaped teeth 6 formed on the periphery of the ratchet wheel 5. In these recesses 11 of the frames 3 are radially arran ed the fiat metal rods or bars 7 which exten longitudinally across the frames 3 and rest on the teeth 6 of the ratchet wheels 5. To these rods or bars 7 are attached shaped lugs 12 on the inner ends of which are mounted rollers or the like 13. These rollers 13 are adapted to contact with the under side of the fixed lugs 8 on the ratchet wheels 5, so as to contract the surface of the cylinder mold. Through the arms or framework of the circular frames 3 is rotatably mounted a metal rod 14 of suitable strength to which is. attached small cogs 15. The cogs 15 are adapted to co-operate with an arc of teeth 16 which is attached to each of the ratchet wheels 5. To one end of the rod 14 outside the frame 3 is secured a worm wheel 17 which is adapted to be rotated by a worm 18 thus bringing the expanding and contracting gear into action. The worm 18 is mounted on a shaft 19 which is formed with preferably a squared end 20 for the reception of a detachable handle. Each longitudinal rod 7 of the mold is drilled or recessed along the surface edge and through these holes or recesses 21 are threaded arcs of suitable wire or the like 22, or alternatively sections of suitable spiral backing are mounted. on and attached to the longitudinal rods 7. The ends of the spiral backing are connected by transverse plates or the like 23 which are secured toand supported by bridges 24 which are attached to one or more of the longitudinal rods 7. The
plates are formed with slots 25 for the recep-- tion of set screws or the like 26 which .are secured to the bridges 24. The bridges 24 and 17, rotate the shaft 14 and turn the cog wheels 15 which co-operate with the arcs of teeth 16. This action will move the ratchet wheels 5 in one direction or the other to exand or contract the outer surface of the cylinder mold or dandy roll through the medium of the rollers 13 contacting with the angularly arranged lugs 8 and the co-operating supporting teeth 6 on the ratchet wheels 5 and the outer frame of the mold.
What we claim is:-
l. A cylinder mold or dandy roll for paper making machines, including radially acting elements to increase or decrease the diameter of the mold in accordance with the direction of movement of said elements, and means for simultaneously operating said elements. I
2. A cylinder mold or dandy roll for pa per making machines comprising a shaft, a plurality of frames mounted on said shaft, :1
, plurality of longitudinally arranged rods or bars mounted in recesses formed in the frames and adapted to support the cover of the mold, one or more ratchet wheels adapted to engage the longitudinal rods or bars,
and means for moving the ratchet wheel or wheels, as and for the purposes described.
3. A cylinder mold or dandy roll as claimed in claim 1, wherein the longitudinal rods or bars are fitted with lugs to engage with inclined lugs or surfaces formed on the ratchet wheel or wheels, for the purposes described. I
4. A cylinder mold or dandy roll as claimed in claim 2, wherein the ratchet wheel or wheels is or are mounted on the frames and wherein the frames are formed or provided with flanges on which the ratchet wheels are reci rocated.
5. In a cylin er mold or dandy roll' as claimed in claims 2 and 4, the provision of rack teeth on the ratchet wheels adapted to co-operate with ear wheels mounted on a shaft extending Iongitudinally of the cylinder or dandy roll and adapted to be actuated through the medium of a worm and worm wheel.
- 6. In a cylinder mold or dandy roll as claimed in claim 3, the provision of rollers on the lugs to contact with the inclined lugs or surfaces.
'7. In a cylinder mold. as claimed in claim 2, 3, 4 or 5, the provision of means to limit the movement of the ratchet wheels.
8. A cylinder mold or dandy roll for pa per making machines, including radially acting elements to increase or decrease the diameter of the said mold, and means adapted in rotation to simultaneously actuate all of. said elements in one direction.
9. In a cylinder mold or dandy roll, a supporting member an element mounted for rotation thereon, a plurality of lugs carried on said element, surface-formin rods for the mold, and a series of radi ly acting elements connected to said rods and operated by and in the movement of said lugs.
10. A cylinder mold comprising a supporting. member, an element mounted for rotation thereon, a series of independent lugs carried by sald element, surface defining rods, and members secured to the respective rods and each engaging a cooperating lug, the release of the lugs to said elements inducing simultaneous movement of the elements in one or the other directions in accordance with the movement of the rotating member.
11. A cylinder mold comprising a support-
