UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. v
SUPPORTING AND DRIVING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1922.
Application filed August 14, 1919. Serial No. 817,545.
To all whom it may comer-n:
Be it known that I, HARRY G. SEABER, States,'a'nd a resident of the city of Alton, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Supporting and Driving Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. f
This invention relates to apparatus for supporting and driving machines of various kinds, and although not limited to such use,
it is particularly adapted for use in supporting and driving wringers.
In those devices commonly used for supporting and driving wringers, provision has been made for attaching them to the edge of the washing machines, tubs or the like. Such means for supporting the wringers have been found to be unsatisfactory, however, for the reason that the shape'and size of washing etc., vary s greatly that a supporting attachment, suitable for one shape or size is not adapted for use with another shape or size.
My invention is particularly designed to obviate this difliculty.
It is an object therefore of the invention to provide a support adapted to rest on the floor and support and also drive a wringer or other machine.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the angular position of the driven machine may be varied as desired without changing the position of the sup- Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the drawings and specification.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan yiew of the device.
Figure 3 is a section on thelline 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 44 of Figure 3. 7
horizontal platform 5 from Figure 5 is a side elevation of the rotatable head and parts integral therewith.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6--6, of Figure As shown on the drawings The device comprises a standard 1, comprising a tubular column 2, provided with outwardly extending supporting legs 3. Rotatably mounted on the top of the column 2 is a head 4. This head is provided with a which a sleeve 6 depends. This sleeve is adapted to slide over the top freely thereon except when clamped in any desired angular position by a set screw 7, operated by a lever 8.
On one end of the platform a vertical frame 9 is provided which may conveniently be formed integrally with the platform 5.
' At the opposite end of the frame an elec-* tric motor'lO, is mounted for the purpose of driving a wringer 11, or other machine secured to the frame 9.
Betweenthe frame and the motor suitable power connections are provided, preferably reversible especially when the device is used for operatinga wringer.
In the construction shown a casing 01 housing is provided for the reversinggearing. This casing consists of a cylindrical base 12, preferably formed integral with the platform 5, and arranged concentrically with respect to the sleeve 6. To this base is secured by bolts 13, a hemispherical cap 14.
The driving shaft 15 of the motor extends into this casing and is journalled between the base 12 and cap 14. In the other side of the casing is journalled a stub shaft 16 in alignment with the shaft 15.
On the shaft 15 a bevel pinion 17 is rotatably mounted while a second beveled pinion 18, is rigidly secured to the shaft 16. These pinions are both in mesh with a third bevel pinion 19, having a stub shaft '31, journalled in a boss '20, centrally arranged in the cap 14:
The shaft 15 may be operatively connected to the pinions17 and 18 alternatively by a clutch 21, slidably but non-rotatably mount- "ed on the shaft 15. or moving this clutch of the column 2 and to rotate standing arms -25. On the inner faces of these arms pins 26 are provided adapted to engage a peripheral groove 27 in the clutch 21.
The shaft 16 may conveniently be connected to the operating shaft of the wringer- I am aware that various details of con;
struction may be varied through I a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and it is not intended therefore, to limit the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
. I-claim as my invent1on:
1. A device of the class descr1bed comprising a wringer connected to a driving means through a reversing mechanism comprisinga casing having a removable top, a substantially horizontal shaft journalled in one side of said casing and connected to the driving means, I a bevel gear rotatably mounted'on said shaft, a second shaft jourvnalled in the opposite side of the casing and in alignment with the first shaft, a bevel gear ri idly mounted on the second shaft, means or removably connecting the second shaft to the wringer, a bevel gear rotatably carried by the removable top of the casing and adapted to rotate about a substantially vertical axis, said bevel gear being in continuous engagement with the previously mentioned gears, and a clutch adapted to selectively connect the first shaft to the second shaft either directly or throughthe bevel gears for rotating the wringer in either direction desired. v
2. A device of the class described comprising a wringer connected to a driving means through a reversing mechanism embracing a casing having a removable top, a substantially horizontal shaft journalled in one side of said casing and connected to the driving means, a bevel gear rotatably mounted on said shaft, a second shaft journalled in the opposite side of the casing and in alignment with the first shaft, a bevel gear rigidly mounted on the second shaft, a bevel gear rotatably carried by the removable top of the casing and adapted to rotate about a substantially vertical axis, said bevel gear being in continuous engagement with the previously mentioned gears, and a clutch adapted to selectively connect the first shaft to the second shaft either directly or through the bevel gears for rotating the wringer in either direction desired.
3. A device of the kind described comprising a standard, a rotatable head mounted thereon including a cylindrical .member adapted to rotatably engage the top of said standard, means integral therewith engaging the top of the standard and extending laterally therefrom, a cylindrical casing on saidl means, a removable top for the casing, a driven mechanism mounted on the laterally extending means, and an electric motor also mounted on said laterally extending means connected to said driven mechanism by a reversing mechanism mounted in the cylindrical casing.
i. In a device, of the class described, a supporting standard, an inclosing casing having oppositely disposed platforms and a bearing socket rotatably mounted on-said standard, a motor mounted on one platform, a wringer'mounted on the other platform, and means mounted within said casing for operatively connecting said motor and wringer. y
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I a
