. l Q REEL FOR. PORTABLE ELECTRIC LAMPS.
= tric Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a reel for a portable electric lamp, and the object is to provide a device which may be installed in various positions, and may be shifted to the most convenient position for use when employing the light about an automobile, when employing the light for reading purposes, or when employing the light about any piece .of machinery which it is desired to illuminate.
the type indicated which may be used in connection with electricallyl heated irons for A laundry purposes and the like.
' reel terminals 19 In the accompanying drawings.' Flgure 1 1s a vlew chleiiy 1n elevatlon, Figure 2 1s a View 1n section.
Figure 3 is a view of the contact elements.
Figure 4 is a section through the casing, transversely of the shaft carrying the ree and showing the coiled spring.` 'i
Figure 5 is a detail ratchet mechanism.
In carrying out my invention I,provide a 10 mounted on a shaft 1l' supported in housing members 12 which in turn are mounted in a suitablecasing 14. One of these members 12 is recessed as shown for the accommodation of the coiled spring, and the other is recessed for the accommodation of the pawls of the ratchet mechanism.l
The reel 10 is-controlled by coiled spring 15 and operates on the shade roller principle, the pawls being designated 16 and serving wire 17 includes a plurality of conductors 18 and 19, these conductorshaving connection respectively with and 20 comprising coiled springs 21 and 22 and pins 23 and 24 passing throu h said springs.
The en s of these springs are deflected as shown at 25 and pass into the members 12A of the frame work, thereby supiorting the terminals in suitable position. ach spring Specification of Letters Patent.
- is provided at its tate v A further object is to provide a device ofy and ring member 27 f' view showing the I Patented Mar.' 28, 1922.
application mea February 2, 191s. semi no. 215,193.
opposite end with an outwardly extending member, one of these springs havin a substantially straight member 26 whic engages the surface of a metallic ring member 27 forming electrical contacttherewith. This member 27 is in electrical connection with one of the conductors of wire 17, and the other of said conductors forming a art of wire 17 is in electrical connection with a central metallic element 29 havin -anV o ening in one end thereof into whic the eflected end 30 of one of the aforesaid springs projects, thereby establishing the necessary electrical connection. Elements 27 and 29 are insulated from each other.
The flexible wire 17 is .of any suitable length andjis wound upon the reel 10, the individual conductors 18 and 19 passing along kthe ,central element of the reel to the points indicated for establishing `the electrical coniectlon specified. The reel is of insulating material and tubular member 29 are of conducting materlal.
The outer end of wire 17 leads to an electric lamp 32, which in View of the construction set forth, may be drawnv to any suitable position, or to the most convenient position for use.4
A wire 35 includes a plurality of conductors 36 and 37 connected respectively with the terminals 19 and 20 and leading thence to any suitable source of supply as a battery or lamp socket.
I claim: v In a winding device for a iiexible electrical conductor, a rotatable element constituting a reel and including a central axial element and flanged elements having unobstructed outer surfaces, a casing including transverse elements provided with bearings for mounting the reel therebetween, one of the transverse elements being recessed, a coiled spring within the recess and connected with one end of the axial element, the-other of said transverse elements being recessed and including a central member projecting into the recess, said member last named having teeth formed on the edge thereof, and pivoted en agin devices mountedon the adjacent ange member of the reel, for engaging the teeth, each of adjacent wall to form a chamber for housthe transverse elements including n flange ing devices permittin electrical connection surrounding the rec-ess therein and the edge with the ends of the aoresaid electrical con- 10 of each flange abutting the adjacent ianged ductor,
5 portion of the reel, for spacing the latter In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
from the walls of the casing, und one of the transverse elements being spaced from the MICHAEL DORION.
