APPARATUS FOR FEEDING WEB REELS on norms ,IN ROTARY NEWSPAPER PRINTING AND SIMILAR MACHINES.
Specification of letters Patent. Patented Mar. 28, 1922- A pplication filed October 19, 1920. (Serial No. 418,079.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS or THE ACT or MARCH 3, 192 1 41 srAr. L., 13 13.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE VILLIAM Mnsoonn, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at St. Agness, 14L castehiau, Barnes, London, S. W., England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Apparatus for Feeding'Web Reels or Rolls in Rotary Newspaper Printing and Similar Machines, (for which I have filed application in Great Britain, May 16,1919, Patent No. 152,705,) of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates toiapparat'us for feeding web reels or rolls in rotary newspaper printing and similar'machines and relates to such machines as are provided with reel carriers adapted to carry a number of reels and of being rotated or moved to bring the reels into position on the opposite side of the apparatus in the manner described in the specification of the prior Patent No. 769659 of 1904. p
According to the invention, I provide each pair of the reel-carrying brackets for the re ception of two reels and I support the corresponding driving band or hands upon the brackets in a position between the two reels so thatthe'same driving band may be used for feeding from one or other'reel mounted upon and between the same brackets. The driving spindle receives movement through bevel gear from a spindle extending along the side of the supporting frame and similarly receiving movement from a vertically disposed spindle also at the side of the frame and driven from a spindle radially disposed with respect to the axis of rotation of the frame. Means are provided such as described in the specification of the said prior patent for reversing the movement of the driving bands according to the position of the reel to be fed with reference to the band.
The respective brackets adapted to carry two reels are disposed one above the other in substantially the same manner as in the construction described in the specification of the said prior patent but the respective brackets are provided of greater strength and of greater length, means being provided for the reception of the two reel spindles instead of the one. The driving spindle of each driving band is carried by and between the respective pairs of brackets in a position bewhose lower ends are mount-edon the driving spindle and a weighted lever or other means are provided to permit of the frame thus constituted being brought to one side or the other of avertical line passing through the driving'spin'dle as may be desired according to the particular reel to be fed, the
arrangement and operation being substantially the same as that described in'the specification ofthe said prior patent.
on one side, however, a spindleextending alongtheirame is fitted with bevel gears by means of which movement may beimparted from a verticallyv disposed spindle mounted upon one side of the carrying'frame and supported therefrom by means" of brackets. Movement is imparted to the spindle last-referred to from a spindle which'extends centrally and transversely over the rotating base plateon which the frame is mounted and movement is imparted to this spindle in substantia'llythc same manner as described in thespecification of the said prior patent;
)It will be understood that brackets providedas described for the reception of two reels may be disposed in vertical series on each side of the carrying frame so that thus the respective brackets on one side are level with those upon the other and thus four reels are disposed upon the same level, and movement may be imparted to the respective driving bands for each set of two reels in the manner described.
The application of the invention is illus-.
supported on rollers or wheels I) so as to turn about a central axis and upon such base member a there is provided a structureor carrying frame a carrying four pairs of brackets 03 arranged in two groups of superposed in the same horizontal plane.
posed pairs, each pair of brackets being adapted to carry two reels'e of paper digst a point intermediate and below the bearings for the two reels on each bracket, there is provided a bearing for the receptionof a spindle f which serves to carry two of the driving pulleys g and also at each extremity an arm h extending in the upward direction and carrying at a position intermediate and abovethe bearings for the axles of the reels 6 a second spindle 2' upon which is mounted a second pair of drivingpulleys g, in positions adjusted with relation to those of the lower spindle in such manner that two driving bands j may be carried between the two spindles f The lower spindle 7 also serves to carry at each extremity an upwardly directed weighted arm is such that when the upper spindle i is thrown over from the vertical position in either direction, theweighted arms serve to 1 maintain the spindle against return movement and thus to apply pressure of the driving bands uponthe particular reel 6 of paper; I I
At one extremity each of the lower spindles f of the pairs of spindles is provided with a fixedly mounted bevel gear wheel Z and thebevel wheels of each of the spindles of the one tier are operated through a transverse shaft m arrangedalong the side I of the structure and carrying bevel gear wheels n in suitable positions to gear with those of the spindles. The transverse shafts m relating respectively to the upper and lower series of brackets are preferably con nected together by a vertically disposed shaft 0 carrying suitable bevel gears 70. Motion is conveniently transmitted to the 7 lower end of this vertical shaft and also to the lower transverse spindle m by means of a spindle g at right anglesthereto extending bands by means of which the web reels are rotated from gear deriving movement from a centrally disposed vertical shaft, the combination of pairs ofbrackets carried by the said frame, which brackets are adapted for the reception of two web reels and separate driving bands for each pair of brackets, the said driving bands being so mounted as to drive one or other of the web reels mounted on the respective brackets, substantially as described.
2. In a web reel carrier forprinting machines, of the kind comprisinga frame rotatable about a vertical axis and carrying pairs of-brackets thereon for the support of the web reel spindles and carrying endless driving bands by means of which the web reels are rotated from gear deriving movement from a centrally disposed vertical shaft, the combinationof pairs of brackets carried by the said frame, which brackets are adapted for the reception of two web reels and. separate driving bands for each pair of brackets, the
said driving bands being so mounted as to drive one or other of the web reels mounted on the respective brackets, and means for causing the movement of the saidrdriving bands from the central vertically disposed driving spindle, substantially as described.
