To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER TAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Smithfield, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Looks for Train-Pipe Angle Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic locks for the angle cocks in the brake system train. pipes, and its main object is to provide a locking device for these angle cocks which is operated by the fluid pressure in the pipes to preventthe angle cock plugs from being opened or closed the fluid pressure in the train pipes.
In the form of the invention disclosed in the drawings and hereinafter described in detail, theangle cock has a piston arranged concentrically with the rotary plug to be turned therewith. A spring is arranged to hold this piston in an elevated position when the train pipe pressure is below normal working pressure, and to yield to the pressure in the pipes and allow the piston to be. forced down into a position where it will cooperate with a fixed plug and lock the rotary plug against turning when suflicient pressure is attained in the train pipe.
Further objects and details of the invention will appear as described,in connection with the accompanying drawings and hereinafter set forth and claimed.

Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 44 of Figure 1.
The angle cock is designated generally by the reference numeral 10, and comprises a body portion, 11, rotary plug, 12. handle, 13, cylinder, 14, and other parts as will be set forth.
The rotary plug, 12, is preferably positioned in a bushing or lining, 15, in the body portion, 11, and is adapted to be rotated in the usualmanner by the handle, 13.

and form thereof disclosed in the drawings, the body, 11, is provided with an extending cylinder, 14, fastened thereto or formed inthis cylinder is a piston, 16, which is provided with projections, 17 and 18; the projections 17 are adapted to extend more or less into apertures, 19, in the bottom of the rotary plug 15, and the projections 18 are adapted to be forced into apertures, 20, in the cylinder closure plug, 21.
A cylinder bushing or liner, 22, may be provided for the piston to work in, and it also provides a support for a plate, 23, for

Figure 3, has two arcuate slots, 25, through which the pins 19 project and are permitted to turn through 90 de. grees, allowing the plug to turn to its two positionsopen and clo'sedas disclosed in Figures 1 and 2 respectively. The plug 12 has apertures, 26, and 27, for allowing the fluid pressure to enter the upper portion of the cylinder 14 and act upon the piston 16, and an aperture, 28, through the plug 21 allows the cylinder below the piston to remain at atmospheric pressure.
A spring, 29, is positioned under the piston, 16, between it and the plug, 21, which is of sufficient strength to elevate the piston so as to withdraw projections 18 from apertures 20 in the plug when the fluid pressure is below the desired operating pressure.
In Figure 1, the various parts are illustrated in the position they will assume when the plug is in open position and the angle cock connected in a train pipe system with a standard operating pressure maintained. Under these conditions the brakes .may be released and the pressure in the train pipes is such as to act upon the piston 16 in the angle cock to force it down (as shown) and lock it in open position. Assuming the train pipe pressure to be reduced a certain amount below the pressure which applies the brakes, the spring 29 will force the piston up unlocking the plug so that it mav be turned to closed position, illustrated in Figure 2. In order to prevent the angle cock on the end of the train from being opened. an aperture, 26, passing through one wall of the plug, admits fluid pressure to the cylinder, and when an operating pressure is maintained in, the train pipes, the piston Specification of Letters Patent. being understood that operates to lock the cock in the same manner that it does'in open position.
Thus angle cocks so equipped cannot be manipulated when an engine is coupled to a train having them and the train pipes charged to standard pressure; the plugs cannot be turned so long as the pressure is normal, and the engineer has complete control of the system. 7
I-Iavingset forth one embodiment of my invention, I do not desire to have it confined closely to the specific structure shown, it changes may be made in form, proportion, and organization of its various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention 'as indicated by the scope of the appended claims WVhat I claim as my invention, to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with an angle cock for train pipes having a rotary plug, means-rotatable with the plug adapted to be operated by fluid pressure in the train pipe for locking the rotary plug of the angle cock from turning.
2. In combination with an angle cock for train pipes having a rotary plug, means rotatable with the plug adapted to be operated and desire by fluid pressure in the train pipe for locking the rotary plug of the angle cock in either opened or closed positions.
3. In combination with an angle cock for train pipes having a rotary plug, a cylinder i on the angle cock below the rotary plug, a piston in said cylinder adapted to be operated in one direction by fluid pressure in the train pipe,means for operating said piston in the opposite direction, and means on said piston adapted to cooperate with said, rotary plug to prevent it from turning under certain conditions of pressure in the train pipe.
4. In combination with an angle cock for train pipes, a rotary plug therefor having a passage therethrough and an aperture through the lower end thereof leading into said passage, a cylinder on said angle cock below said rotary plug and having communication with the passage through the rotary plug by means of the aperture, a piston in said cylinder adapted to be forced down by fluid pressure, a plug in the bottom of the cylinder, a spring under the piston for elevating it, means on the upper side of said piston cooperating with the rotary plug whereby it is turned when the plug is turned, and means on the lower side thereof adapted to cooperate with said cylinder plug to prevent the rotary plug from turning when sufficient pressure is maintained in the train pipel V 5. 11. An angle cock comprising a housing, a
plu therein. a structure on the housing communicating with the plug. a cap closing the structure. exterior of said plug, and means in said structure for locking the plug and cap from movement under certain conditions of fluid pressure in the angle cock.
12. In combination with a valve including a housing, a valve closure member and hand operating means therefor. a structure on the housing communicating with the closure member and provided with a closure plug, and means within the structure for cooperating with the closure member and the plug for preventing their movement under cer tain conditions of fluid pressure in the valve.
