c. J. DEXTER. ADHESlVE-WAFER. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 24, i920- 35410555, Patented Mar. 28, 1922..
CAB/L J. DEXTER, 0F LAFAYETTE, INDIANA.
ADHESEVE WAFER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, i922.
Application led November 24, 1920. Serial No. 426,236.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, Canti d. a citizen of the United States, residing at Lafayette,l in the county of Tippecanoe and State of lndiana, have invented certain new and useful .lmprovements in Adhesive lll-eters, oit which the following is a specilic-ation.
This invention relates to adhesive `waters and more especially to an adhesive water which is intended to be employed in the mounting of photographic prints either upon card mounts or upon the leaves ot an album, although the water is not restricted to this use.
Ordinarily in mounting photographic prints, adhesive is applied to the backof the print either over the entire surface there of or a portion or" the surface, and even where the work is performed in a skillful manner there is liable to be a subsequent curling or warping o the print and the card or sheet upon which it mounted. Also, where photographic prints are mounted in an album, it is desirable at times to remove one or more ot' the prints but where they are mounted in the usual manner it is praetically impossible to accomplish this without either niarring the print or mutilating the leat' upon which it is mounted because ot' the direct union of the surfaces of the print and mount. At the saine time it is ocsirable that a photographic print be so mounted that itv will ret-ain a Hat position upon the surface ot its mount. ln consideration ot the foregoing it is one or the objects ot. the present invention to provide an adhesive wafer which may be conveniently employed in mounting photographic prints or the like and which will serve to retain the mounted print in a tlat condition and will vet not so immovably secure the `print as to result in curling or warping of the print or its mount.
Another object ot the invention is to provide an adhesive wafler for the purpose stated which, while it is adapted to securely mount a print or the like, will nevertheless be so constructed as to permit of the print or the like being readily removed from its mount whenever required without the necessity of mutilating either the print or the mount therefor.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adhesive wafer which may be manufactured at an exceptionally low cost its corners turned back to illustrate tire manner in which the water is arranged prior to the securing oi? this corner,
` Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure l but illustrating the manner in which the print may be removed from the mount without mutilation 5 Figure 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the water is formed;
Figure l is a detail sectional view taken along a diagonal line through the print and its inount and illustiating` the manner in which the wafer is designed to secure the parts together.
ln the drawings the numeral l indicates a photographic print which is to be applied to the surface o'l' a mount 2 which may be inthe nature ot a card or which may be the lea;la ot a photographic album.
The water embodying the invention is indicated in general by the .numeral 3 and the said wafer, as illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings, is to be formed from a rectangular blank of material such for example as paper which blank is preferably of a length equal to substantially twice its width. This blank is provided upon one of its faces with an adhesive coating 4 which extends over the entire area of the face, and after the blank has been prepared, it is to be folded along the dotted lines 5 in Figure 3 so as to produce the completed water. l't will be observed by reference to the said figure that the lines 5 extend from opposite corners of the blank to a point midway between the ends of one longitudinal edge of the blank7 and because of the relative proportions of the width and length of the blank, these fold lines. extend at an angle of forty tive degrees to either longitudinal edge of the blank. While adhesive is applied, as above stated, to one face only of the blank, it will be evident lthat when the blank is folded along the dotted lines 5, the wafer thus produced will have a triangular form and both the faces thereof will present an adhesive surface.V
After the blank has been formed by folding it along the dotted lines 5 so that it assumes the right angle triangular form shown in Figure l of the dra-wings, it is to be moistened upon one side and applied either to the under surface of the print or the upper surface of the mount to which the print is to be secured. In the former instance the closed edges of the mount will be brought into registration with the Inargin defining the selected Vcorner of the print, the open side of the w fer being presented obliquely inwardly. rlhen upon moistening the other `side of the wafer, the print may be laid upon the mount and secured thereto. inasmuch as the contiguous faces of the folded corners and the intermediate portion of the wafer blank are not secured together, the wafer may be extended slightly in the manner of a bellows, and consequently a print which is secured by its four corners through the employment of the wafers, may expand and contract as may also its mount, without producing a warping or other distortion of either the print or mount.V Fun thermore while a print may be secured by its four corners to its mounting surface through the employment of the wafers above described, the print may be readily removed from its mount whenever required by insertinor a knife blade within the pocket of each wafer and slitting each wafer along its diagonal fold lines, as clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings, the folded corners of the wafer blank being left attached tov one of the previously connected members and the intermediate portion of said blank being left attached to the other member.
From the foregoing it will be evident that y by employment of the adhesive wafer eming the print to be mounted firmly in place with one hand upon the face of the mount and then moistening both sides of the wafers and positioning them beneath the corners of the print and subsequently pressing the corners down flat, and itis probable that this mode of application will be found most desirable and convenient.
Having thus describedV the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. An adhesive wafer comprising a rectangular blank of ma length 'substantially equal to twice its width, said blank being folded along diagonal lines extending from the corners at one longitudinal edge to a point bisecting the opposite longitudinal edge thereby providing double layers, the exposed faces having an adhesive coating for pasting two fibrous sheets together, said sheets being separablein intact condition by cutting the wafer along said diagonal lines between said layers.
2. A blank for an adhesive wafer, comprising a rectangular sheet having one entire side covered with an adhesive coating, two adjacent corners being folded together with the uncoated side inward, so as to form a two layered, right angle triangle with both exposed faces coated for pasting two fibrous sheets together, said fibrous sheets being separable in intact condition by cutting the folded edges of the wafer.
ln testimony whereof l ailix my signature.
