To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l/VALTER NORMAN Ton- GERSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Galloway, in the county of l'iflarathon and State of l Wisconsin, has invented new and useful Improvements in liltaple Pullers, of which the following is a specification.

The purpose of the invention is to provide a device adapted for the quick and easy removal of staples in dismantling a wire fence or in other cases where staples are used and it is necessary to remove the same. l urther than providing for the ready removal of the staple, the device is provided with means for holding or retaining the staple so that it may not be thrown on the ground and lost or otherwise putting the operator to inconvenience.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction. durable and effective in operation and inexpensive manufacture and market.

The invention is illustrated and described in a specific embodiment to which, however, it is not to be restricted. The right is reserved to make such changes or alterations as the actual nnluction to practice may sueg 'est, in so far such changes and alterations are compatible in spirit with the annexed claims.

Essentially the invention consists of a shank 1 the free end of which is curved as indicated at this curve then being preferably rectangular or square in cross section while the main portion of the shank is preferably round. The shank at the upper end carries the pyramidal shaped head 3 connected with the shank adjacent the base but disposed a an angle to the shankthat is the axis of the head is at an angle to the axis of the main portion of the shank. to the plane of the staple engaged and thus a relatively long movement of the shank is provided with the. act of withdrawing the staple.

The s sring 5 is secured to the shank adjacent the head and lies yicldably against the under or bottom face of the head, having the deflected bill 6 and a d pression 01" seat T directly behind the bill. In inserting the nose 4- in the staple. the latter will engage the bill and raise the spring to permit the staple being engaged in the seat and after the staple has been withdrawn it will be held on the head by the spring, being easily removed from the latter by withdrmving it over the nose, the spring yielding to provide such withdraw.

The fiat face 8 of the head constitutes a pole by means of which a staple may be driven when so desired and the curved portion 2 of the handle may have its extremity 9 engaged behind a projection or in a suitable improviscd seat formed in the post or in a fence blank, so that a wire may be wra ped around the head and stretched by forcing downward on the shank. the curved portion of the shank forming a gradually changing fulcrum useful in spreading operations.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is l. A tool for the purpose indicated coinprising'a shank, a tapering head carried by the shanl. and a retainer carried by the shank and bearing yieldably against the head. the retainer being provided with a deflected bill and with a staple seat directly behind the bill for the purpose specified.

A. tool for the purpose indicated conipraising a shank, tapering shaped head terminating in a nose. the head being carried by the shank with its axis disposed at an angle to the axis of the latter, and a retainer carried by the shank and bearing yieldably against the under face of the head, the retainer being formed with a deflected bill. disposed. adjacentthe nose of the head and having a seat or depression adjacent said bill.
