To all fecmm t may concern Be it lrnown that l, FREDERICK lil.' Larson, a citizen ot' the United States and residingr at Baltimore city, hlaryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Matrix Holders and Elevators for Typographic Machines,.ot which the itollmving is a specification.
This invention relates to a matrix holder and elevator for tyqiographic machines, particularly machines ot the kind disclosed in my copending applicationk Serial No. 222,760, filed March 15, 1918. oi" which the present application is a division.
The invention relates particularly to the mechanism for receiving the matrices trom the assembler mechanism, presenting them to the mold and atter the casting operation' elevating the same to the position to be transferred to the distributing mechanism. lt is the principal aim ot' the invention to simplify the mechanism employed for accomplishing these results and toprovide a construction which is positive and rapid vin operation and which, it desired, may be easily arranged to produce repeated castings from the same matrix.
The invention in one of its embodiments is set forth in detail in the `following` speciication and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

The mec anism to which the present invention particularly relates, includes a presentation slide 16 which carries lined rails 12, 13 and 15 and a movable rail 111. These rails are adapted to receive the assembled matrices and space bands .trom the assembling mechanism and support the same duri ng the casting operation and while they are elevated as hereinafter pointed out. The presentation slide is arranged to move 'torward and rearward upon guides or ways 1T and the same is also movable vertically in guide-ways 18 formed in suitable standards or rigid portions of the framework ot the machine. The presentation slide when Vin its forward position and withdrawn from the mold 'is adapted to slide vertically in said guideways 18 to carry the matrices to the second elevator and to carry the space bands associated with the matrices to thele vel of the space band magazine as fully set forth in my said prior application, the presentation slide 1 6 thus constituting the lirst elevator. The presentation slide 16 is moved rearward and forward or toward and Yfrom the casting mechanism by two pairs of elbow levers 19 pivoted to a rigid part ot the machine and which have downwardly projecting arms provided with rollers 20 running in guide grooves 21 of said slide 16. The elbow levers also have forwardly extending arms which are connected to cross bars 22 which cross bars are connected by suitable links 23. The elbow levers 19 are rocked to carry the presentation slide rearward and forward by a rod 24C which is operated by a suitable cam mechanism secure( to the main cam shaft of the machine. The detailed mechanism employed for operating said rod Y constitutes no part ot the present invention and description and illustra-tion ot the same is unnecessary. The rod 2a includes a spring linlr 25 otordinary construction, the details of which it is not necessary to illustrate.
It will Vbe understood that as the rod 24; is drawn downwardly the elbow levers will be rocked on their pivots and the presentation slide 16 will be moved rearwardly to bring the matrices against the mold. ln order that the matrices may he brought into exact register with the mold there is provided dowel pins 1la rigidly secured t0 a part of the castingy mechanism which dowel pins are adapted Vto enteropenings 16a in the presentation slide. moved upwardly the presentation slide will he drawn forwardly or away from the mold. The opera-tion of casting the slugs or linotvpes takes place while thc presentation slide carrying the matrices is in its rearward position or against the mold.
l/Vhen it is desired to cast a plurality of slugs or linotypes 'from' a single line ol matrices the rod 24 is prevented from rising;
lto its full extent and the elbow levers 19 are therefore prevented `from withdrawing the presentation slide sufficiently to engage it withthe elevatingdevice hereinafter described. This result is accomplished by interposing a pivoted block 26 in the path of a collar 27 which is secured on the rod 24. This prevents upward movement of the rod 24;, the movement oi the operatingmechanism which causesreciprocation of the krod 24 being taken up, under such condition`V by the spring link 25. vWhen the block 26 is rotated about its pivot point 26"L so as to be out oli' the path of movement ot the collar 27 a single slug' or linotype will be cast trom each line of assembled matrices. The rail la is adapted to support the matrices when it is desired to cast from the lower row of characters usually provided on the matrices and it therefore follows that when this rail is withdrawn in the manner just described the matrices will all be brought to a common level suitable for transfer to the second elevator which is'oii well known type andv which it is unnecessary/to illustrate or describe in the present application, such transfer being effected by suitable transfer mechanism Agenerally designated by the numeral 36.

It .is obvious that various modifications and rearrangements of: the foregoing mechanism may be made without departing` i'rom the spirit of the invention and which is not limited to the particular details of construetion and operation herein described.
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a typographie machine comprising a matrix assembling` mechanism and a easting mechanism. a presentation slide movable horizontally in a straight line toward and from the mold to carry the matrices to and from casting position and movable vertically in a. straight line to deliver the mat rices to the second ele rater. and means for alternately moving` the slide horizontally and vertically. v
2. In a typographie machine having a matrix assr-nnblinginechanisn'i and casting mechanism, a presentation slide having snpports to receive a line of matrices. a stationary `gniideway for said slide, mea-ns for moving said slide to and from the mold, and means for moving said slide vertically on said rnideway when it is away from the mold to raise the matrices into register with the second elevator.
3. In a typographie machine having' a matrix assemblingr mechanism and casting' mechanism, a presentation slide having supports to receive a line of matrices. means tor moving said slide to and from the mold, and
. means vfor moving' said slide vertically when .it is away from the mold to raise the matrices .into register with the second elevator. said latter means comprising a vertically movable -slide having an openingadapted for engagement-with a part or the presentation slide when the latter is with drawn from the casting mechanism.
4. In a typographie machine. the combination with a mold. ot a presentation slide having means tor supporting` a line ot matricos. horizontal ways on which said presentation slide is movable toward and 'from the mold. vertical ways on which said prcsentation slide is vertically movable. and means tor rer.-iproeatinnv said presentation slide horizontally and vertically alternately.
5. In a typographical machine having' matrix assembling mechanism and casting4 mechanism, the combination with a mold. of. a presentation slide havinga means for supporting' a line et matrices. horizontal ways on which said presentation slide is movable toward and trom the mold, vertical ways on which said presentation slide is vertically movable, means Jfor reciprocatinn` said presentation slide horizontally and ver tically alternately and dowel pins and sockets on the mold and presentation slide for bringing the matrices into exact register with the mold when the slide is moved toward the mold.
(i. in a typographif.: machine having matrix assembling' meelfianisnr and casting;` mechanism7 the combination with a mold, of a presentation slide having means for snpporting a line of matrices, vertical grooves in said slide, means operating in said groove for imparting horizontal movement to the slide without restraining vertical movement thereof. and means for moving said slide vertically when it is withdrawn from the mold to carry the matrices to a higher level.
7. In a typographie machine, in eombina tion, a matrix assembling and a. casting;r mechanism, a presentation slide. means for moving the slide horizontally toward and from the mold, and means for moving the slide vertically when the same is withdrawn from the mold, said last named means beine' disengaged from the slide as the same is moved toward the mold by said First named means.
8. In a. typographie machine havingY matriX assembling' mechanism and casting mechanism.. the combination with a mold. ot a presentation slide movable horizontally toward and from the mold, an elevating device with which said slide engages when moved away from the mold. and means for preventing` engagement of the presentation slide with the elevating` device to thereby prevent distribution oil' the matrices and obtain duplicate castings therefrom.
9. In a typographie machine having` matrix assembling` and casting' mechanism, the combination with a mold, of a presentation slide adapted to support a plurality or` matrices. means for moving said slide toward and away from said mold. means for elerating said slide when withdrawn from said mold to the normal degree and means for preventing withdrawal of said slide to the normal degree to thereby prevent distribution of the matrices and obtain duplicate castings therefrom.

In a typographie machine having aV matrix assembling and casting; mechanism, the combination ot a. mold. apresentation slide haa/ing` means for supporting matrices. vertical grooves in said slide. a plurality of bell-crank levers pivoted to the frame of the machine. one end of each of said' levers carryingr a roller arranged to travel. in one oi said grooves, means connected to the other ends of said levers for operatingr the same to move said slide toward and from the mold, and means for moving said slide vertically when it is withdrawn from the mold.
