HARRY E. BRITTENBURG, OF SOUTH ALLEN'I'OWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR RERAILER.
This invention relates to a device for re which they have been derailed, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a simple and efficient device which can be easily stored on a locomotive or a car and which when placed in position adjacent the rails can be used for guiding the car wheels to proper position on the rails.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which can be used for replacing cars on rails when the wheels are close to the sides of the rails and also when they are spaced some distance from the sides, thus reducing to the minimum the cutting up of the ties by the wheels during the rerailing operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the device.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33, Figure 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates an inclined runway in a substantially horizontal portion 2. The sides of the runway and of the horizontal portion 2 are sup ported by parallel walls or webs 3 which can be connected by a cross brace 4. Hand holes 5 can be formed in the walls 3 at opposite sides of the brace 4 to facilitate manipulation of the device.
ledge 6 is extended laterally from one side of the horizontal portion 2 and is so Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 1, 1921.

positioned as to rest upon the head of a rail when the device is pressed against one side of said rail. A channel 7 is extended longitudinally within thetop face of the runway 1 close to portion of the horizontal part 2. A branch channel 9 is provided in the runway 1 and extends from the lower end thereof to the upper portion of the channel 7, the two channels 7 and 9 converging near the top of the runway.
In using this'device the same is placed as near as possible to the wheels of the car to be rerailed and with the ledge 6 resting on the head of the rail adjacent thereto. The channels 7 and 9 are arranged so that one of Y one of the wheels of the car guided by the channels paths thereof so as to move 11 wardly into proper positions on the rails. ghould the wheels of the derailed car be located close to one side of the rails the rerailing devices can be placed against the sides of the rails nearest the wheels so that the wheel flanges can enter either of the channels 7 or 9.
Importance is attached to the fact that the device herein described can b cause of the location of the channels 7.
It is to be understood that the entire device can be formed in one piece of metal.
hat is claimed is:
car rerailer formed in a single piece of metal and including an inclined runway, a. substantially horizontal portion at the upper end of the runway, a laterally extending ledge at one side of said portion, parallel supporting walls under the side edges of the runway and under said horizontal portion, said walls having hand holes. there being the upper face of the runwa adjacent and substantially parallel with one side of the runway and another obliquely disposed channel in the upper face of the run- 2 1 ,eoegaeo way and extending from the lower end thereof upwardly into communication with the first mentioned channel, both of said channels communicating, at the upper end of the runway with an obliquely drsposed channel Within the horizontal portion and. extending within a portion of the ledge, the channels being of uniform width and depth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing 1s 111 y own, I have hereto afi'lxed my signature m 10 the presence of two wltnesses.
