incense.
Application filed July 19,
To all Quiz-m it may concern n Be it known that I, Iionnar BnnTnAM GREY, a subject of the King of the Unlted Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and
residing at London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in or Relating to Mixing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in and connected with mixing apparatus of the vortex type.
In mechanical agitators for mixing liquids, semi-liquids and liquids and solids, of the type where a blade or blades is or are rotated on a vertical shaft and baifle'plates are arranged down the sides of the mixing tank, a large amount of power is wasted in overcoming the resistance offered by the baflle plates to the natural rotation of the liquid induced by the revolving blades.
In my invention these side baflies are dispensed with and a plurality of independently adjustable breakers or bafiies capable of adjustment to individually different depths of immersion in the contents of the mixing tank are arranged on the top of the vessel.
This improved arrangement of breakers or baiiies greatly reduces the power requiredto operate the mixing apparatus and greatly increases the efficiency of the mixing effect. he invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. l is a vertical section andFig. 2 a plan of a. mixing apparatus fitted with the improved arrangement of breakers or baffles.
As shown, the breakers or baffles (threeare shown) each consists of a fiat plate A preferably wider at one end than at the other, said plates being supported by rods B passing through the cover C of the mixing apparatus and connected at their upper ends to form a handle D. 'Ihe rods B are perforated at intervals throughout their length as at E for the insertion of locking-pins F adapted to bear on upstanding lugs G on the cover C so as to permit of supporting each ba-file at various heights within the contents of the tank T. i

shaft L on which are fitted fast and loose pulleys MN. embraced by a belt '(not shown) which is connected to a. suitable; prime mover. The action of the breakers or bafiies A breaks up the surface tension continuous streams are returned into the vortex and an agitating effect is setup By reference to Fig. 2 it will be understood that'the bellies, which arejadjustably supported by the cover of the tank, are widelyseparated fromthe sides of the tank, instead of being closely adjacent to the sides of the tank as heretofore; so that the waste of power in the operation of the mixer, here inbefore referredto, is avoided by the present improved arrangement of the battle plates.
It has been found by experiment that by ad ustment to different depths of the various battles the agitating ormixing effect of the The depth whole device can be increased.
of immersion is varied according to the difference in specific gravities of thematerials under treatment. 7 j
i The tank '1 is preferably provided with an inverted conical bottom and the propeller or stirrer H, which is attached to the lower end of the vertical shaft I, is arranged to rotate horizontally within the chamber of the pan aiforded by said conical bottom,'so that an outward and upward flow of the liquid which is being agitated is induced when said propeller or stirrer is in oper- The fast and loose pulleys are i of the contents whereby ation. This fiow'of the liquid is intercepted by the battles A in the upper part of the mixing chamber, so that the said bafiles cooperate with the said rotating propeller or stirrer in the mixing operation. These baffies A have outwardly and upwardly inclined lower edges to induce an inward and downward flow of the liquid to assist in the outward and upward flow of the liquid induced by rotating the propeller or stirrer.
Although I have shown an arrangement for manual independent adjustment of the battles it is clearthat the battles maybe adjusted independently of one another by mechanioal'means.
I claim: V
1. In a mixing apparatus, the combination with a tank provided with a cover, of battles adjustably supported by said cover and depending therefrom into the upper v 7 part of the chamber of said tank, said baf-v the tank and consisting of fiat plates the lower edges of which are above the vertical middle part of the said tank.
2. In a mixing apparatus, the combination with a tank provided with a cover, of bafiie-s adjustably supported by said cover and depending therefrom into the upper part of the chamber of said tank, said baflies being widely separated from the sides of the tank and consisting of flat plates which are so arranged as to be widely separated from the walls of the tank, said plates having outwardly and upwardly inclined lower edges.
3. In a mixing apparatus, the combination with a tank, of a cover on said tank, a propeller rotatable in said tank, a plurality of baflies in said tank, said baffles presenting plane surfaces, pairs of supporting rods connected to said battles and extending through said cover, said rods being each provided with a series of spaced perforations, a handle connecting the rods of each pair above said cover, and locking pins adapted for nsertion in selected perforations so as to sustain said batlles at selected elevations.
4. In a mixing apparatus, the combination with a tank provided with a cover and having an inverted conical bottom, of a vertical shaft, a horizontally arranged stirrer attached to the bottom of said shaft and ro tating horizontally within the chamber of said bottom, and baflies adjustably sus pended from said cover and disposed in the upper part of the chamber of the said tank and with which baffles said stirrer cooperates.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
