PATENT OFFICE..
FRANCIS S. INCO, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
` coNoEALABnn BED.
Application sied April e,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANCIS S. Inco, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a` new and useful Concealable Bed, of which the following is a specification. Thisinvention relates to the manufacture 0f beds which are adapted to be foldedI and concealed when noty desired for use, and particularly relates to the design of concealable bedssuitable for use in rooms in which there has not been provided built in means of concealment.
. It is an object of this invention to provide a folding bedwhich` may be incorporated as a part of an article of furniture which 'will have a certain utility of its own and which will furnish a concealing means for the folded bedand may be easily moved to allow the bed to be unfolded 'and prepared for sleeping purposes. y y
It is a further object of my invention to provide a bed which will fold into a minimum of'space in ordery that the enclosing l* n angles l35 is a head frame 38.
article of furniture maybe of va reasonable size and shape, and also to provide for the concealment, of articles of bedding when the bed is'v folded.
Other objects will be made evident in the following description and the accompanying drawings.
With reference to the drawings which are for illustrative purposes only:
Fig. l is a front elevation of an varticle of furniture adapted to inclose a folding bed embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on a plane represented by the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross section takenon a plane represented by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section taken on a plane represented by the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is an end view of the bed in the first stage of being unfolded from its position when in concealment. Y
Fig. 6 is a side view of the bed entirely unfolded.
Fig. 7 is 'a partial plan view of the bed when unfolded.
An article of furniture particularly adapted to the concealment of such a folding bed as I provide is a davenport 11 which is constructed to provide a compartment 12 in the back thereof, and having arms 13 of a hollow wall eenstruction to provide co1n- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 7, 1922.
1921. Serial No. 458,885.
partments 14 to receive the forward portion l5 of the'supporting frames 21. The folding bed 19 which I employ is supported upon a carriage 20 formed of supporting members 21, preferably Of metal tubing bent to thefdcsiredshape, andin which support ingmembers are placedfcastcrs 22 to pro? vide formoving the bed about. r'Across the supporting membersv 21 are placed lower cross-bars 23 and upper cross-bars 24 which are reinforced by vertical bars 25,"an`d the 'i Carfmge S Completed by a lateral member 26 which connects between the points of vjuncture of the cross-bars '23 and the vertical members 25 and'is suitably reinforced by diagonal braces 27 and 28. i
The bed 19 is comprised of a head'section 30 and a foot section Sljoined together by link meinbersu32.V The head section 30 is composed of longitudinal members 33 connected at the head thereof by a' cross-bar "i" 1.34, 'and verticallymounted at the head are 'upright angles 35 reinforced by diagonal bars 36.l
The 'Y foot section Slisv composed of longiftiidinal members 40 connected at the vfoot thereof kby a cross-bar 41, and joined tot the the bed is in extended position as shown-in p Fig. 6, the legs 48 extend vertically and support the central portion of the bed. Upon folding up the foot section 31, as shown in Fig. 5, the action of the link 47 bringsthe legs into a retracted position 49. K
Connecting between points 50 on the head frame 38 and lugs 51 mounted on the crossbar 24 .of the carriage are links 52 which control the position of the head frame and provide for its retention in a vertical position.
It will be noticed when the foot section of the bed is folded, as shown in Fi 5, that a space 60 in which the mattress o the bed may be retained, yis enclosed' by ythe members forming the bed.- Also a compartment 65 is provided in the davenport 11 for the other articles of bedding; the seat 66 of the davenport being hinged 67 so that it may be swung back as indicated by the dotted lines 68 to provide ease of access to the compartment 65.
From the position shown in Fig. 5, the bed 19 may be swung back around the pivot 46, as indicated by the arrow 707 and assumes a position as indicated at 71 in Figs. 2 and 3. The bed in this position may then be concealed-by `the davenport 11 and will occupy the compartment 12 thereof and the forward portion 15 of the frames 21 will be contained within the compartments 14 provided therefor. Also the head frame 38 will have assumed a position as indicated at 75 and the end portion 76 of the foot section will be enclosed by the head frame 38, thereby being prevented from swinging out and allowing the mattress -to slide from the space 60 provided for same.
A cross bracing member 77 to reinforce between the link members 32`is shaped `to provide a clearance beneath the spring 78 of the bed, and is Vpivotally mounted at 79 on 'the link members so that it may be swung back into the confines of vthe `link members, when the bed is folded, as shown in Fig. 2. I `claim as my invention: 1. In a 1concealalble bed; the combination of; a davenport; arms formed on either end of said davenport, a cavity'being provided in the back of said davenport extend` ing into said arms; and a bed of such size that lit may be concealed in saidcavity.
y 2. `In a concealable bed, the combination of a davenport; arms on `either end of said davenport, a cavity being provided in the back of said davenport extending into said arms; a wheeled structure fitting inside said cavity; and a folding bed carried by said structure.
3. In a concealable bed, the combination of Va davenport; arms on either end of said `davenport; a cavity being provided 1n the back of said .davenport extending into said arms; a wheeled structure fitting inside said cavity; a jointed bed carried by said structure and adapted to `be folded to enclose the mattress and bed clothes; retractile legsV 5. In a concealable bed, the combination of a davenport; arms on either end of ,said davenport, a cavity beingprovided inthe back of said davenport; a wheeled structure fitting `inside said cavity; a jointedbedicarried by said structure andadapted to be folded to enclose the mattress` `and bed clothes;v retractile legs carried by said bed;
and means for so mounting said bed on said structure that .it may Vbe swung on edge tov enter said cavity.
`In testimony whereof ,TI have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles,v California;
this 31st day of March, 1921;
