UNITED STATES PA ENT OFFICE.
cm W. Jones, or ST. PAUL, JLIINNESOTAL- SAFETY RAZOR. -1
To allwhomz'tmay concern: I
. Be it known that I, CHARLES .W. 'J ONES, a citizen-of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Safety Razor, of
, vention.
which the following is a specification. This invention relates the hoe shaped type.
The ob 'ect of"the invention is to a razor of this character having a two edged blade with an unsharpened extension at one end to permit the blade to be handled without danger of cutting the fingers. a Y
Another object is to provide a one-piece frame, for a razor of this character having an offset handle positioned so that the users fingers will not come in contact with the lather.
Another object is to provide a safety razor frame having guards so constructed and arranged, that while protecting the blade, they will have a tendency to stretch the skin before the blade reaches the hair, so that a close shave may be obtained. A
Another object is to so construct such a razor that it may be sterilized by dipping it in hot water, it being necessary to. wipe off the blade only. v
Another object-is to so construct such a razor that it will cut witha slicing instead of a scraping movement."
Another, object is to provide such a razor, the blade of which is held firmly in place by bending thereof and insertion of its ends under lugs on the holder.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the razor constructed in accordance with this in- Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof with parts broken out; and
' Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated the razor constituting this invention comprises a holder and a blade having cooperating means for detachably connectin'g'them. The holder is composed of a plate 1 slightly curved longitudinally and having extended at right angles from its rear face at one end an edgewise disposed plate 2 preferably made integral therewith. This piate 2 may be used as a hand grip by person'swho desire to operate the razor in that manner.
to a safety razor of O provide- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, :28, 1922 'Applicatlon filed April 21, 1920. Serial No. 375,560.
The plate 2 is provided with a rearwardly PIOjBCtlDg longitudinal extension 3 preferably formed integral with the plate 2' at 8.
point intermediate the height thereof. This extenslon 3 provides an offset handle so that the fingers of the user will not come in contact with the lather on his face while shavmg.
The front face of the body member or plate 1 of the holder has a rib .5 extending transversely thereof midway its ends and is designed as a support for the razor blade 8 to assist in holding said blade under tension when inserted in the holder, said rib cooperating with inturned lugs 6 atthe opposite ends of the holder under which the ends of the plate 8 are inserted as is shown clearly in Fig. 2. I
The blade 8 which is composed of thin sheet steel has its opposed side edges sharpened for cutting purposes and is provided at its rear end at one corner with a longitudinal extension and the edges of which are unsharpened, so that it may be used for han-- dling the blade and prevent all danger of cutting the users fingers. This extension 9 also operates as a stop for limiting the inoperates with a notch 10 formed in the other end of the blade and'which engages the lug 6 at the front end of the holder.
The notch 10 and the extension 9 are preferably so formed that when the blade 8 is inserted as is shown in Fig. 2, the cutt' edges thereof will be positioned at a slightly oblique angle, so that the razor will cut with a slicing, instead of a scraping motion.
When the blade 8 is applied to the holder it is bent longitudinally to conform tothe curvature of the face of the plate 1 and the ends thereof are inserted under the lugs 6 so that the intermediate portion of the blade bearing on the rib 5, will'cause said blade to be held under tension on the holder and:
sertion of the blade under the lugs 6 and coplaced is prevented. It will be seen that the handle or finger 9 of this blade will greatly 2 facilitate the handling thereof 'without danwiped dry is the steel blade 8.
ger of cutting the users fingers.
The holder of this razor is preferably constructed of aluminum and constitutes a onescribed the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.
What is claimed is:
A safety razor comprising a longitudinally curved plate equipped with bars at its opposite edges, rubber tubes covering said bars, each bar being unconnected at one end to permit its rubber tube to be slidden on and ofi, a handle secured to said plate, and blade receiving means carried by the front face of said plate.
'In testimony whereofI afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
