The plugs 36 are so constructed, each with a wide ward37 and a narrow ard 38, that they may be sed either as locking members from plate 30 through or as idlers. Referring to Figure 6, the plugs with the wide wards 37 lowest are looking tumblers, while'those in a relatively inverted position are idlers. This relation can be changed at .will. In otherwords, the combination can be changed whenever desired, by simply changing the plugs that present their wide wards 37 opposite to plate 27 when not under pressure from the; pins 40 of key 17. The number of possible permutations is very great. The springs 34 and the pockets 33 and the holes 35 are all equally serviceable whether wards 37 .or wards 38 are" nearest to plate 30. The location of pins or studs 44 neednot be changed no matter what combination is arranged, but plate 30 bearing the'same' can be turned around, so as to make them apply.
lVhen the combination is changed, thepins 40 on key 17 must be changed, so astofit the new combination. Speaking from. the standpoint of the factory, each lock will originally be sent out with. a combination different from all or many others, andthere will be furnished with each lock a key having its pins 40 so set asto fit that lock.

The combination of a casing having a plurality of sleeves or collars, areciprocable locking-member located therein and bearing a rack, a rotatable memberlocated therein and bearing teeth adapted-to engage the said rack and to reciprocate the said lookingmember whenthe said rotatable member is rotarily reciprocated, a central arbor in fixed'relation tothe said casing, a casing in fixed relation to the said rotatable member and containing a notched'plate, a pair of plates in fixed relation to the saidarbor, a plurality of ward-bearing members located between the said plates, some of'the said wards being in looking engagement with the said notched plate, and a key adapted to release thesaid lockingengagement, there being holes in oneotl the said plates for the insertion of the'said key, and the said key bearing pins adapted to pass through the said holes, and a dust plate adaptedto'cover the said holes from the admissionof dust and mounted to be rotated to uncover the said holes for the insertion of the said key.

The combination of a casing having a plurality of sleeves or collars,a reciprocable locking member located therein and bearing a rack, a rotatable member located therein and bearing teeth adapted to engage the said rack and to reciprocate the said locking member when the said rotatable member is rotarily reciprocated, a central arbor in fixed relation to the said casing, a casingin fixed relation to the said rotatable member and containing a not'chedplate, a pair of plates in fixed 'relationto the said'arbor, a plurality or ward-bearing members located be tween the said plates, some of the said Wards being in lockingengagement with the said notched plate, and a key adapted to release'the said locking engagement, one of the said. plates having holes for the inserplates in fixed relation to m i i 8 tion of the said key, and the said key hearing pins adapted to pass through the said holes, andone otthe said lates having guides for the said key, and a dustplate adapted to cover the said holes from the admission dust and mounted to be rotated to uncover the said holes for the in sertion of the said key, and the said dustplate having slots through which the said guides project. The combination of a casing having a plurality of sleeves or collars, a reciprocable locking member located therein and bearing a rack, a rotatable member located therein and bearing teeth adapted to engage the said rack and to reciprocate the said locking member when the said rotatable member is rotarily reciprocated, a central arbor in fixed relation to the said casing, a casing in fixed. relation to the said rotatable member and containing a notched plate, a pair of plates in fixed relation to the said arbor, a plurality of ward-bearing members located between the said plates, some of the said wards being in locking engagement with the said notched plate, and a key adapted to release the said locking engagement, one of the said pairs of plates containing pockets and the other holes, and the said ward-bearing members having projections adapted to slide therein, the said ward-bearing members being invertible, whereby the same may be converted from non-engaging to engaging members and vice versa, the diameter of the said wards being larger than that of the said holes and pockets.

The combination of a casing having a plurality of sleeves or collars, a reciprocable locking member located therein and bearing a rack, a rotatable member located therein and bearing teeth adapted to engage the said rack and to reciprocatev the said locking member when the said rotatable member is rotarily reciprocated, a central arbor in fixed relation to the said casing, a casing in fixed relation to the said rotatable member and containing a notched plate, a pair of plates in fixed relation to the said arbor, a plurality of ward-bearing members located between the said plates, some of the said wards being in locking engagement with the said notched plate, a key adapted to release the said locking engagement, one of the said pairs of plates containing pockets and the other holes, and the said ward-bearing members having projections adapted to slide therein, the said ward-bearing members being invertible, whereby the same may be converted from non-engaging to engaging members and vice versa, spacing-screws by which the equaling the distance necessary to be maintained between the said pair of plates.
