Specification of Letters Patent. Pat-gute@ Peil 21, 192% Application filed. December 30,1920. Serial No. 434,058.
To all 'zo hom t may concern Be it known that I, OLAF Noimo, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Vinding and 4Sharpening Apparatus, of which Athe following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a Specification, like numerals on the drawings representing like parts.
.In my present invention I have devised a portable lathe, or winding device, having detachable portions so that it can be` readily packed, transported,'set up and operated, together with a combined fly wheel and sharpening element. In many lines of wiring and pipe work, it is often necessary to wrap pipes with insulating material, these pipes being secured so closely along the walls, ceilings, or corners, as to be difiicult of handling. As the wires, cords or the like used to secure the insulating material come in large balls, which are too large to be passed round and round the piping, it is customary and it is necessary to wind the same on long spindles, usually wooden cores, which has heretofore been done by hand. In such work also the cutting and fitting of the insulating material, using hair felt asbestos, magnesia or the like, constantly and quickly -dulls the operators knives, and consequently these must be continually sharpened during a days work.
In my present invention I have combined a portable hand operated reel or winding apparatus adapted to fit and hold a wooden core or spindleand on which I wind the wire, cord or string to be used, and also employ a grinding medium which is so fitted and positioned as to constitute the iiy wheel or balance wheel ofthe reel.
Referring to the drawings .illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a side view Y Fig. 2 is a crosssectional view on the line Adapted to be.
removably connected in said groove, for eX- ample the groove 2 at one end of the boaid 1, is a slide 4 and a standard 5, the latter carrying journal bearings for a set of gears 5 and 7 with the axle 8 of the upper gear extending outwardly to receive a crank 9 and handle 10, the axle 11 of the lower gear extending inwardly, and carrying a combined Hy wheel and grinding element 15, secured between collars or washers 16 and 17, and a retaining n ut 18. The shaft 11 preferably extends therethrough and is arranged to receivea removable center 20 fitted in a. slot in the shaft and held in vposition by a cotter pin 21. This center is adapted to take hold of the core or spindle 25 at this end. The entire wheel, gear and crank are supported on the slide 4: and the latter can be moved into position and held rigidly therein by manipulation of a set screw 26. At the other end of the base 1 a similar sliding member 30 ca rries a post 31 having therein a threaded bushing 32 through which a threaded shaft 33 constituting the other center for the spindle or core 25 is iitted. A nut 34 may lock this shaft in position, which shaft is fitted with a hand wheel 35 for ready manipulation. The slide 30 and block 31 may be fitted toward or from the work to give a quick and ready adjustment for the length of spindle 25 to be operated upon, in addition to the adjustment afforded by the thrust or retraction of the center shaft 33. In order to readily hold the block 31 inrposition, I may fit a headed bolt 36 through the same, having the head 37 housed within a groove 39 in the base of the plate 1, so as to be flush therewith and fit a wing nut 40 on the uppermost portion, thus serving to clamp the block 31 wherever desired. Both the slides i and 30 aie readily removable and can then be folded into a compact bundle, lengthwise of the plate 1 andl the entire apparatus transported and cariied by hand from place to place as desired. It can be iiistantlyset up, the slide l fitted in position, the set screw 25 tightened to hold the same and the handle 10 operated to actuate the gearing and the grinder 15. When it is desired to reel on the cord, wire or string from the balls in which they come to the spindles or cores 25, the block 31 is fitted, a wooden spindle 25 positioned, the block 31 adjusted and the shaft 33 also positioned until the spindle 25 is held in rotatable engagement.
and starting the reeling action the same con-v tinues automatically.
In order to simplify the arrangement of the adjustable center, I have shown in Fig. 4 a modified form, wherein the adjustable block 31 is bored and instead of ittinga threaded bushingtherein, a plain shaft 44 is supplied, having thereon ahead 45 and a coiled contractile spring 46, With one end secured in the block 81 as shown at 47, and the other end attached to the head 45v as shown tends to hold the shaft 44 into engagement Vunder the tension of the spring 46 with the spindle 25. A simple longitudinal movement oi the shaft 44 outwardly against the tension of the spring 45 serves to remove` or to position the spindle 25 and upon release thereof the spring 46 will hold the center 44 in operative and spindle holding position.
It Will be seen that my apparatus is portable, can be instantly used as a reel for any suitablelength of spindle, While the y Wheel 15 is also a grinder and operators can sharpen the knives which get dulled so Y port at theother end of said base carrying an adjustable center for the reel and aj combined fiy Wheel and grinder mounted on the live center.
'2. Portable reeling and grinding apparatus of the kind described, comprising a base, a removable support at one end of said basecarrying a grinding' medium mounted on a live center and means toirotate the same, in combination with a removable and adjustable support mountedat the other end oi the base and provided With a spring pressed center adjustably mounted therein.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specication.
