Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I. YGNACIO OASSIANO, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION HAT-BRIIVIS.
Specification forming. part of Letters Patent No. 140,615, dated July 8, 1873; application filed March 29, 1873.
CASE B.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, I. YGNAoIo GAssmNo, of San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Extension Hat-Brim, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists of an annular extension-brim of cloth, sewed onto the outer edge of the permanent brim, with foldingarms for extending it, which are mounted on sliding arms for moving them out or in for extending the brim more or less, and elastic straps on the extension-brim, in combination with the sliding extension, to control the extension-brim when not wholly extended. The sliding extension-arms have springcatches combined with them in such manner as to hold them in any position to which they may be adjusted.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat with my extension-brim fully extended. Fig. 2 is partly a plan view of the under side with the brim folded up, and partly a horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a plan view ofthe hat with the extension-brim partly extended in full lines, and wholly extended in dotted lines. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section of a plan ot' the under side with the brim partly extended in full lines and wholly in dotted lines, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of Fig. i on the line Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is the crown, and B the brim, of the or dinary hat. O is a ring of metal or other substance Iitted in the crown of the hat at the base, and secured in any approved way. D
represents radiating arms attached to this ring and extending under the brim B to its outer edge, or nearly so. E is the annular ring of cloth or other substance, sewed at its inner edge to the outer edge of the brim B. F is the elastic cord attached to the outer edge by clips G. H represents the folding extension-arms for extending the brim E, and M, hooks on the stationary arms near the base ot' the crown, for holding the extension-brim when folded up.
As thus far described the arrangement is similar to that described in my application (case A) for a patent for extension hat-brims, filed herewith, but for having a variable extension-brim, which the invention described in the aforesaid application does not exhibit. I now propose to make the stationary arms hollow or tubular, and t extension-arms K in them, so as to slide in and out, and hinge the folding branched extension-arms H to them, so that they can be shoved out more or less to extend the brim E accordingly, and I have the elastic straps`L extending across the brim E, and sewed to it and to the outer edge of brim B, so as to pull back against the braces and keep them under the proper tension, also to gather the cloth when not wholly extended and keep it under proper control, both when partly extended and when folded back on the brim B, and held by the hooks M, as shown in Fig. 2, by the connection of the clips G with theln when the arms H are detached from said clips, which have sockets in which the outer ends ofthe branched arms H fit, and by which they are engaged with the hooks when the brim is folded back.
A spring-catch, P, is arranged with the tubular extension-arms to engage the sliding arms K iu notches to hold them whenever they are adjusted. f
By the use Yof these sliding extension-arms I can have an extension-brim about twice as wide as the permanent one, which I 'cannot well do without said sliding extension-arms, because the permanent arms cannot be allowed to extend beyond the edge of the permanent brim, and folding extension-arms long enough to extend so wide a brim could not well be disposed of when the brim is folded back.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination ot' an extension -brim, E, and extension devices for varying the extension with the permanent brim of a hat, substantially as specified.
2. The folding extensionarms H, mounted on sliding extension-arms K, substantially as specified.
3. The combination ot' the elastic straps L with the extension-brim E and the sliding exv tension-arms K, substantially as specified.
I. YGNAGIO UASSIANO. Witnesses:
LEONARDO GARZA, WM. H. YOUNG.
