To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST C. SPRINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinding and Polishing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for grinding and polishing cultivator disks, culA tivator shovels, different kinds of tools, etc.. and my object is to provide a new and useful machine of this character whereby cultivator disks and shovels of different sizes can be quickly ground and polished and tools read-` ily and accurately sharpened.
In order that the invention may be readily understood, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

.Referring now to the various parts in detail, 2 designates any suitable grinding` wheel consisting of emery or other abrasive material. Said grinding wheel 2 is ixedly mount ed upon a drive shaft 4 j ournaled in the upper ends of standards 6 and provided with a Small iixedly mounted pulley 7 adapted to` .safety guard 11 supported by a bracket 18 from one of the standards .6, covers a portion of the grindingwheel 2. v Y
The large pulley 10 is iixedly mounted upon a shaft 14 whichl may be manuallyvdriven by a crank 16, when other power is not avail,-
able for driving the pulley 7. The shaft 14 l is journaled in the upper ends of standards 20 and provided with a -x'edly mountedl bevel gear 22', whichr drives a bevel gear 24 fixed upona shaft 26 arranged. at an angle to the shaft 14 and journaled in the upper ends of standards 28. f
The shaft 26 is provided with a smalliixedly mounted pulley 80, which drives a large pulley 82 through the intermediacy of a belt 34. The large pulley 32 is iixedly` mounted upon a counter shaft 36 j'ournalcd.

rlhe bushing .70 is adapted to proj ect through the axial opening B in the cultivator disk A and thus holdsaid disk in concentric relation to the shaft 68. The disk A is firmly held upon the bushing 70, so that it will rof tate therewith, by means of a clamp member i 75 which fits freely over the outer end of the shaft 68 and is forced into engagement with the adjacent side of the disk A by la nntx74 threaded upon the outer end of the shaft 68.
The clamp member 75 is provided with a Y plurality of thumb screws 7 6, which cc-aet with said clamp member '75 in holding the disk A in proper axial position upon the bushing 7 0.
Y The shaft 68 is provided with a fixedly mounted cog wheel 78, which is driven by a pinion 8O fixedly mounted upon a short shaft 82, connected at one end to a universal coupling 84 driven by'an extensible shaft consisting of members 86 and 88. rlChe member 86 is slidably mounted in the tubular meniber 88 which is journaled in bearings "90 on a bracket'92 secured by bolts 94 to the underside of the slidable head 48. rElie shaft member 88 drives the member 86 'through a groove-and-feather connection 96 and is provided with a xedly mounted bevel gear 98,
which is driven byva pinion 100 slidably mountedupon the shaft 36 and driven thereby through the inteimediacy of a groove- Y and-feather connection 102.
1/Vhen it is desired to stop the disk A. without stopping the grinding wheel 2, the pinion 100 is thrown out of engagement with the large bevel gear 98 as disclosed by dotted lines Fig. 1, through the interinediacy of a shift lever 104 having a shank 106 pivotally mounted upon the shaft 36 at a point between the hub of the pinion 100 and a collar 108 adjustably rsecured to the shaft 36 by a set screw 110. The shift lever 104 is held iii either Lof its adjusted posit-ions by engaging its shank 106 against either side of a fork 110, fixed to one eiidof an arm 114 formed integral with the bracket 92.
The disk is moved in and out of engagement with the grinding wheel 2 by swinging the yoke 60 upon the bolt 64.? through the interinediacy of an arm 116, which is secured by suitable means such as screws 118 to lugs 120 integral with said yoke 60.
The arm 116 is controlled by a hand lever 121 pivotally mounted upon the bolt 64 and provided with a handle 122. Said lever 121 is provided with a pivotally-mounted niember 124 through the upturned end of which a rod 126 freely extends, said rod being connected at one end to the arm 116 and provided at its opposite-threaded end with wing nut 128, whereby the arm 116 may be adjusted toward or away from the member 124 to tension a coil spring 130 interposed between the upturned end of said member 124 and a washer 132 mounted on the rod 126 and bearing against the arm 116.

1n addition to the mechanism above described for sharpening and polishing disks of different sizes,'1 also provide means for grinding drill bitsv and other tools as hereinafter described. 146 designates a bracket adjustably secured by bolts 148 to a web 150 uniting the standards 6. The upper portion of said bracket 146 is provided with a tool 'rest 152 adjustably secured in place by a bolt 154 extending through a slot 156 in the upper portion of the bracket 146. By loosening the bolt 154 the tool rest 152 can be adjusted toward or away from the grinding wheel 2. The tool rest 152 is provided at i'ts upper surface with a guide 158 for holding certain kinds of tools as drill bits l) in proper relation to the periphery of the grinding wheel 2. A
r1`he operation briedy stated is as follows: r1`he slidable head 48 is adjusted longitudinally of the bars 40 t'o accommodate disks of different diameters to insure their margins 'being brought opposite the periphery of the grinding wheel 2. The bracket 54 is then adjusted in the head 48 to move the disk A laterally in proper relation to the grinding wheel 2, the universal coupling 84 and the members 86 and 88 of the extensible shaft readily yielding to permit of such adintermediacy of the shaft 4 which is driven either from the pulley 7, or Vthe shaft 14 through the intermediacy of the rpulleys 8' and 10 and the belt 12. Rotary motion is imparted to the disk from the shaft 14VV through the intervening gearing which is, preferably, proportioned to drive said diskA A at a slower speed than the grinding wheel 2, so that the grinding operation maybe rapid and uniform. As the disk A. is yieldably held in engagement with the grinding wheel 2 through the intermediacy of the spring 30 and associated parts, said disk A is free to swing laterally due to any irregularities in its margin and hence no damage will be caused to saiddisk A or the grinding wheel 2. The universal coupling and the eX- tensible shaft consisting of the members86 and 88, readily yield and accommodate themL selves to such lateral movement of the disk A, and continue to drivethe same through the intervening gearing above described. After the disk A has been sharpened the set screw 134 is disengaged by the segment 136,

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a machine of the character described, a grinding Wheel, means for driving said grinding Wheel, means for yieldably holding a disk in engagement With said grinding wheel to permit lateral movement of said disk during the grinding operation, a universal coupling, an extensible shaft associated With said vuniversal coupling-and the disk to drive vthe latter'and'permit lateral movement thereof, and means for driving said extensible shaft.
2. In a mechanism of the character described, means for sharpening a disk, arotary support for said disk, an adjustably mounted yoke in which said rotary support is mounted, manual means yieldably connected to said yoke to adjust the same and cause it to move the disk in or out of engagement vviththe sharpening means, means for securing said manual means vat'any point of its adjustment, a spring interposed between said manual means and thejyoke so that the same may yield under inequalities in the disk surface being sharpened, a member associated With the yoke and the manual means to effect longitudinal adjustment of the rotary disk support, and a movablehead carrying said member to effect lateral adjustment of the rotary disk support.
