SHINGLE GAUGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. '7, 1922.
Application filed May 9, 1921. Serial No. 468,147.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVEN BoNNnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing atMadison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shingle Gauges, of which the following is a specification. 7 My invention relates to, gauges for holding fibre shingles in place preparatory to nailing; and the objects of my invention are, first, to construct a small and compact tool for the purpose that is convenient to carry in the tool box or pocket; second, to have it a time saver and practical; and third, to have it of low price and durable.
I attain these objects by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1, is a plan;
Fig. 2, is a side elevation;
Fig. 3, is a plan as applied to actual use;
Fig. 4, is a longitudinal section on line AB Fig. 3.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The bar or handle 1, is preferably of hard wood, and has a block 2, also of hard wood secured to the lower side and end thereof. A thin resilient blade 3, somewhat narrower than the block is disposed centrally from a point adjacent the lower end of same, to a distance beyond the upper end and parallel to the handle 1, and is secured by rivets 4;.
A thin flat spring 5,, is secured to the under .side of the upper end of the handle 1, by rivets 6, or any equivalent means, and ex-,
tends a distance beyond the end and also a distance below the rivets over the blade 3, I I
and is curved at the center to lightly contact blade 3. A slotted spacing gauge 7, is located over the upper end of the handle and extends downward along the top and can be secured in position by the clamping screws 8.
To use my device force the blade under the last course of shingles 9, until the end of the block 2, abuts the lower ends of same,
and lay the next course on top of the spring 5, with the buts resting against the slotted spacing gauge 7.
claim I In a shingle gauge, the combination of a handle provided with a block at one end, with a resilient blade secured to the block andv handle, a fiat spring curved adjacent one end to engage the blade, and a slidable spacing gauge disposed on the top and at one end of the handle with means for $801.11: ing the spacer in. position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature Having thus described my invention, I
in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
:IRVEN BONNELL.
