Description

C. E. EDGE.
PROTECTIVEDEVICE.
I APPLICATION FILED OCT. 15, 1921.
I Patented Jan. 31, 1922.
.UNITED :ST.A-TES crIARLns-nRnEsT EDGE, on ROCKY ivrouiv'r; no membrim; f
I mrnorncrivnnnvrcnt To all whom it may 0mm! t .7 Beit known that I, CHARLEs'EJ-EDGE, a citizen, of the United States, residing at Rocky Mount, in the county of Edgecombe and State of North Carolina, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protective Devices; and I do hereby declare that the followingv is afull, clear, concise, and exactdescription of the'same, such-as will enable others skilled in the art to which.
it appertains to make and use the same.
to provide a protective device for preventing the inter inhalation of breath as between a dentist and patient, whereby to avoid dis-v agreeable conditions, at times occasioned thereby, and also, to protect either or both the dentist and patient from infection; or
diseases, often times resulting therefrom as for illustration, the prevention of passage of tubercular germs from one of {the persons to 'theother. v v :7 i Itis also an object of the invention to provide adevice of-the character mentioned.
which can have the intake nozzle thereof adjustedto variouspositions whereatit will effectually function, and yetf, will, not i be troublesome to or hinder thedentistin. his
work upon a patient Other objects will: bein part obvious and in art pointed out hereinafter.
11 order that the invention and its mode of operation maybe readily understoodcby' cabinet.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which" like characters of reference will designate corres'ponding parts throughout, my improved device consists of an ornamental form of cabinet 1 which may be constructed of wood, metal, or various other material such as conditions or'preference may dictate and fin ished or otherwise decorated as may be desired. An opening 2 is formed in oneslde of the cabinet and is adapted-to be closed I I Specification of Letters Patent: 31", Application filed october 15, 1921 Serial-No. 508,032. r
- by a horizontally swingableldoor Shaving a latch .4: thereon adapted to engage' ith a suitable form of'keeperadjacent one side of said doorway 2. Thus, it will be understood that access maybe had to the interior of the. cabinet 1 andif desired, a plurality" of superposed "shelves 5 may be arranged within the. same fOrFreceivi'ngvarious articles'. Casters or rollers Gmay be and pref erably arearranged uponthe various corner andreceives thereonothe inner end'ofa flexible conduit 9-, which1 as will be noted, passes through a recess-providedtherefor in'xthcl adjacent portion of theside wallof the cabinet, from whence: it is extended into connection with such fan'orvan air pump 10, saidpump, being preferably arranged in thelaboratory-of a user or'at a point whereatf 2 portions of the lower end of the cabinet]. i This invention relates to improvements in dentists accessorles, having for-an object it will be inconspicuous. In this connection, I
it, is to be noted-that a-bag or other :receptacle 1,1;is-,interposed as between theTc10n-1 duit 9 and the pump: 1Q and by consequenoe matter pasing through the conduit underinfiuence of. the suction created therein by the pump 10 will be deposited in the bag.
Of course, the, bag is removable in order that it maybe emptied o'rreplaced by a clean as maybecome necessary.
ba A otatably connected to the free portion of the elbow 8 is a corresponding or substantially'rightfangular fitting 12 having the free end thereof formed to rotatably receive. an extension conduit 13, the outer end which as will be noted, has rotatable connection with the same. This fitting 14 carries a l nozzle 15'upon its outer end which is adaptthrough, to'prevent the inter inhalation of. breath as betweenthe dentist or a patient, the inhalation of globules of moisture by the dentist coming from the mouth of a patient being treated, the filing of a tooth being ground, and various other matters.
By reason of the mounting of the nozzle 15, it will be understood. that the same may be moved to various positions,'since the m I of which carries another elbow fitting 14:, i
ed, by reason ofthe suction created thererangement of the elbows 12 andll and the conduit extension 13 is such as to permit of compound movement as between the same. Thus, the nozzle maybe adjusted by the dentist, to various positions whereat it will; fectually serve for its purpose and yet, will not become troublesome to or hinder him in his Work upon a patient.
It is to be also understood that the improved device may be successfully used for removing soiled pieces of absorbent cotton and: like matteiyas removed from the mouth of a patient by the dentist, thus eliminating sorbent cotton in a waste receptacle to one side of the operating shaftr In order that the en'ergization of the 'motor- IO'may be conveniently controlled by auser of. the device, an electrical switch 16 may be and preferably is arranged upon one side Wall of the cabinet 1 and is connected to one side of the electrical circuit supplying energy to said'motor. Thus, by actuatin either stopped or started;
Maniife'stly, theconstruction shown is ca pable of. considerable modification and such I modification as is within the scope of my claims, I consider Withinthespirit ofmy invention.
Also, due to the the switclnl' the motor may be I claim: I 1. A device of the character described comprising a conduit adapted to have a suction created through one end of the same, an elbow fitting rotatably engaged with said end, of the conduit, an extension conduit rotatably engaging the free end of saidelbow fitting, a second elbow fitting rotatably engagingthe. free en'duof said conduit, and a nozzle secured to the free end of said second fitting 7 2. A device. of the c haracter'= described, comprising a" cabinet,- a vertical conduit within said cabinet adapted to have a: suction created through the upper end of the same, and a nozzle secured'to sa i-dupper end of the: conduit mounted for horizontal and -ve'r-- tical adjustment with relation to the same.
3.. A protective device of the character d e scribed com-prising aportabl e'" support, a conduit carried by said support and adapted to have a suction created throu glroneend thereof, an intake nozzle adjustab'ly mounted upon said end of the conduit and said nozzle being arranged about said support substantially as and in the manner specified.-
L A protectivedeviceiot the Cll'illttCtBI described comprising in combination a port's able cabinet, aconduitarranged with-in and extending through said cabinet, an extension communicating witharnd securedto-theup' per endoi said condmt', an hitake' nozzle ad justably connected to the upper end o 'f said extension, and flexible con-du-it'adapted to have a" suction ereated 'therein and- 'llQXllQ'lG conduit being in communication with the lower end oftlie cenduitarranged within saidcabinet. 1 Q
In witness whereof I have 'hereunt o' set my hand. i
