HCLAMPING Device roe nrracrrrue tier-Ls ro SHOES. Y
racemes.
Be it known that I, ERNEST N Unless, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Auburn, county of Androscoggin, and
State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices fo'r Attaching Heels to Shoes, of which the following is a full and complete specification. a
1n gluing high heels to womens shoes, it is a general practice to hold the wooden heel against the base of the shoe for a continued lengthnof time to allow the glue to. set.
Where this operation follows one in which a last is used in the shoe, and where the last is allowed to remain during the heel attaching operation it follows that the last is rendered useless for its primary purpose in the assembly of the shoes. Again, where large numbers of shoes have the heels applied simultaneously there is a consequent loss of time in the use of the lasts in the, specific operations in which a last is necessary.
It has been found that by removing the last from the shoeand substituting a special form of clamp to hold the heel duringthe gluing operation, improved results andadvantages are obtained! At the'same time the last is returned to further use in the assembly of the shoe proper.
f My invention consists in the provision of a heel attaching clamp which is used in place of the last and serves to materially aid in the proper gluing of the heel to the shoe in an improved and advantageous manner;
One form of my invention is described in the following specification and illustrated in the drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a new of the clamp in operation;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the clamp, showing certain parts in longitudinal section Fig. 3 is a detailed View of the strap carrying means, and
Fig. 4: is another form of strap adjustment.
I have shown a clamping base 4 fitting the heel of a womans shoe 5 indicated in Fig. 1 by dotted lines. This clamping base is drilled as at 6 to receive the upper end of a bench spindle 7 upon which it may be supported. The base extends from its rear-most tapered end 8 forward to the arch of the shoe as indicated at 9.

angle of {15 degrees with its top'and-bottom stenropposite the clamping base 4- is slotted as at 12. A pivot member 13 passes laterally through the stem and the slot 12. A bar 14 is carried upon the pivot member 13 and is free to move in a vertical plane. 'The upper endof the stem 11 isdrilled longie tudinally forthe greater portion of its V length'to provide ,a sleeve'15 which forms asmooth bearing fora rod 16 slidabletherein. The stem is slottedvertically aslindicated in Fig. 2 at17 and 18. vThis slot Centrally of, the clamp base and at an surfaces there is provided a hole lOcarrying a stem 11. This'stem 11 is generally rectan- 1 'gular in cross section. The upper face of the extend'sover a considerable distance for a purpose to be hereinafter setforth. I
Thebar 16 whichslides in the sleeve 15 carries near its lower end a lug 19 which tl'irough, the stem 16.. The outer end of thel'ug 19 is'transversely drilled. At, its upper end the stem 16 carries. a cross arm 21 to't'he extremities of which are pivoted sheet metal br other analogous links 22 by means of over-lapping ears 23'and pins 24, which latterare riveted tothe ears and pass through the cross member 21. I I
' An'L-shaped hand lever 24 isprovidedconlaterally disposed with respect tothe axis ofthe handle 25. This lever" is pivoted to the lug- 19 by ,a pin 27 passing throughthe].
bifurcated members and the lug. "The free ends of the bifurcated-membersare drilled transversely to car-rye rivet upon which one end of the bar 1 1 is pivoted. The bar 1 1 and the bifurcated members 26 are adapted to form a toggle when the bar approaches a position parallel to" the stem 11.
The members 22 have long narrow slots 28 in which are looped the ends of a flexible strap 29 made of canvas or similar material. One end of the strap 29 is firmly attached. as at 30. The opposite end 31 of the strap is held in adjustable position with respect to the running part of the strap by means of a fasteningconsisting of two plates 32. and 33. V The plate 32 has .an inturned lip 34;. Both plates are drilled to permit the passage of locking screws 35 which are fastened by -means of nuts 36.
It will be evident that this device is used after the plate): has been mounted upon the 75 is, attachedbyj means ofa pin 20 running r 8 5 sisting of a handle 25-and bifurcated ends 26 bench spindle 7. A shoe which is complete except for the heel and from which the last has been removed is then fitted upon the clamp plate 4 as indicated in Fig. 1. The wooden heel with the requisite glue is placed in final position upon-the upturned shoe. It will be apparent that during the above operation the strap 29 will have taken a position loosely around the shoe due to the fact that the handle is parallel to the stem 11 and that the rod 16 is therefore retracted.
The canvas strap will have been previously adjusted by means of the free end toggle.
forms a binding between the heel and the 31 being held in the locking plates 32 and 33, to give the requisite pressure desired. With the handle 25 in the retracted position the strap 29 is lifted over the broad base of the heel and allowed to conform to the latter. By pulling outward upon the handle 25 the leverage of the arms 26 and bar 14 forms a The strap is thus tightened and shoe. The shoe together with the clamp and the heel is then lifted from the spindle 7 and set aside until such time as the heel has become firmly attached in place. The
clamp is "then readily removed and the op- A series of holes has been provided in the face of the plate 4 to receive nails during use of the implement in repairingshoes.
It is to be noted that the action of the clamp is such as to draw the heel firmly vagainst'the rear edge of the outer sole and insure a close and neat joint therewith. In
' this manner the finished appearance of the completed shoe is rendered uniformly excellent and is entirely independentof the degree of care of the operator.
By the use of this clamp it is possible to keep the lasts in active and constant use without the former inconvenience of utilizing them as supporting mean-s during the heel attaching operation.
Other advantages will be evident from the above description and various changes can, of course, be made in material and construction without departing from the spirit of my invention, as defined in the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a clamp base, a re cessed stem thereon, a strap carrying member slidable in the recess of the stem and toggle means connecting the stem and the strap carrying member. 7 V
2. In combination, a clamp base, a recessed stem thereon, a strap carrying member slida-ble in the recess of the stem, a bar pivoted to'the stem, and a lever pivoted to the strap carrying member and connecting with the bar.
3. In combination, a clamp-base, a recessed stem thereon, a strap carrying member slidable in the recess of the stem, a bar pivoted in the stem, and a lever pivoted to the strap carrying member, said lever having one of its arms connected to said bar.
i. In combination, -a clamp base, a re cessed stem thereon, astrap carrying member having cross arms,a link connected to each cross arm and a flexible strap connecting said links, said strap carrying member slidable in the recess of the stem, and toggle means connecting the stem and the member.
5. In combination, a clamp base, a recessed stem thereon, amember slidable 1n the recess of the stem, toggle means: connecting the stem and the member, and an adjustable strap carried by said member.
In testimony whereof, I have. hereunto affixed my signature. 7
ERNEST N. CHASE.
