Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 21, 1921. Serial No. 453;9 1.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Hones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Supporting Backs, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to racks for supporting objects and, in its preferred embodiment, is of particular service when employed in supporting park plugs.
In accordance with one embodiment of the .invention the rack is in the form of a bracket having a shelf portion provided with a circular opening in the horizontal wall which is threaded around said opening.
In accordance with another e bodiment of the invention the shelf of the bracket has a hollow extention communicating with an opening in the shelf, this opening being preferably circular and the hollow extension being preferably tubular and threaded upon its interior. When the rack is employed to support spark plugs several of these threaded hollow extensions are provided into which the plugs are screwed,
'these hollow extensions being preferably sufiiciently long to surround the sparking electrodes to guard them from injury.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the rack made in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention and showing one spark plug supported thereby; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. I
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference in both figures.
The supporting rack illustrated is in the form of a bracket having an upright wall portion 1 and a substantially horizontal wall portion or shelf 2 which is formed with a number of circular openings. The rack is desirably made of iron and may be formed with downwardly extending tubular projections 3, the openings in the upper ends of these extensions being the.. desired circular openings in the shelf. When they supporting rack is designed to carry exteriorly threaded objects, such as spark plugs 4, the tubular extensions 3 are interiorly threaded to correspond with the exterior threading of such objects. When the rack is to support spark plugs the tubular extensions are desirably long enough to surround and extend below the sparking electrodes 5 of the spark plugs. If the tubular extensions are too long to be completely stamped out of the metal of theshelf 2 they may be partially stamped out of such metal and completed by sections welded or otherwise united to the stamped sections. The front end of the shelf may be provided with a front wall portion 6 that is-angular to and While the shelf 2 is preferably provided with a supporting wall 1 that is joined with the rear edge of the shelf I do not wish to be limited to such a relation, nor do I wish to be limited tothe downward extension of the tubular portions 3 and the designation bearing portion 6. The invention also is not to be limited to the length of the'tubular sections since one advantage thereof resides in increasing the threading area of the material at the holes in the shelf.
While I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be' made.
without departing from the spirit of my invention,- but having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:
A supporting rack including a bracket having a shelf portion formed with a circular opening in the shelf portion and carrying a tubular extension co-axial with said opening, this tubular extension being threaded upon its interior.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 15th day of March, A. D, 1921.-
JOHN W. HOBBS.
