citizen of the United tates, residing at San Die 0, in the county of San Diego and State of (Jalifornia, have invented a certaln new and useful Improvement in Hydrocarbon Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hydro-carbon burners, adapted for burning different kinds of oil and gas.
It is particularly Well adapted for burning crude oil.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel burner of the kind described, which 1s simple, cheap to make, durable, not liable to get out of order, and which is efficient in operation.

1 designates the hollow body of the burner, the body having a flaring discharge end, and having adjacent to its other end an inlet 2 for air and an inlet 3 for fuel, which may be conveyed into the burner by means of a pipe 4;, connected with asuitable source of supply, not shown. The inner end of the pipe 4 is upwardly turned and is provided with a discharge tip 5, which discharges through the longitudinal center of the body.
Mounted in the discharge end of the body 1 is a core, preferably hollow, comprising a cup-shaped member 6, having flaring outer walls encircled by and spaced apart from the inner flaring wall 7 of the discharge end of the body.
The cup-shaped member 6 is provided on its outer flaring wall with spaced apart substantially longitudinal spiral ribs 8, disposed at an angle to the axis of the body and engaging and supported by the inner flaring wall 7 of the body.
Mounted on the cup-shaped member 6 and closing the upper end thereof is provided a Specification of Letters Patent.

The intake end of the body is preferably downwardly flaring, as shown, so as to afford a stable support for the body, and so as to afford ample space for the admission of the air required for combustion of the fuel.
There may be revolubly mounted in the usual manner on the flaring lower end of the body 1, a flaring ring 10, which serves as a draft damper for covering or uncovering the air inlet openings 2 of the body 1.
In the operation of the burner, the fuel discharged from the tip 5 mixes with air in the body 1 and passes upwardly between the ribs 8 by which the mixture has imparted to it a whirling movement which aids greatly in the intermingling of the air with the fuel, so as to obtain a maximum of efliciency.
By employing a hollow core, much weight is dispensed with, and a consequent large absorption of heat by the core is avoided. By providing a cover for the cup shaped core member 6, an eddy in the mixture, which otherwise would be formed in the core is avoided, and water or residue can not collect in the cup shaped member.
For limiting the movement of the damper 10, it is provided with a horizontal slot 11 through which extends a screw 12 which is mounted in the body 1. If desired, the screw and slot may be dispensed with, in which case all the parts will be assembled in operative relationship without the use of screws. rivets or other accessory fastening devices.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is 1. In a burner of the kind described, a tubular body having a. flaring discharge end, and having adjacent to its other end an inlet for air and an inlet for fuel, and a core in said discharge end having flaring outer walls spaced apart from the inner flaring wall of the body and having spaced apart longitudinal ribs engaging the flaring inner wall of the body, the ribs being dis osed at an angle to the axis of the body, su stantially as set forth.
2. In a burner of the kind described, a tubular body having a flaring discharge end, and having adjacent to its other end an inlet for air and an inlet for fuel, and a hollow core in said discharge end having flaring outer walls spaced apart from the inner flaring wall of the body and having spaced apart longitudinal ribs engaging the flaring inner wall of the body, the ribs being disposed at an angle to the axis of the body, substantially as set forth.

In a burner of the kind described, a tubular body having a flaring discharge end, and having adjacent to its other end an inlet for air and an inlet for fuel, and a cupshaped core having flaring outer walls spaced apart from the inner flaring wall of the body and having spaced apart longitudinal ribs engaging the flaring inner wall of the body, the core having a cover, substantially as set I forth.
4. In a burner of the kind described, a tubular body having a flaring discharge end, and having adjacent to its other end an inlet for air and an inlet for fuel, and a hollow cup-shaped core having flaring outer walls spaced. apart from the inner flaring wall of the body and having spaced apart substantially longitudinal ribs disposed at an angle to the axisof the body and engaging the flaring inner wall of the body, the core having a cover, substantially as set forth.
5. In a burner of the kind described, a tubular body having a flaring discharge end having adjacent to its other end an inlet for air and an inlet for fuel, and a cup-shaped core having flaring outer walls spaced apart from the inner flaring walkof the body, and having spaced apart substantially longitudinal spiral ribs engaging the flaring inner wall of the body, substantially as set forth.
